  • PETA Update with Ingrid Newkirk

Courtney Garza of VEGWORLD joins us for the opening before our extended interview with Ingrid Newkirk, President of PETA. Garza and VEGWORLD have covered the work of PETA for years and are huge supporters. Check out the magazine and sign up for a FREE digital subscription at vegworldmag.com.
    PETA Update with Ingrid Newkirk
Ingrid Newkirk of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, joins us to talk about their work, racism and how we can make the world a better place. We are all opposed to oppression. It shouldn’t matter if it’s a human being or an animal. We are all part of creation. We all deserve compassion and respect.

People tell Ingrid “I’m just one person”. She says that’s enough. Write letters, share videos, call your government representatives and attend events. If you care about animals, Ingrid has a million things you can do to help them. Go to PETA.org for ways you can help. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Newkirk says if you don’t have time, don’t do anything. Meaning, don’t eat animals and don’t go to events exploiting and harming animals. The rodeo and parks like Seaworld, for example. If you don’t do anything that contributes to animal abuse, you're helping. Animal abuse carries over to racial abuse, gender bias and everything negative.

Listen to the show to hear why PETA is buying stock in some of the largest factory farming companies in the world and learn about their work to stop the Tiger King and others like him.

To learn more, pick up Ingrid’s latest book, AnimalKind.

Thank you to our listeners! We love you, we love animals and we love the planet! We are learning every day how to be kind to one another. Remember, you get one body, one mind and one life...let's all get out there today and make the most of it together!

  • Vegan “Meats”, Dr. Al’s Ancestral Nutrition Protocol

We are bringing our One Life Radio listeners two sides of the coin on today's show. We have Troy Gardner, head chef and owner of TLC Vegan Kitchen, talking about vegan "meats". And, Dr. Al Danenberg joins us with a health update and his ancestral nutrition protocol which he says helped him to beat terminal cancer.
Can Vegan Substitutes REALLY Taste Like Chicken?
Troy Gardner joins us from V-Eats restaurant and his newly created TLC Vegan Kitchen, a vegan delivery dining experience using a “ghost-kitchen”.  Gardner and his team spent years perfecting vegan "beef" dishes that taste like the real thing.  His vegan dog took over a year to create. Bernadette offers her tip for perfect vegan dog grilling, She recommends soaking vegan dogs in avocado oil before grilling.  They turn out perfectly.

Gardner says texture is the most important factor when cooking vegan “meats”. Portabello is an amazing meat substitute. But, the type of oil you use is just as important for a true meat taste. Olive or avocado oils work well. And, the pièce de résistance is an acid like citrus or vinegar. The marinade mixture is imperative for your vegan meat dish to taste like meat and not just a mushroom. Check out Troy's new concept at tlcvegankitchen.com
Ancestral Nutrition Protocol with Dr. Al Danenberg
We love hearing from Dr. Al Danenberg.  He recently received news that he is cancer free after battling incurable aggressive multiple myeloma for two years. He says his ancestral nutrition protocol was a contributor to his ability to beat cancer.

Dr. Danenberg says he had to avoid inflammatory foods because they support the growth of cancer cells. For anyone dealing with illness like cancer, it's important to remove these foods as well as chemicals from your diet. Inflammatory foods include grains, sugar products, safflower and other processed oils and legumes.

His ancestral nutrition protocol consists of mostly animal products right now. Fats and organs are the most important components of his diet. Currently, he eats two-to-one fat to protein. Bernadette asked about the quality of the meats he's consuming. He says every animal is pasture-raised and grass-fed. After starting his ancestral lifestyle and diet, he lost 30 pounds and eliminated all of his medications from a stroke he had years previously.

Bernadette and Dr. Danenberg both swear by our sponsor, Enviromedica’s Terraflora synbiotic as well as their bone and organ supplements. Check them out at enviromedica.com. You can also visit drdanenberg.com to learn more about Dr. Al's journey and follow his blog.

Everyone thank you for listening and have a great week!

  • New Pet, Now What?, Entrainment, Race Talks cont.
Hi everyone! Today's write-up is going to be a short one because it's FURRY FRIDAY and I'm ready to get the weekend started. Maura Davies of the SPCA of North Texas tells us what we need for our new furry adopted friend, Robin Perry Braun discusses the law of entrainment and Cody Myler continues his discussion on race in the country from his Thursday night live facebook talk.
    New Pet, Now What?
Maura says preparation is key. Here are some general rules thanks to the Humane Society of the United States:

Gather supplies. Prepare the things your dog will need in advance. ...
    Establish house rules. ...
    Plan the arrival. ...
    Prepare for housetraining. ...
Ensure all other pets are healthy. ...
    Let the games begin.

Don't forget to check out the spca.org website for their available pets. They are all hoping and wishing for their forever home, and it could be with you!
    Law of Entrainment
Next Robin Perry Braun explains the Law of Entrainment.  I'm going to be honest and say I didn't understand. So, thank you to Frontiersie.org for their thorough explanation: Entrainment is defined by a temporal locking process in which one system's motion or signal frequency entrains the frequency of another system. This process is a universal phenomenon that can be observed in physical (e.g., pendulum clocks) and biological systems (e.g., fire flies).

Musicians love entrainment because it’s all based on frequency. We can have negative or positive reactions from different frequencies.

Braun reminds us to always have intent when discussing any topic with another person. We should value each other and our opinions, even when they are different. Also, no one is a mind reader. We can’t ever assume that another person is feeling a certain way. Listen to other’s opinions and they should listen to yours.
The MF Fitness Podcast on race relations.
Cody Myler talks about his new podcast, The MF Fitness Podcast, designed for gym owners as a way to connect and share information.

Bernadette asks about his reaction to his facebook live interview last night with Jackie Robinson, Owner of Ra Roots Juices.  He said nothing was left off the table discussing the state of America amid nationwide protesting. He agrees that listening is key.

Our One Life Radio producer, Renaldo Davis, joined the conversation saying that we should all be about the human race. It’s human rights, not white or black rights. We should be outraged for any injustice to anyone at the hands of the police, no matter their race. Go Renaldo!

Check out Cody's website, www.mylerflex.com for more information on his podcast.
    Thank you

  • Listening, Device Overuse

Hello One Life Radio listeners! Our topics overlap in a weird way today. We first talk to Mo Brossette about listening to others. Dr. Lori Whatley joins us to talk about device overuse. What ever happened to talking face to face? Oh, yeah, COVID-19.
    The Spiritual Daily
We are so happy to have our in-house guru of love and peace, Navee Mendoza, to kick off the show with some words of wisdom. She is the founder of The Spiritual Daily, an online platform sharing daily messages of love and hope.  She says that we all have love to give. But, just like working out, we need a push-day every now and then. Think of today as your spiritual push-day. Get out there and exude love, acceptance and peace to everyone you meet. Whatever you give, you'll get back ten-fold.
    Perceptions, Understanding and Compassion
Mo Brossette, founder of LINK Endurance, talks with Bernadette about his Monday facebook live talk on Perceptions, Understanding and Compassion. We all agree that we can't begin to perceive what black american males go through in society. But, we all agree that we want to understand to the best of our ability. He tells a story about growing up in a small town and the discrimination he faced because of how he dressed and the friends he had. By no means does he compare his experience with that of black Americans, but it did affect him negatively. He says we all have experiences with discrimination in one form or another. We just need to listen to each other and get a conversation going. If you didn't hear Mo's live talk, visit his facebook page.
Are you Addicted to your Phone?
We are excited to talk to Dr. Lori Whatley about device overuse for her first appearance on One Life Radio. Dr. Whatley is an expert in dealing with issues brought on by excessive phone use. Spending too much time our devices can cause loss of productivity, sleeplessness, anxiety and more.

Here's a test to see if you have phone issues. Go to the grocery store without your phone. Be mindful how you feel. If you are stressed or anxious, you may suffer from device overuse.
Still not sure? We've got another test for you. Try not checking your phone for one full hour when you wake up. If you have anxiety, you may have an addiction to your device.

Dr. Whatley has a four-step process to help navigate device overuse. Check out her new book Connected & Engaged; How to Manage Digital Distractions and Reconnect with the World around You.

  • 90s Workouts, Animals and World Peace
It's Workout Wednesday! Tina Bernet Allen and our host Bernadette Fiaschetti are comparing 90s workouts to today's trends. Dr. Will Tuttle is back to teach us how world peace begins with animals.
    Let's Get Physical
Tina Bernet Allen and Bernadette talk about how the exercise routine has changed over the years. In the 80s it was all aerobics, now it's strength training. The workouts today include short duration, high-intensity weight training. Back in the day it was high duration, low-intensity. The amount we exercise has changed, too. Doctors recommended at least three days a week for at least 30 minutes. Now, plans are designed around the person, and are much more flexible.

Even diet trends have changed. Remember low fat, high carb diets? I actually had a friend whose hair fell out from not eating fat.  Now it’s the opposite with Keto, Paleo and plant-based lifestyles. The lesson is there’s no one-size-fits-all for workout plans or diets. Talk to an expert, listen to One Life Radio, talk to friends and do your research. You'll find the perfect plan to work for you. Click to learn more about Tina.
    World Peace Begins with Animals
Dr. Will Tuttle, author of the World Peace Diet, gives us his perspective on the recent protesting in the U.S. He says it’s necessary for individuals to be able to voice opinions for change, but violence is never the answer. Dr. Tuttle says hitting back at people who have been harmed never helps. Gandhi said “an eye for an eye makes the world blind.” We can hate someone's behavior, we don't have to hate the person.

He says the underlying cause of unrest is when human beings begin to look at other people and animals as objects rather than living beings. Dr. Tuttle believes this mindset is the result of our continuous mistreatment and torture of animals, mostly through factory farming.  We torture animals daily worldwide for our food consumption, entertainment, clothing, furniture, jewelry, knick-knacks and more. Until we believe that every living being deserves kindness and compassion and take action to end needless animal suffering, we will not end racism or war.
We know even the idea of changing your life-long food habits is daunting. But, one small change can impact the entire planet. Try a plant-based meal once a week. You'll feel better, help the environment, facilitate peace and save an animal's life all at once. Can you say that about a Big-Mac?

Try it! We'd love to hear what you make for your plant-based meal. Let us know, and we might share your story on the air! And, definitely get Dr. Tuttle's best-selling book, The World Peace Diet.

Check out Dr. Tuttle's first One Life Radio appearance discussing the World Peace Diet.

    Peace, Love and Thanks!

  • Racial Trauma, COVID vs. 1918 Influenza Pandemic
Today we're talking to DeWone Bennett about racial trauma. We chose the topic in light of the recent protests across the country over police violence towards black Americans. Dr. Steven Schwartz tells us about the Influenza pandemic of 1918.  We ask what we've learned about pandemics since 1918. Short answer - not much.
    Racial Trauma
Protests are going on across the nation in response to the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. We asked DeWone Bennett, a long-time guest of One Life Radio, to help us understand what's going on in the country.

Bennett explains that people are frustrated for a number of reasons. There have been hundreds of unnecessary deaths of black Americans at the hands of police officers. Frustration brought on by racial inequality has been building for a long time in this country.  Add the financial and health concerns brought on by COVID-19, people have become angry and are taking action to make change.

As a black American male, Bennett has experienced several instances of discrimination and racism in his lifetime. One instance he sites is being assaulted by police officers as a teen while at his summer job at an amusement park. Events like this have a lasting effect. They can lead to overall feelings of inadequacy and distrust towards the system meant to protect us. Bennett says instances like these lead to racial trauma.

Racial trauma is the cumulative effects of racism on an individual's mental and physical health. Racial trauma can't be fixed overnight, but can be addressed. Bennett says the purpose of counseling is to focus on perspective and what the person’s reality is. A therapist can help a person to change how they feel about themselves and thus build a sense of resilience to deal with and address  discrimination in the future.

Bernadette asks how we can all help to repair the damage caused by years of racial inequality. His recommendations are simple and profound:

    * Treat people how you want to be treated.
    * Empathize with people of all races.
    * Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
    * Place ourselves in situations with more diversity.

To talk to DeWone, or learn more about him, follow him on instagram @dewone.bennett_counseling or visit his website at prestonplacecounseling.com.
Did we learn anything from the Influenza pandemic of 1918?
Not really. Next we have Dr. Steven Schwartz discussing what we learned from the Influenza Pandemic of 1918 to help deal with COVID-19. Over 30 million people worldwide lost their lives from the influenza pandemic, compared to 20 million who died during WWI that was going on simultaneously with the pandemic.

The recommendations in 1918 were to wear masks and stay 6 feet apart. Sound familiar? Dr. Schwartz says we haven’t learned much about viruses and how they are spread since 1918. He believes transmission studies are key to learning how to properly respond to a potential pandemic threat. Air flow and ultraviolet light studies are also important. Vaccines are not the only answer. We have to look at ways viruses are spread before we’ll find the key to containing them.

If you enjoy this show, tune in next Tuesday when Dr. Schwartz discusses ways to prevent and treat allergies. You can also visit stshealth.com to learn more about him and his homeopathic preventive flu spray, FluNada.
    Thank you!

  • Peace and Love over Fear and Anxiety

Today is a show about togetherness, peace and love in the wake of nationwide protesting of the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. Our thoughts are with the family of Mr. Floyd, and to everyone protesting for a solution to end police brutality against black Americans.
    World Peace Begins Within
Autumn Connolly chants a mantra to start off the show. The general meaning of the chant is “anger builds nothing, and love builds everything.”

Connolly says that to make a difference, we need to start within. That means taking care of our mind, body and soul. We need to nourish ourselves to be at our best. If we are at peace with ourselves, we can carry that message to others.

Her message is "nourish the body, nourish the soul". She goes on to give us an amazing recipe that is good for us and affordable:

    * One bag of frozen peas, put in warm water until they’re bright green.
    * Do the same with a bunch of spinach
    * Add a handful of mint.
    * Then add 1/2 a cup of organic cashews.
    * Saute in a large pot until the vegetables are slightly wilted.
    * Move to your mixer and mix until you have a light puree.

That's it. Connolly says it's her favorite, and kids love it, too. We like to call it “Let there be PEAS on Earth!”

Don't forget to check out Autumn's product now available on amazon, Anvil Traditional Healing Kefir Starter Kit, which gives you everything you need to create your own probiotic drinks at home. It's the perfect replacement for store-bought sodas.
What to Say to Children about the Protests
Dr. Mike McFarland has been on the show numerous times. He is a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Texas, with a private practice in Dallas, TX. Dr. Mike specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCD), and male body image & eating disorders.

McFarland says the country is in a very confusing time right now. As COVID shelter-in-place starts to relax, we get hit with rioting and looting due to police violence.

When talking to our children about recent events, McFarland says to be up front. Try your best to decide the amount you share based on each child’s age and maturity level.

Bern asks if it’s possible to raise children without bias. McFarland says that we are all raised with biases through our family, society and our own experiences. We have to look at our own inner dialogue and keep ourselves in check. But, everyone has biases.

His advice is to get your children involved with groups that are designed to help society through peaceful measures. Of course, we want our children to have their own opinions and stand up for what they believe in, but not in a negative or violent way. We can hopefully steer them towards positive ways to protest, and learn something ourselves in the process. Learn more about Dr. Mike McFarland at www.mcfarlandpsychology.com.

Bernadette leaves us with the message that peace begins within. We all want peace on earth, and it’s possible if we look inward.   You get One Body, One Mind, and One Life....Get out there and make a difference - peacefully!

Thank you to our listeners, guests and sponsors. We love you all!

  • Furry Friday, Stuffing Our Feelings

It's Furry Friday! We've got our friend Maura Davies of the SPCA of North Texas tells us how to know when to take a pet to the vet. We also get home pet remedies and a beautiful chant from Autumn-Warren Connolly. And, Sam Morris, the Unbreakable Man, talks about the effects of stuffing our feelings.
When to Know Your Pet Needs a Vet
Maura Davies is a wealth of knowledge regarding pets, but even Davies questions if her pet needs to see a vet sometimes. She says we must get to know our dog or cat's behaviors to know when something is not quite right with them. If your pet throws up once or twice after eating, they probably have an upset stomach and will recover. If your pet stops eating or won't go to the bathroom for several days, definitely call your vet. If you do end up having to take your pet to the vet, know that they will probably want some alone time afterwards. Let them hide for a while. And, be sure to follow your vet's instructions. Listen to the full interview for a funny story from Maura about being too over-protective with your pet. And, visit spca.org for pet info., services and adoptions.
    Home Pet Remedies
Autumn Connolly keeps the Furry Friday party going with great ideas for home pet remedies. For natural flea prevention, her advice is to plan ahead. A few months before flea season make a powder of DE and Borax and spread around your house. This prevents flea eggs from hatching. Listen to the full interview for exactly how to do it. Since it's borax, you want to be careful around your pets and do it correctly. She also recommends making flea powder with B-12, brewer's yeast and garlic powder. You can make your own and mix this into your pet's food a few times per week. You'll want to listen to her remedy for ear infections, too.

We also learn about Autumn's product now available on amazon, Anvil Traditional Healing Kefir Starter Kit, which gives you everything you need to create your own probiotic drinks at home. We definitely will try it. Think of all the money we'll save not buying kombucha!
    Stuffing Our Feelings
The Unbreakable Man, Sam Morris, joins us with advice on releasing negative stuffed feelings. Morris compares stuffing our feelings to holding a beach ball underwater. We can try really hard to keep it under, but the ball eventually pops up in our face. It's the same with stuffing our feelings. When we are carrying around a lot of negative feelings and emotions from our past, they eventually show themselves in a number of ways; screaming at drivers on the road or store clerks at the grocery store, yelling at loved ones or getting angry with our pets. Morris says we aren't really angry with these people at that time, but we're upset with something we're holding on to from the past.

Once we become aware that we're stuffing feelings, we can begin to clear out the old baggage. His best advice for dealing with these negative feelings is to knock out the big ones first. The ones that keep us up at night, and wake us up in the morning. A therapist can be extremely helpful at this point. They see things about us that we may not recognize.

Once we let go of these negative feelings, growth happens. We've opened up all of that space that was holding all our negativity. Now there's room for new, positive feelings and experiences.

Morris says to always be working on ourselves, clearing out the negative energy. There's a whole new world out there once the negative elements have been released. Learn more about Sam Morris at themanunbreakable.
