  • Dr. Will Cole: Inflammation & Mo Brossette: Facing Fear #1095

    Today Dr. Will Cole joins us to talk about inflammation, specifically his new book "The Inflammation Spectrum," and Mo Brossette talks about facing fear.
    Dr. Will Cole: "The Inflammation Spectrum"
    Dr. Will Cole is a leading functional-medicine expert. He is the author of the book, "Ketotarian" and his new book, "The Inflammation Spectrum." Inflammation can wreak havoc on the body. There is a reason for inflammation, and then there is chronic inflammation. The body responds with inflammation because it is trying to fight off something or get rid of toxins. And, it can be a result of stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, depression, etc. Knowing where your inflammation is stemming from can help you to treat it correctly.

    Dr. Will Cole's new book includes information on food triggers, quizzes, and advice. The food we put into our body directly correlates on how our body feels and performs. When you eat something extremely processed, high in carbohydrates and high in sugar, you normally don't feel in tip-top shape afterward. This is because your body is so busy trying to process it and get rid of all of the junk. Hence - the inflammation. Getting moving and nourishing your body with real food is the start to reducing your inflammation and feeling your best.

    Here are some other shows we have done with Dr. Cole:

    * #1042 - Blood Sugar
    * #949 - Eco-Keto

    Facing Fear
    Morris “Mo” Brossette has been in the health and fitness industry for over 24 years, and is an expert on human behavior, mindset, movement, and nutrition. Today we talk about one of his personal favorite topics - fear. What is fear?

    Fear (n.) an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

    If you notice there is a key word in that definition - belief. Fear starts with a belief that something is bad, or going to be bad. Therefore, it is completely a mental thing. Mo talks today about how we have to change our mindset of fear to help us face it. Facing fears is so liberating, and it challenges personal growth to the max. We should really be facing fears daily, can you think of all that you could accomplish?

  • Why You are Craving Carbs, Common Migraine Food Triggers #1094

    Today we talk with Jill Lane about Carbs - the good, the bad, and why you might be craving them. Then, we talk with Dr. Cristina Wohlgehagen about common migraine food triggers.
    Craving Carbs?
    Carbohydrates are such a gift, right? French fries, pizza, potato chips, pasta....all the goods. Some days it's like you simply can't get enough carbs. And, some days may not be that way at all. So what is the appropriate amount of carbs, and which should you choose? Jill Lane is an expert in the fields of nutrition and exercise physiology, and she dives in on this complex subject today.

    There are good and bad sources of carbs. In this article, it breaks down everything you will need to know about carbs, and why you might be craving them. This doesn't mean, don't enjoy French fries and pizza now and again, just don't go to those as your regular intake for carbs. Find complex carbs that will keep you fuller, longer. And that have good sources of fiber, and low amounts of added sodium. In the world we live in now with so many options for processed foods, pre-packaged foods, and fast-food, the key is to eat foods in their closest to natural state. This means, unaltered, unprocessed, chemical-free, additive-free, etc., and you will be on the right path.
    Migraine Food Triggers
    Dr. Cristina Wohlgehagen is a family and community-oriented neurologist taking a holistic
    approach to health care. She also founded the International Headache Center. She joined us a few weeks ago on this podcast episode, talking about the basics of headaches and migraines. Today we dive deeper and talk about common food triggers. If you suffer from migraines, you may have no idea that something in your diet could be triggering your episodes. Here are some common food triggers:

    * Alcohol (especially red wine and beer)
    * Aged cheese
    * Cured meats
    * Overly ripe bananas or avocados
    * Food preservatives that contain nitrates and nitrites (deli meats)
    * Smoked fish
    * Yeast extract
    * Pickled foods
    * Artificial sweeteners (aspartame)
    * Monosodium Glutamate (MSG or "flavor enhancer")
    * Food Dyes
    * Chocolate
    * Onions
    * Citrus fruit
    * Peanuts
    * Dairy

    It's quite a lengthy list, but if you do suffer with migraines, finding out if it's one or a combination of these could definitely help you find relief. Listen to hear Dr. Cris give even more common triggers aside from food, in this episode.

  • V Capaldi: The Narrative & Debbie Campbell: Cerebellum and Mental Health #1093

    Today we have Diane V Capaldi joining us to talk about biohacking and minimalism and Debbie Campbell talks about the cerebellum and mental health.
    The Narrative with V Capaldi
    If you did not hear our first show we did with V Capaldi, listen here. There is a sweet surprise featuring her dog, Gidget, and it just so happened it was national dog day...could it be a coincidence? V is known as the PaleoBOSS Lady, and is a well-known TEDx speaker, influencer, and Boss Lady. She dedicates her life to helping others, and that is something we could all do a little more of.

    Today we talk about "The Narrative." This is more than just one thing, and V answers so many questions. We talk about biohacking with minimalism, greed, health and wellness, the BAM Van, and much more. V's story is absolutely compelling. Being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 24, then taking her health into her own hands and now living a life "100% completely in charge and driven by passion." V Capaldi healed herself of secondary progressive MS using diet and lifestyle alone. This woman is a boss! Don't miss this episode.
    Cerebellum and Mental Health
    Debbie Campbell is a licensed marriage and family therapist and has a background in applied sport psychology and positive psychology. Today we talk about the cerebellum. The cerebellum is a small portion of the brain, but contains roughly half of the brains neurons. It coordinates balance, posture, coordination, speech, and learning motor behaviors. So, it serves a huge purpose in your overall brain function.

    Debbie talks with us today about how your mental health and the cerebellum are connected. We go into the science of concussions, brain development as babies and children, and current research being done on the brain today. The effects of a traumatic brain injury can be lifelong, so knowing the state of your brain and mental health is so important.

  • PETA Update, Defy Aging with Yoga, Dirty Dozen Food Additives #1092

    Today we do an update with PETA and talk about their #endspeciesismcampaign. Then we talk with Darshan Goswami about defying aging with yoga, and Stephanie Toups talks about the dirty dozen guide to food additives.
    Dirty Dozen Guide to Food Additives
    Over 10,000 additives are allowed in our food today. Knowing what is in the food you are eating can be difficult with the mass amount of processed foods and the ingredient list that you cannot even begin to understand. It's as if we need to take a class just on understanding nutrition labels. Stephanie Toups joins us today to talk about the Environmental Working Group's Dirty Dozen Guide to Food Additives. This list shows the top additives that are a risk for concern and what foods they are in so you can do your best to avoid them.

    Here’s EWG’s Dirty Dozen list:

    * Nitrites and nitrates
    * Potassium bromate
    * Propyl paraben
    * Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)
    * Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)
    * Propyl gallate
    * Theobromine
    * Secret flavor ingredients
    * Artificial colors
    * Diacetyl
    * Phosphate-based food additives
    * Aluminum-based additives

    In short, highly processed foods are the main reason we have all of these additives in our foods. The health concerns associated with them can range from endocrine disruptors to cancer. As a result, we have to make our health and the generations that come after us, our top priority.

    Stephanie Toups is a consumer advocate professional particularly focused on safety in food and personal care products.
    PETA Update & #EndEpeciesismCampaign
    Today we get an update from PETA with their senior campaign coordinator, Melanie Johnson. She tells us about their new campaign to "End Speciesism." Below is a video of Kat Graham joining with PETA to expose and #endspeciesism.

    * “Speciesism” is the human-held belief that all other animal species are inferior. This supremacist line of “reasoning” is used to defend treating other living, feeling beings as property, objects, or even ingredients. It’s a bias rooted in denying others their own agency, interests, and self-worth, often for personal gain.

    If you click this link, you can sign the pledge against speciesism and overall animal cruelty.
    Defying Aging with Yoga
    Darshan Goswami is a spiritual yoga and meditation teacher. He joins us today to talk about an article her wrote about how to defy aging with yoga. You may think of yoga as a way of exercise, but the benefits go so much deeper than just your physical being. Yoga is mind, body, and soul when done correctly and with good intent. Darshan gives us these 5 principals of yoga:

    * Relaxation: Rest your entire body and release tension in the muscle (yoga exercise and relaxation can restore body's normal energy flow and calm the mind).
    * Exercise: Performed regularly, the yoga postures (known as asanas) help to stretch and tone all the body muscles and strengthen bones, improve circulation, and help to relieve depression by increasing endorphins in the body.
    * Breath Control (known as pranayama): Proper breathing technique increases the capacity of the lungs enabling you to breathe more. It can help to strengthen the internal organs, improve mental clarity and control, and deepen your ability to relax.
    * Well-balanced Diet: A well-balanced diet will boost the immune system, ensure better health, and calm the mind.

  • Men and Sex, Role Modeling Relationships for Your Kids #1091

    Today we talk with Von Eaglin about men and sex...this is interesting and entertaining so don't miss this one. We also talk with Kip Watson about how to role model good relationships for your kids.
    Men and Sex
    "Your body is a wonderland" - John Mayer

    Men and sex, this is a broad topic...and a juicy one. Today Von Eaglin joins us to talk about some of the thoughts, attitudes, and relationships that men have with sex. Men can view sex differently based on their experience as a child - whether or not they were exposed to sex at an early age. This could be either through physical sexual content or early exposure to pornography. Then we go into how pornography can wire mens brains to only want that type of sexual experience they get from pornography.

    Von talks about why men can view women as sexual objects, and want power and control in sexual relationships. Sex in relationships varies, and some men don't realize that what worked in one relationship may not work at all in the next. Getting to know a woman slowly and understanding what she wants and desires sexually is the only way to have a mutual and sexually satisfying relationship.

    Von Eaglin is a licensed professional counselor and a certified couple relationships trainer.
    How to Role Model Good Relationships for Your Kids
    The way we learn what a relationship looks like is usually by our parents. Nowadays, the divorce rate is so high that it may be a parent and a step-parent relationship. Kip starts the conversation about 6 common tendencies in relationships that people THINK are healthy and normal, but actually can present bad role models for our kids. Showing our children a healthy, respectful, and loving relationship will set the foundation for how they perceive and attract relationships in the future. We only scratch the surface of this conversation, but will continue it next time Kip joins us again.

    Kip Watson is a licensed professional counselor and supervisor and a sports psychology professional.

  • How Addicts Avoid Sobriety & Implementing Daily Movement #1090

    Today we talk with Sam Morris about common stories or reasons that addicts use to avoid real sobriety. Mo Brossette talks about implementing daily movement as a stress reducer and focus enhancer.
    Stories Addicts Use to Avoid Sobriety
    Sam Morris was once an addict, and now is using his experience with recovery as well as his professional experience to help others. Today we talk about some of the stories and reasons that addicts use to avoid or block real sobriety. Living a life of real sobriety for an addict can be intimidating, unwanted, and overall difficult. That's why you may hear these kinds of stories from addicts:

    * When I get a new job, new girl, more money; then i'll get sober
    * I'm not an alcoholic, I just like to party
    * I can stop whenever I want, I just don't want to.
    * I'll never be able to have any fun again if I totally stop drinking
    * I'll never be able to meet a girl/guy if I don't drink
    * My family/friends are just drinkers
    * Life without alcohol is scary

    We talk about what the truths are behind each of these. We also talk about the steps to recognizing you have an addiction and getting help to get through it.

    Sam Morris is the founder of Telos Lifestyle Coaching. He specializes in coaching people through the early stages of recovery from addiction. He is also a Certified Mindset Coach, a Certified Mindfulness Practitioner, a Certified Personal Trainer and a Certified Nutritionist.
    Implementing Daily Movement as a Stress Reducer and Focus Enhancer
    Getting through the work day being motivated and productive is a daunting task. Things come at you like distractions, tiredness, boredom, and day dreaming, which can all take you away from getting the job done. There is actual evidence to show that you can only be focused and productive for 50 minutes maximum working on a single task. So, most people most likely spend their days not being as productive as they could be.

    But, there is a solution. Mo Brossette talks with us today about how incorporating movement into your day can up your focus and decrease your stress. Mo says that taking a walk a few times throughout your day, with no phone and no distractions can increase blood flow to the brain, which in turn produces more creativity and focus. This is so important for so many people all over the world who work at a desk for 8 hours a day. Get up from your desk, turn on a good song, and go for a walk! The quality of your work and your mental health will thank you!

    Mo Brossette is the director of nutrition and mindset at the Adaptive Training Foundation.

  • The Gendered Brain & Raising Emotional Intelligence #1089

    Today we talk with Gina Rippon about her book, The Gendered Brain. And we talk with DeWone Bennett about raising emotional intelligence.
    The Gendered Brain
    Gina Rippon is a researcher in the field of cognitive neuroscience at the Aston Brain Centre at Aston University, Birmingham. Gina is also a part of the European Union Gender Equality Network. Today we talk about her book, "The Gendered Brain: The New Neuroscience that Shatters the Myth of the Female Brain." For years, scientists believed that men and women's brains were vastly different, which created this inferiority between women and men. Now, the science and dialogue is changing. Science is showing that there is hardly much difference between men and women's brains.

    Gina's book covers some of the stigmas of the "female brain" as well as how our environment plays such a significant role in how we are wired. Babies are taught from the beginning what their gender role is. This means, certain toys, colors, and behaviors are only appropriate for either boys or girls. So really, the way we identify our gender roles comes more from nurture rather than nature. The Gendered Brain shows just how alike men and women are, but environmental factors and social norms have simply come between.
    Raising Emotional Intelligence
    DeWone Bennett is a licensed professional counselor and counseling supervisor with more than 10 years of experience. DeWone joins us to talk about how important it is to build emotional intelligence. A lot of times we can harp on the importance of book smarts and IQ. But, emotional intelligence is showing to be just as important, if not more. The ability to sympathize, relate, and acknowledge others emotions and act off of them requires practice and teaching.

    Children start to learn at an early age that if their parent has had a bad day or is in a bad mood, it's probably not the best time to ask for something. This is emotional intelligence. This expands into their schooling, their love lives, and their career. If you are in a leadership position, it is extra important to know how to connect and appreciate your employees. Your emotional intelligence goes beyond controlling your own emotions, it goes into handling others as well.

  • Dr. Al’s Cancer Treatment, Optimal Gut Health, Diet & Depression #1088

    Today we talk with Dr. Alvin Danenberg about his cancer treatment and remarkable recovery. We also talk with Aglaée Jacob about optimal gut health with real food, and Faye Elahi about the link between diet and depression.
    Dr. Al's Cancer Treatment & Remarkable Recovery
    Dr. Alvin Danenberg has been updating us with his progress on treating his Multiple Myeloma. He was diagnosed last September and was told he had 3-6 months to live. But Dr. Al decided to take his health into his own hands and create an alternative treatment plan. Dr. Al's oncologist was very skeptical and not on board...at first. Then, he started to see some results that were not what he expected.

    Today Dr. Al joins us to talk about his recovery since a bad setback. He was bedridden for quite some time, had multiple fractures, and was in terrible pain. His hope and motivation with his own treatment plan was fading. He talks with us today about the state of depression he was in and how he miraculously came out of it. Today, he is back on his treatment plan and regaining his strength and desire to live. You can read his blog here.
    Optimal Gut Health with Real Food
    Aglaée Jacob is a non-diet dietitian, a heart and soul nutritionist, a self-love guide, and the author of the book and cookbook, Digestive Health with REAL Food. Aglaée has her own story in that she struggled with physical issues, mental health challenges and almost 2 decades of binge eating disorder. This is how Radicata Nutrition came to be.

    Her passion is to educate others on how to get back in touch with your body as well as your soul. The foods we eat definitely do interact with our physical health and our mental/emotional health. That is why gut health is at the forefront. Probiotics and supplements are great, but they also go off of the foods that are present and the current state of your gut. If you are consuming a lot of processed foods, high amounts of sugar, alcohol and caffeine (in excess,) and all the things we know are not great, then those supplements and probiotics will only benefit you so much.

    We talk about how REAL food can impact the health of your gut and in turn, impact your overall well-being. Aglaée's book can be found here.
    Link Between Diet and Depression
    Faye Elahi is a psychologist and nutritionist, she specializes in food allergies, food intolerances, Celiac, Gluten Sensitivity, ADD, ADHD, & Autism Spectrum Disorders. She is a also a Public Speaker, blogger, researcher and is the author of Ready, Set, Eat. Today we backpack off of our conversation with Aglaée and talk about the link between diet and depression. Faye is such an expert in this topic because she is both a psychologist and nutritionist and has seen the connection first hand. She answers all the questions today, and will be back soon for more!

  • Breathing and Mindfulness, Exercise and Muscle Soreness #1087

    Today we have Maura Davies talking about why pets eat gross things. Mo Brossette talks about daily breathing and mindfulness practice and Dr. Jakob Vingren talks about exercise and muscle soreness.
    Why Does My Dog Eat Gross Things?
    Maura Davies is the VP of Communications for the SPCA of Texas. Today we talk about something that every pet owner deals with. You come home and find that your dog or cat has gotten into something they shouldn't have. You panic because you have no idea how much they ate and what this will do to their stomachs. Maura gives us all the tips on pet proofing your home, as well as the logic behind why pets get into weird and sometimes gross stuff.
    Daily Breathing and Mindfulness Practice
    Mo Brossette is the director of nutrition and mindfulness at the Adaptive Training Foundation. He works with a variety of different clients, including wounded veterans. He also does coaching and speaking engagements on topics like mindfulness, reaching your goals, dealing with fear, etc.

    Today we talk with Mo about how to practice mindfulness along with breathing exercises. Mindfulness is quite simple and does not require a lot of time, but it does require practice. A lot of times people interchange mindfulness and meditation, though they are different. Practicing mindfulness can be whatever you want it to be. It could be in the morning when you wake up you say a prayer, or you go sit outside and have your coffee; but whatever it is, you have to be present in that moment and not think about anything else. Also, your breathing goes hand-in-hand with mindfulness. Practicing breathing techniques can help you get in the headspace you need to be 100% mindful for that time being.
    Exercise and Muscle Soreness
    Dr. Jakob Vingren is a Professor of Exercise Physiology and Nutrition at the University of North Texas. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Today we talk with him about exercise and muscle soreness.

    We have all experienced our muscles being sore and tight after a good workout. But, why? What is going on in our muscles to make them ache? Dr. Jakob tells us if muscle soreness is a good thing, also how to know if you might have overdone it in the gym. The build up of lactic acid is what happens when you work your muscles. And then the inflammation sets in. We talk about some great supplements for inflammation, one specifically is from Thorne called Meriva. It is amazing for inflammation because it is made from Curcumin.

    Dr. Jakob talks more about some of the ways athletes rehabilitate their bodies like for instance, ice baths.  The main takeaway from today's show is learning why your muscles get sore, and what the best ways are to recover.

  • Insecurities will Destroy Your Relationship, Family Dysfunction #1086

    Today we talk with Von Eaglin and DeWone Bennett about how your own insecurities will destroy your relationship and family dysfunction.
    Von Eaglin and DeWone Bennett are both experienced licensed professional counselors in the Dallas area. They both work with couples and relationships and are experts on the topic of insecurities destroying relationships. We all have insecurities due to things like our upbringing, past relationships, and exposure to other relationships. This will infiltrate any relationship you enter into and can be destructive. Some examples of insecurities in relationships are:

    * Fear of infidelity
    * Feeling like you're not enough
    * Jealousy
    * Appearance
    * Trust issues
    * Comparison

    We are all human and have our faults, which is OK. Embrace them, learn from them, grow from them.

    Family dysfunction is most definitely not a rarity in our society. We all have a little bit of family dysfunction, some more than others. So know that you are not alone if you feel your family is kind of messy. Today we talk about what defines a dysfunctional family, and how to cope with it.
