  • #1268, Mercy For Animals, Jaime Lee Fraser and Money

    Happy Hump Day
Happy Hump Day from One Life Radio! Today we have great show. Erik Hastings from one of our favorite nonprofit groups, Mercy For Animals, stops by to discuss high speed chicken slaughterhouse lines. Jaime Lee Fraser is back to discuss money blocks and beliefs surrounding money and how to have money efficacy.
    Mercy For Animals
Erik Hastings used to be a hunter and avid meat consumer. Erik works for Mercy For Animals as an undercover investigator and worked his way up to Senior Investigations Specialist for U.S. operations. On Erik's latest investigation for Mercy For Animals, he exposed the atrocities happening in high-speed slaughterhouses via hidden cameras. The FDA allows 175 birds to be killed each minute, how disgusting! Also per the FDA, "free range" doesn't always mean "free range." Erik and Mercy For Animals are working towards having congress to not allow high-speed slaughter, especially amongst a pandemic.

Erik wants us to know that chickens are surprisingly smart and kind. Chickens play like cats and dogs in groups! Chickens can even play fetch!

For more information on Mercy For Animals fight to end high-speed slaughter of poultry, check out their website and consider donating to their cause!
    Jaime Lee Fraser
Our favorite money expert Jaime Lee Fraser is here to talk about maintaining a healthy relationship with money among a global pandemic. Jaime Lee and Bernadette discuss working hard and the emotional benefits that come with getting your hands dirty. Jaime Lee and Bernadette discuss the fundamental principals of managing your money and knowing how much you're actually spending on things like alcohol monthly. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, and his fast track to becoming the worlds first trillionaire is talked about. Is having that much wealth okay? Jaime Lee tells us about the difference in liquid cash and equity.

  • #1267 Shawn Wells and Antinutrients

We have Shawn Wells for the entire hour on One Life Radio today! He's talking about Antinutrients. Wells has written a guide to help, which I'm using in this post.

Here's an excerpt to help better understand antinutrients:

Plants are inherently healthy, right? Yes, and no. We just expect plants to be good for us, because that’s what we’re told, but the truth is that we have to be careful about what we eat, no matter what the source is. Some natural compounds are poisonous to us, like arsenic, and some (too many) natural foods are contaminated with one of the most detrimental ‘anti-nutrients’; round-up! The bottom-line is that while plants are healthy for us, some do contain natural compounds that are counterintuitive to our health. These compounds have been collectively called anti-nutrients. Just because plants are natural doesn’t mean they’re healthy. include Phytates, Oxylates and Gluten, and are a class of compounds found in plants to help them survive. In other words, defense mechanisms for the plant. You can prepare the plants you eat in certain ways to minimize the effects of anti-nutrients.

Wells says to just vary your diet, and you'll be fine. And, even Shawn says that even he has cheat day.

Visit his website for more information on antinutrients and lots more at www.shawnwells.com. You can download his guide to antinutrients here

  • #1264 Vaccines and Glyphosate
Today we're talking to two of the leaders in the fight for vaccine choice and overall human rights.  We decide what goes in our body, not the government. Jackie Schlegel of Texans for Vaccine Choice joins us along with  Zen Honeycutt of Moms Across America. Schlegel's concern is the vulnerability of some exemption laws, and Honeycutt warns us of the dangers of glyphosate in vaccines and foods.
    Texans for Vaccine Choice
Jackie and TFVC are putting out an action alert regarding the exemption laws for students. The language of the law pertaining to the exclusion of students with vaccine exemptions is vague. So, students with exemptions may be excluded during a time of declared emergency. For example, any exclusion of students with an exemption on file has included only those students with exemptions for a particular vaccine during an outbreak of a disease addressed by the exempted vaccine. So, if an outbreak of chickenpox occurs on a campus, only those students on that campus with exemptions for the chickenpox vaccine are asked to stay home.

Schlegel says TFVC is concerned that the legislative intent of the law could be ignored by schools taking advantage of the statute’s vagueness. They may use it to exclude students with exemptions for any vaccine because of the declared emergency, even though a vaccine relevant to the Covid-19 emergency does not yet exist. Weeks ago, in anticipation of this potential threat, TFVC asked Rep. James White to submit an official Attorney General Opinion Request to ask the questions about the legality of this scenario.
    Moms Across America and Glyphosate
Zen Honeycutt of Moms Across America is concerned about glyphosate in vaccines and foods. Recent law revisions are allowing food companies to change their ingredients without listing the changes on the labels. This could lead to problems with allergic reactions due to mislabeling. Glyphosate is found in many foods and some vaccines today. It has been linked to liver disease, birth defects, reproductive problems. It may also kill beneficial gut bacteria and damage the DNA in human embryonic, placental and umbilical cord cells. We as Americans need to stand up for our rights to healthy foods and medicines, including vaccines.

Please help both of these groups and stand up to corruption from Big Pharma and Big Food. Visit momsacrossamerica.org to view a video on glyphosate and texansforvaccinechoice.com and join the fight to keep vaccines a choice and not a mandate.

  • #1263 Brain & Body Workouts, Positive Coaching Alliance
Tina Bernet Allen and Bernadette discuss the importance of moving and keeping active. And, Kip Watson updates us on the work of the Positive Coaching Alliance.
Importance of Working your Brain and your Body
Tina Bernet Allen is one of the top fitness trainers in Dallas. She tailors each workout to the specific needs of her clients. Bernet-Allen says that as we age, it’s important to do exercises that also include brain function. For instance, do exercises that have several movements needing coordination and balance. She says to vary your program and challenge yourself. These types of movements work more muscle groups at once and burn more calories.
    Positive Coaching Alliance
Kip Watson is here to give us an update on the great work of the Positive Coaching Alliance, a non-profit group helping student athletes to reach their full potential on and off the field. Students today are facing unprecedented challenges as they return to school amid the COVID-19 outbreak and nationwide protesting.

The PCA hosts over 3,500 workshops per year, helping athletes perform at their best by teaching the life skills students need to succeed. This is important now more than ever. Some states have started allowing student practices as states reopen after COVID. Coaches are considering safety measures such as regular temperature checks, separating lockers and social distance to protect students. Watson expressed concern, saying there’s no way to enforce social distancing with contact sports.

In regard to the nationwide protesting over racial discrimination, Watson says how race issues are addressed is going to be specific to each school.   PCA is currently speaking with top sports authorities as well as government leaders to determine what programs will work best to help coaches and students address racial discrimination within their athletic departments. Learn more about Kip on her website, braincodecorp.com.

We love having Kip and Tina on the show. Click to hear one of  Kip's previous episodes, or here for a past interview with Tina.

  • #1262 Beneficial Sun Exposure, Mental Health and First Responders

We've got two important and timely topics today. Jared Ramirez of Enviromedica discusses the benefits of sun exposure. And, we continue our series on race with Dewone Bennett. Today we're talking about mental health and first responders. We learn what mental health services are available to first responders. Bennett also talks about the training needed to effectively deal with situations involving a mentally impaired person.
    Benefits of Sun Exposure
Jared Ramirez is the CEO of Enviromedica, a One Life Radio sponsor. He is an expert in the science of ancestral health. Ramirez says studies show over and over that sun exposure is good for us and vital to our overall well being. The sun actually helps to protect against illness and is critical to all of our body systems. Listen to the full interview to learn why sun exposure is so good for us and about the negative impact of some sunscreens.
    Mental Health and First Responders
Dewone Bennett continues our series on race and bias in America with a discussion on the mental health services available to first responders. Public safety workers experience a broad range of mental health issues brought on by their jobs. They are exposed to death, grief, injury, pain, and loss. They also deal with threats to their personal safety, long hours, poor sleep, physical hardships, and other negative experiences. These experiences can lead to depression, PTSD, anxiety and other mental disorders. Bennett says there are programs in place to help officers deal with their concerns. But, the stigma of mental health issues has an impact on how many workers take advantage of the services.

Bennett is in favor of adding extra mental health services and for funding social work and mental health groups to support police officers in certain situations.

Bernadette and Dewone also discuss the need to legalize marijuana and commute the sentences of all non violent offenders arrested of marijuana possession.

We have more to talk about with Dewone, so tune in on Tuesday, June 30th, as we continue discussing systemic racial inequality and how we can change for the better. And, check out his zoom chat with several of his friends and colleagues as they discuss their personal experiences with racism.
    Thank you

  • #1260, Best Friends, Mental Health, and Belief Systems

We are joined today by three superstar guests, Marc Peralta of Best Friends, Bonnie Cook, and Robin Perry Braun! It has been a full week, but we all got through it! Happy Friday from One Life Radio!

    Best Friends Animal Society
Marc Peralta opens the show with Bernadette on a roll! Marc gives us the bad news of the status of Best Friends Animal Society, but then changes the day with some incredible good news as well. The bad news is that a few of Best Friend’s staff members have to stay quarantined and away from the animals, but when a door gets closed, somewhere a window is opened. COVID-19 has thrown the whole planet for a loop, but there have been some positive changes too! We are all a little lonely in quarantine, but with the help of a furry friend, we can give a shelter animal a foster home, and get cuddles at the same time! Best Friends Animal Society has always been known for changing the status quo, and Best Friends is extremely adaptable to change to help the animals and indeed try to ‘“Save Them All.”

    Mental Health and Substance Abuse
Next, Bonnie Cook is the CEO & President of Mental Health America of Greater Dallas. She is here to tell us mental health has gone from bad to worse, but there is hope. Bonnie Cook faces many obstacles when treating those with substance abuse disorders and mental illness, the biggest being helping people recognize they have a problem. In order to help those struggling with substance abuse, several different factors that need to be understood to heal. Bonnie states that to reduce stigma, it is imperative to treat our brains like we treat every other part of our bodies.

    Belief Systems
Finally, Robin Perry Braun has a Master’s Degree in psychology and can offer much insight on people’s belief systems. Beliefs can lie in our DNA, or even be rooted in our brains from childhood traumas! Traumatic events are archived in our memories and can even be passed down to our offspring. We know from studies that inherited trauma from our ancestors can also negatively affect our beliefs. Very interesting!

    Thank you
Thank you to all of our guests today! If you would like to help “Save Them All” along with Marc Peralta and Bernadette, consider donating a few dollars every month to “Best Friends!”

Next, Dr. Jonathan Avery joins us to discuss his work regarding substance abuse bias. Dr. Avery researches why and how to combat physician bias towards substance abusers. Dr. Avery and Bernadette compare the biases between doctors and substance abusers to race and gender biases.
