  • Recycling, Do Dogs See in Color, Dr. Al’s Cancer Update #1166

In today's episode we talk with Maura Davies about whether or not dog's can see in color. Then we talk with Dr. Alvin Danenberg about his current cancer treatment, and Stephanie Toups talks about recycling and how we might be recycling incorrectly.
    Do Dog's See in Color?
That's the million dollar question. Maura Davies is the VP of Communications at the SPCA of Texas, and today she answers it for us. It's pretty shocking the quality of sight that dogs have, especially at night. And not just dogs, cat's are practically made to be night owls with their impressive night vision. But, whether or not these animals see in color - you'll just have to listen and find out! Davies also reminds us to spay and neuter our pets.  Call your local SPCA for more info.
    Dr. Al's Cancer Treatment (Update)
Dr. Alvin Danenberg is a periodontist with over 40 years of experience. He has been joining us for a few years now, but most recently to talk about his own battle with cancer. Dr. Al was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a form of cancer in the bone marrow. He was given 3-6 months to live, back in September of 2018. Dr. Al is using alternative treatment methods like diet, immunotherapy, supplementing, and more. Today he gives us an update on his new diet plan - the Carnivore diet. It may seem strange, but he is seeing great results from his immunotherapy along with this eating regimen. To follow along with his treatment and read about the science of this diet, you can read his blog here.
11 Things You Really Should Stop Recycling
Recycling can be sort of a complex process. For beginners, it's hard to know what can and cannot be recycled. And some people simply don't take the time to research or ask the questions. This can really disrupt the recycling process, and in the end do more harm than good. Stephanie Toups is a consumer advocate professional, who primarily focuses on beauty and personal care products. She has done her share of research and reading to learn the in's and out's of proper recycling skills.

There is a lot that goes into how we recycle. The items have to meet a standard to be recycled, and some pieces or attachments cannot be recycled. For instance, a pizza box. Yes, cardboard boxes are recyclable however, once drenched in pizza grease that item cannot go through a recycling warehouse. If it does, it can ruin many other items and the equipment. This makes for such a frustrating and costly process. Stephanie goes into more detail, and tells which 11 items we should stop recycling, immediately!

  • Von Eaglin on The Different Types of Empathy #1165

Today we talk with our in-house therapist, Von Eaglin, about the different types of empathy. Von Eaglin is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor and works with two group practices in the Dallas area.
The Different Types of Empathy with Von

    em·pa·thy

    /ˈempəTHē/

    noun

    *

the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Empathy is a huge part of our emotional intelligence. From the time we are around 2 years old, Von tells us that we are aware that we have different emotions than those around us. The 'terrible two's' are a time when children are discovering their emotions and how to express them. It can be difficult for a parent to comfort a child during this time because it is extremely frustrating. But, children learn from their environment. The way that parents respond to their emotions will teach them the basics for understanding and controlling them.

The three different types of empathy are: cognitive, emotional, and compassionate. Von breaks down each type of empathy and how each of them affect our day-to-day lives. We also talk about those individuals in this world who seem to lack empathy - where does this stem from, and what type of person are they? We talk about how empathy plays a role into narcissism and those who may suffer from a mental disorder. Relating to others emotions is absolutely necessary when building relationships, and it starts at a young age. This means, teaching children this step in their development is crucial.

Mo Brossette - Who are YOU?
The question "who are you" can intimidate a lot of people. It seems we tend to identify others on things like: their job/occupation, their age, if they are single/married, if they have children, etc., and we never really get to know others for the unique things about them. Mo challenges us today to start asking the questions like:

    * What do you do for fun?
    * Do you have any passions or dreams?
    * What makes you, you?

This may seem awkward, but you will definitely find yourself having deeper conversations with people and actually share things in common. We have to stop putting our identity in our titles and find our true-selves through the things that bring us joy and purpose. So, who are you?

Mo Brossette is an expert on human behavior, mindset, movement, and nutrition. He is a Keynote Speaker on Fear and Human Potential, where he teaches companies and individuals how to achieve professional and personal goals, overcome limiting beliefs, and use fear as your greatest tool for success.

We as pet owners, have to stick with what we choose with our pets because they don't understand why it's OK sometimes and not at other times.

Stop Self-Sabotage by Dr. Judy Ho
Dr. Judy Ho, Ph.D., joins us today to talk about her new book. So many of us struggle with self-sabotage, we know what we need to do to live our best lives, but simply don't do it. We like to create excuses for things like: not eating clean, not exercising, not sleeping enough, not drinking enough water, and so on. We all make time for what is important to us, no matter what that means. And most of us put our physical, mental, and emotional health on the back burner which creates more distraction from reaching our goals. Dr. Judy's book is all about pushing through those excuses, making detailed goals, and ultimately reaching your highest potential.

    * Dr. Judy is a Licensed and triple board certified Clinical and Forensic and Neuropsychologist. She has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and extensive experience working with clients of all ages, facing a variety of challenges and issues. Jill breaks down what each diet ACTUALLY consists of, and how they can work. Remember, no diet is a one-size-fits-all. Sometimes, the diet that works for a lot of people won't work for you, and that's not because you're doing it incorrectly. It just doesn't work for your body. Learning your body and what makes it work optimally is a time consuming process, but is so worth it. Listen in to what Jill thinks about today's top diets, and how to navigate through choosing a diet that's best for you.

    Ingrid Newkirk - Animalkind
Ingrid Newkirk is a true pioneer in the animal rights movement. She is the president and founder of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the largest animal rights organization in the world. We talk with Ingrid about the successes that PETA achieved in the last year, which includes New York City Council Bans the Sale of Foie Gras, and Dunkin’ Is Going National With Beyond Sausage. Animals deserve to have a chance at life just like any other living being. Because, at the end of the day humans are just animals too, right?

    About The Book:
"In the last few decades, a wealth of new information has emerged about who animals are—intelligent, aware, and empathetic. Studies show that animals are astounding beings with intelligence, emotions, intricate communications networks, and myriad abilities. In Animalkind, Ingrid Newkirk and Gene Stone present these findings in a concise and awe-inspiring way, detailing a range of surprising discoveries: that geese fall in love and stay with a partner for life, that fish “sing” underwater, and that elephants use their trunks to send subsonic signals, alerting other herds to danger miles away."
Here is a past episode we did with Ingrid.
