  • Get Fit After Summer, Energy Hygiene Pt. 2 #1075

Today we have Dr. Debra Greene with us discussing energy hygiene, and Tina Bernet talks about how to get fit after summer break.
    Get Fit After Summer Break
Tina Bernet is recognized as one of the top female personal trainers in Dallas/Fort Worth area. She is also a dear friend of the OLR team, and Bernadette's personal trainer. We are so happy to talk with her about this topic today: how to get fit after summer break. Getting ready for summer is usually when most people kick it into high gear because they know that swimsuit season is coming. But what about when summer is over? A fitness routine after summer is huge because, a lot of times we get way too comfortable underneath layers of clothing. Also, school is back in session and the holidays are coming so it's extra important to set in a routine and stick to it.

This doesn't mean that straying from your routine is a bad thing, life happens. You have to be flexible for anything to throw your routine off. Tina gives us some tips and advice on what a good routine looks like and how to stick with it.
    How's your Energy Hygiene?
Dr. Debra Greene joined us a few weeks ago to cover this topic, and today we go a little deeper. Energy is everywhere and in everything. There is essentially no way to not be affected by the energy around you. Getting rid of some of the energy "clutter" around you can be so beneficial to your energy health. We don't realize sometimes the mass amount of unseen energy coming from our cell phones and devices, wifi, and electricity. Dr. Debra is an expert in this field and she talks with us about energy hygiene and how you can tell what shape yours might be in.

  • Hope & Healing with Cannabis, Foods for Brain Health #1074

Today we talk with Donna Sage about hope and healing with cannabis and with Jill Lane about 7 foods for brain health.
    Hope and Healing with Cannabis
Donna Sage, M.S.S.A., is a mother, wife, and health educator who lives in Denver, Colorado. Donna also writes for the Well Being Journal. Her story involves her daughter who at the age of 14 suffered from two concussions. This resulted in a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and chronic, debilitating headaches. They spent years undergoing various treatment plans, 3 of them were:

    * REAP (resting, education, accommodations, pace). Six months of this method produced only minimal improvement in Ashley’s condition, and left her still suffering from incapacitating headaches.
    * Prescription drugs. These proved expensive, toxic, and completely ineffective.
    * Cannabidiol. CBD, which is derived from marijuana, proved to be non-toxic, and it relieved Ashley’s incapacitating headache within 30 minutes. We eventually began supplementing the CBD with THC (which is the psychoactive agent in marijuana) to obtain more comprehensive relief of our daughter’s concussion symptoms.

So, today Donna tells us their story. She tells us the struggles her family went through and where they are now. Her daughter experienced healing with cannabis along with so many others in the world. She even joined cannabis social networks online to communicate with these people who she could relate so well to.
Cannabis is widely praised for its healing capabilities. Thanks to increased awareness of the health-boosting properties of cannabis, there are more and more ways to enjoy products infused with marijuana than ever before. For example, cannabutter - butter infused with cannabis - can be used as the staple ingredient in various dishes and bakes. Above all, learning how to make cannabutter could help you to find alternative ways to enjoy the potential benefits of cannabis. As well, we cover what the current legalities are when it comes to cannabis, and what the future looks like because it's easier than ever to get hold of the medicinal drug, with online retailers of the product becoming more common. With the legalization of it for medicinal purposes in states like California, many companies have taken to selling it online. It's easier than ever to do that, with companies like this providing cannabis consulting california to sellers, so that they are able to run quality businesses with a quality product.
    7 Foods for Brain Health
Along with the topic on cannabis and the brain, we talk with Jill Lane about what foods are great for brain health. Jill Lane is a pro-athlete health and nutrition coach and Founder of Fueling Champions. She is extremely knowledgeable on foods and supplements for optimal health and performance. Today she touches on what foods are extremely damaging to the brain like: alcohol, sugar, processed foods, artificial sweeteners, etc., and we cover which foods are amazing for the brain. If you want to hear Jill's top 7, don't miss this episode.

  • Approaching and Maintaining Goals & Future of Psychedelics #1071

Today Mo Brossette talks about how to approach and maintain your goals, and Dr. Dan Engle talks about the future of medicine with psychedelics.
How to Properly Approach and Maintain Goals
Mo Brossette is the current director of mindset and nutrition at the Adaptive Training Foundation. He is an amazing speaker and influencer on taking control of your life and reaching goals that you didn't think were possible. Today he talks with us specifically about how to approach and maintain your goals. Have you ever set a New Year's resolution? Did you finish, or give up? We all have done it and are guilty of not following through. Goals are the same concept, whether they be short-term or long-term. The act of writing down specific goals for yourself (career, diet, exercise, meditation, etc.) is so helpful to look at and track your progress.

The key to maintaining a goal is to approach that goal properly. This means the first thing you should do is set a date in which that goal needs to be complete. Then, you track your progress in reaching that goal. If you realize you have gone off track, don't beat yourself up. Just try and remember why you set that goal and follow through. We can accomplish so much more than we tell ourselves, so set high goals! Mo tells us some good tips and advice to make sure we are optimizing our potential and ultimately reaching our goals to the end.
The Future of Medicine with Psychedelics
We have been doing a series with Dr. Dan Engle about psychedelics. Dr. Dan Engle is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology and he is extremely knowledgeable on this subject. Today we talk about the future of medicine with the incorporation of psychedelics; specifically Psilocybin and MDMA. Both are being used for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, and seeing great results for even "treatment resistant" conditions. This is such a huge feat for the pharmacology industry as it is tremendously helping those who felt they had no relief from any type of medication or therapy. Dr. Dan explains where we are in the legalization of these two drugs for psychotherapy, as well as what the future impact will be.

  • Preventing Chronic Illness, Video Games and Violence #1070

Today we have Dr. Nasha Winters with us talking about how to prevent chronic illness and DeWone Bennett talking about video games and violence.
    Prevention of Chronic Illness
Dr. Nasha Winters is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor and is the co-author of the book "The Metabolic Approach to Cancer." She is such a delight to talk with about this subject because, not only is she extremely knowledgeable, she actually has had her own battle with cancer. So this episode is not a doctor telling you how to live just because she studied it in the textbooks, Dr. Nasha is living proof that what she is talking about, works. Chronic illness, cancer, disease, auto-immune disorders, etc., are all (most often) products of our lifestyle and how we take care of our bodies.

When you are dealing with chronic illness, you may not know where to begin or you might simply feel defeated. Dr. Nasha talks about how the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle can contribute to long-term health and healing. The term "Whole-Body" healing is what Dr. Nasha goes by, and it looks at our bodies terrain which includes elements like: epigenetics, the microbiome, the immune system, toxin exposures, and blood sugar balance. Then you can effectively determine what kind of diet and lifestyle is going to be optimal for you. Here is an episode we did with Dr. Nasha on cannabis and cancer.
    Video Games and Violence
Every parent has the fear of violence exposure leading to a more violent child. Video games that allow kids to basically hold a gun in their hands and take the lives of other players is desensitizing them to the violence. We also see every day on our phones a new shooting, sexual assault, or violent act being done all around the world. Violence is everywhere. So, what is the science behind the video game theory? Is there really negative consequences of too much exposure? DeWone Bennett is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and he talks with us about this and what he thinks the best things that parents can do for their children.

    Man's Best Friend
Maura Davies is the VP of communications for the SPCA of Texas. Today she talks about the history of man's best friend, AKA the dog. The loyalty and respect between a man and his dog is amazing, and we talk about the real story behind the term "man's best friend." We also talk with her about animal welfare practices like spaying and neutering and checking the pavement before walking your dog.
    Breaking Free From Food-Obsessed Thoughts
Cassie Bjork joins us to talk about breaking free from food-obsessed thoughts. We can be so hard on ourselves to eat right, that sometimes just THINKING about food takes over every aspect of our day. Having a slice of cake or some french fries every now and again is 100% OK...as long as you make that choice and feel good about it. Feeling guilty and remorseful about the food you eat is not healthy.

Cassie also talks about how to respond to remarks from your family about your eating habits. This is such a great topic because a lot of times if your lifestyle choices don't line up with someone else's, you catch some hate for it. If you are trying out a new diet and your family just doesn't understand it, listen to Cassie's tips on how to deal with it and respond respectfully.

    * Cassie Bjork is a globally recognized industry leader in weight loss and a highly sought-after speaker and the #1 International Best Selling Author of Why Am I Still Fat? The Hidden Keys to Unlocking That Stubborn Weight Loss.

    Keys to Longevity
Shawn Wells and Faraz Khan join us today to talk all about longevity. We all want the secrets that will help us live a long, healthy, and beautiful life. But, we have a lot going against us. Things like technology and the new 5G network...this is making us humans do everything at a faster speed with no time for rest. The prevalence of fast food and poor food quality is doing nothing but make us sick. There is an extreme lack of exercise and a huge deficiency in vitamin D, because we are staying cooped up inside all day. These are just a few things that Shawn and Faraz go over with us today. They also give us their advice on supplementation, sleep, bio-hacking for anti-aging, and a whole lot more!

    * Shawn Wells is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Sports Nutritionist, Fellow in the ISSN, and has his Masters of Public Health in Nutritional Biochemistry.
    * Faraz Khan is a Los Angeles based podcast host, anti-aging enthusiast and influencer.

  • Deep Roots of Materialism & The Future of Cheating #1067

Today we talk with Kip Watson and DeWone Bennett about two very innate and human-like behaviors: materialism and cheating.
    The Deep Roots of Materialism
DeWone Bennett talks about a topic that most humans deal with on a day-to-day basis, and that is materialism. In a culture filled with social media and comparison, it is hard to feel measured up with the status quo when it is constantly changing. Why do we feel the need to have the newest and latest thing on the market? Is it that we are striving for some sort of value through the things that we have? Here is the definition of materialism:

    ma·te·ri·al·ism

    *

a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values.

We tend to make idols out of our belongings, the way we look and are perceived, and even our relationships. DeWone talks with us today in depth about where materialism stems from and why it is a never-ending cycle.

    The Future of Cheating
You may be thinking, "The Future of Cheating," why is that even a title? Well, Cosmopolitan Magazine thought it was a good topic and Kip Watson and Bernadette love a little Cosmo talk. We live in a culture where people and relationships are treated just like our material things. Meaning, we throw them away when we are ready for something newer and more exciting. Today we talk about sexting, hiding things from your significant other, pornography, and much more. Cheating comes in so many forms and can be hidden so easily. Furthermore, in the digital age we are in there are so many more ways to meet people than ever before.

    * Kip Watson is a licensed Professional Counselor & Supervisor and Sports Psychology Professional.

  • Headaches and Migraines & Reframing Self-Talk #1066

Today we talk with Dr. Cristina Wohlgehagen about headaches and migraines 101, and we talk with Mo Brossette about how to reframe your self-talk.
    Headaches and Migraines 101
Today we talk with an expert in the field of neurology and headache medicine about the basics of headaches and migraines. She answers some questions like: What is the difference in a headache and migraine? What causes them? How common are they? And most importantly, how do we treat them? Most people who suffer from migraines don't get relief from common over-the-counter pain killers, and are completely debilitated from the pain and sensitivity. Dr. Cris talks about some of the things that could trigger a migraine or headache. We also talk about whether or not diet and environmental factors play a role in the prevalence of headaches and migraines.

Dr. Cris is board certified in Neurology and Headache Medicine, and Founder of the International Headache Center.

    Reframing Self-Talk
Mo Brossette joins us today to talk about how we can change our self-talk to live a more meaningful and purposeful life. There are certain words in our daily vocabulary that subconsciously might be holding you back. Self-talk is so powerful, it can ultimately change the trajectory of your day by one thought or word. The conversations you have with yourself most often turn into your truth, so why would you talk negatively to yourself only for it to come true? Beating yourself up and thinking the worst could happen at any given time, will never get you to your highest potential. Here is another episode we did on self-talk with Mo.

    * Mo Brossette is the Director of Mindset and Nutrition at The Adaptive Training Foundation.
