  • Drew Manning: Losing Weight & Von Eaglin: Believing Apologies #1105

Today we talk with Drew Manning about the toughest part of losing weight, and with Von Eaglin about how to know when to believe an apology.
Drew Manning - Toughest Part About Losing Weight
Drew Manning is a leader in the fitness and health industry. He's also the author of the New York Times best-selling book, Fit2Fat2Fit: The Unexpected Lessons from Gaining and Losing 75 lbs on Purpose, and has for years been a leading voice in the burgeoning Keto Diet movement. Coming from someone who gained and lost 75 pounds on purpose, we know that Drew knows a lot about weight loss.

Some of us lose weight easily, some not so much. Some gain weight super easily, and some not so much. Our bodies are not made equally, and there is so much going on inside our bodies that we have to do a lot of self-evaluation to know what's going to work and what's not. Today Drew talks about what the toughest parts are when losing weight. Is it the exercise, the diet, or the overall lifestyle change? He answers all of these questions, and more.
"I'm sorry..." but are you really?
Apologies can be difficult to understand. They can be passive aggressive, or straight out fake. Von Eaglin is a licensed professional counselor and today he joins us to talk about this. Everyone deals with getting and giving apologies. It's just the nature of life. We make mistakes, hurt others feelings, do people wrong, and the reverse happens to us. Learning to apologize is a huge piece of life and relationships.

Whether it's between you and a friend, a colleague, a family member, or a spouse, you must learn to accept and give out apologies. But how can you tell when an apology is legit? Von tells us exactly this today. Some people simply will apologize just to put an end to the argument/disagreement, and this is not healthy. What do you do when someone gives you a petty apology? Listen in to hear all about it.

  • How Alcohol Affects Weight Loss, Weight Training, and More #1104

Today we talk with Tina Bernet about how alcohol affects weight loss, weight lifting, and overall fitness and health.
    How Alcohol Affects Weight Loss/Gain
Tina Bernet is one of the top female trainers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. She has been in the fitness industry for over 25 years, so she knows quite a bit about this topic. Today we cover a few things. We talk about how alcohol affects weight loss/gain, weight lifting, and overall body composition. And we cover some of the basics of working out. Alcohol affects every person differently. However, Tina tells us that not all alcohol is equal. There are drastic differences in the physiological impact from either wine, beer, or liquor. Tina talks with us today about which alcohol you should stray away from and which are OK. She also talks about how much alcohol you can get away with without jeopardizing your progress.
    Exercise Do's and Don'ts
Then we talk about the immune system and how it can be compromised by over training. That is why it is so important to understand your body and listen to it during and after whatever training you choose. Also, never over do it while sick or while recovering from and illness. The stress from your work out can extend the length of recovery from that illness much longer than necessary.

Tina and Bernadette converse today all about exercise, whether your are younger or older, a man or a woman, it will apply to you. We all need to be active and take care of our bodies, not just for the physical reasons. Your health is your wealth, so take care of it! • Incurable Cancer Treatment, Walking & Sprinting, Keto for Cancer #1103

Today we talk with Dr. Alvin Danenberg about his cancer healing journey. Dr Ian Smith joins us to talk about the benefits of walking and sprinting. Miriam Kalamian and Shawn Wells talk about using keto for cancer.
    Incurable Cancer: A Healing Journey
Dr. Alvin Danenberg has an aggressive form of bone marrow cancer and is currently on a healing journey. He has been joining us to give us updates on his health status and his treatment plan. Dr. Al's cancer makes his bones weak and prone to fractures. Most recently, he fell and was bed ridden for quite some time. But he pulled through and is currently walking successfully with a walker! Yay, Dr. Al!

His treatment plan has been unconventional, and successful. He has not done chemotherapy, and solely using alternative treatment options. Dr. Al talks with us today about how he is implementing Immunotherapy starting this week (this is a new treatment that was just recently approved.) He was given 3 months to live in September of 2018, so he has surpassed his prognosis and is looking forward to his journey going forward.
Walking & Sprinting with Dr. Ian Smith
Dr. Ian Smith is the author of the best-selling SHRED diet books, and his newest book "Clean & Lean." He is currently the medical contributor and co-host of the nationally syndicated television show The Rachael Ray Show. He joins us today to talk about the benefits of walking and sprinting. We go into interval training, resistance training, and all the ways you can start an exercise routine just by walking.
    Keto for Cancer
Miriam Kalamian is a nutrition consultant, educator, and author specializing in the implementation of ketogenic therapies. Her book, "Keto for Cancer" documents how the ketogenic diet targets cancer. Today she joins us to talk about how you can modify the ketogenic diet for certain cancers, age, or lifestyle.

Shawn Wells is a registered dietitian, certified sports nutritionist, and fellow through the ISSN. He is an expert in the ketogenic diet as well, so he elaborates on some of the new information being published and modifying the keto diet for cancer. One of the main concerns with cancer patients is losing lean body mass, so Miriam and Shawn talk about what you should do to make sure your diet is helping you maintain lean body mass.

Then Miriam and Shawn talk about the science of using keto for cancer, and how it works to shut it down. There has been huge success with keto for brain cancer patients, and oncologists have been implementing it in their treatment. So the future for the ketogenic diet for cancer treatment is bright.

  • Autumn Pet Tips, Exercise Induced Soreness, Science of Breathing #1102

Today Maura Davies joins us to talk about health tips for pets during Autumn and Fall. Dr. Jakob Vingren joins us to talk about exercise induced soreness, part II. And Shawn Wells talks about the science of breathing.
    Autumn Health Tips for Pets
There is so much change during Autumn and Fall seasons, and much of it could be a danger to pets. First, the colder weather blows in. Then, there is all the food that comes with the fall holidays. These changes make pets susceptible to eating something they shouldn't, or getting loose and getting hurt. We, as pet owners, have to be mindful and extra careful during these months to protect our pets. Maura Davies is the VP of communications at the SPCA of Texas, and she gives us the tips on how to handle this.
    Exercise Induced Soreness Part II
Dr. Jakob Vingren is a Professor of Exercise Physiology and Nutrition at the University of North Texas. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Today we continue our talk with him about exercise induced muscle soreness.

We have all experienced our muscles being sore and tight after a good workout. But, why? What is going on in our muscles to make them ache? Dr. Jakob tells us if muscle soreness is a good thing, also how to know if you might have overdone it in the gym. The build up of lactic acid is what happens when you work your muscles. And then the inflammation sets in. We talk about some great supplements for inflammation, one specifically is from Thorne called Meriva. It is amazing for inflammation because it is made from Curcumin.

Dr. Jakob talks more about some of the ways athletes rehabilitate their bodies like for instance, ice baths.  The main takeaway from today’s show is learning why your muscles get sore, and what the best ways are to recover.
    The Science of Breathing
Shawn Wells is a registered dietitian and a certified sports nutritionist. Today we go over a little bit of the science of breathing. Breathing through your nose and breathing through your mouth can have very different results. Shawn tells us which type of breathing is best for stress relief, blood pressure, and overall better oxidation. Then we talk about belly breathing and perfecting your breathing with practice. We will continue this topic when Shawn comes back.

  • Role Model Relationships for Your Kids, Scary Movies Cause Anxiety #1101

Today we talk with Kip Watson about how to role model the best relationship for your kids. DeWone Bennett talks about how scary movies can cause anxiety.
Role Model the BEST Relationship for your Kids, Part II
Kip Watson is a licensed professional counselor and supervisor and a sports psychology professional. She has nearly 20 years of experience and is a mother herself. Kip talks with us today about how children learn from the relationships they observe. This means, the good and the bad. We are not perfect people, therefore we will not be perfect parents. However, our children watch what we do and usually will imitate that into their own lives. Relationships, whether they be romantic or not, are huge for children to learn what is acceptable and appropriate.

Kip talks with us about how to make sure our children are understanding what an ideal relationship is, so that they can have good relationships in their future. We have also spoken with DeWone Bennett about fighting in front of your kids, you can listen to that here. Children need good role models, so why not be one for them? Part I of this series with Kip Watson can be found here.
    Scary Movies Cause Anxiety
Have you ever watched a scary movie and then not been able to go to sleep because you feel afraid or paranoid? And once you finally get past it and fall asleep...you have a nightmare. This is the aftermath for a lot of people after they watch a scary movie. DeWone Bennett is a licensed professional counselor with over 10 years of experience. Today we talk about how scary movies can cause anxiety.

The one thing that is so disturbing about scary movies today, is a lot of them have realistic situations. Things in these movies can cause anxiety for days to follow because there is a likelihood of them actually happening. Other movies that contain things like creatures or scary clowns, may just evoke that anxiety feeling while watching but at the end of the day you know it's just fiction. Either way, the anxiety you feel during and after a scary movie can be very traumatizing. We talk all about the psychology of this with DeWone today.

  • Choosing the Best Probiotics & Supersets, Single Sets, and Circuits #1100

What to Look for When Choosing a Probiotic
Probiotics come in all different shapes and sizes. Things like Kombucha, Kefir, fermented foods, capsules, and so on. The supplement industry has blown up with probiotics and it is hard to know the quality and efficacy of what is out there. Jared Ramirez is the CEO of Enviromedica. He joins us today to talk about the check list that you must go through when considering a probiotic. There is so much that goes into the making of a probiotic to ensure quality and potency. And Enviromedica's Terraflora crosses all the T's and dots all the I's.

Terraflora is different because it is a broad spectrum synbiotic, which means it contains spore form probiotics and food-based prebiotics. Terraflora is designed to reach it's target destination (the lower GI tract) which is unlike a lot of probiotics on the market that are dissolved once they reach the stomach. It also requires no refrigeration, making it easy to take with you so you never forget it. Bernadette is extremely thorough when researching and choosing the products she uses every day, and Enviromedica's product Terraflora, is amazing.
Supersets, Single Sets, and Circuits with Tina Bernet
Tina Bernet is a top female trainer in the DFW area. Today she joins us to talk about her guide to supersets, single sets, and circuits. When you are on a fitness journey, it is so important to switch it up and try different things. Tina talks about the difference between supersets, single sets and circuits, along with what they are good for. One is good for fat loss, one is good for building strength, and one is good for conditioning.

Our muscles have a memory, and when your workout regimen is the same every day you will eventually stop seeing results. Keeping your muscles "confused" by switching up your workout routine every couple of weeks will help you with continuous results. Tina is the best of the best in the industry, so listen in to hear her when she joins us on Wednesday's!

  • Plant-Based Meat Alternatives, Social Media Vs. Reality #1099

Today we talk with Sadrah Schadel about plant-based meat alternatives and with Courtney Garza about social media vs. reality.
    Plant-Based Meat Alternatives
People are starting to open their eyes to a plant-based diet. This does not mean vegan, this just means making the majority of your diet come from plants. We could all use more fruits and vegetables, anyways. Sadrah Schadel is the co-founder at No Evil Foods. She was seeking an alternative to laboratory created vegetarian mystery meats and the harsh realities of factory farming. They make small batch plant meats from scratch and by hand, updating a centuries old tradition to create powerful and innovative plant-based proteins. And they do it all with organic & non-GMO ingredients.

Today we talk with her about why a plant-based diet is getting more popular, and what it's benefits include. She also talks about her story creating No Evil Foods, and the passion behind it. Then she gives us some great recipes, which you can get right here.
    Social Media vs. Reality
Courtney Garza is a leader in the vegan community. She is the Editor in Chief for VEGWORLD Magazine, co-founder of Sprinkles Creative, and a social media influencer. She talks with us about how social media can skew our perception of someones reality. By just looking at someones social media, we see a perfect life. Pictures are staged, filtered, and all around not their reality. Courtney talks about how it is her normal to eat cold food, because of the time it takes to get the perfect picture. She also talks about her insta-boyfriend, who knows it's his job to get all the right angles. This just simply isn't real life at all.

Social media has created unattainable life goals. Little girls and boys are looking up to icons and "influencers" and aspiring to be like them, when their social media probably shows a small fraction of their reality. This is setting our culture up for failure. The realness of reality is no longer acceptable. But not for Courtney. She has decided to ditch the filters, and just be her. She aspires to be an influencer with something to influence that's actually attainable. Listen in to hear all about this!

  • Tips to Calm Your Energy & Situational Awareness #1098

Today we talk with Dr. Debra Greene about her tips to calm your energy. Guy Mezger also joins us to talk about situational awareness.
    Tips to Calm Your Energy

Today she joins us to talk about easy ways to calm your energy, from anywhere. She walks us through a couple of small meditation practices that will immediately slow your heart rate and get your energy level calm. If you are ever in a high-stress environment and need quick and immediate relief, these practices definitely help. I think we all could use some calm, so be sure to hear this one.

    Situational Awareness with Guy Mezger
If anyone is the right person to talk about situational awareness and self-defense, it is Guy Mezger.

Guy Mezger has been in the martial arts field and the fields of health, fitness and physical performance, for over 30 years. He is a certified Holistic Health Practitioner and has his PhD in holistic health. Guy was a professional combat athlete winning 5 world titles in 4 separate full contact sports. He is most recognized for his accomplishments in Mixed Martial Arts winning both the UFC and King of Pancrase titles.

Today he talks with us about how to be situationally aware, and not overly distracted to the point of being targeted. Women and men are at risk for being targeted, but women are usually the majority. Things like being on your phone, not watching what's going on around you, and not knowing how to defend yourself are all things that make you vulnerable. Guy talks about how to be aware with your children as well. We live in a world today where really no one is safe at all times. Sex trafficking is happening everywhere, it can happen in the blink of an eye. There is no better time to learn how to be safe, situationally aware, and learn some self-defense.

Here are some past episodes with Guy Mezger:

    * Self-Defense #830
    * Death by High Fructose Corn Syrup & CBD #779

  • Fungus & Health, InFLUenced by Big Pharma #1097

Today we talk with Doug Kaufmann about his book, "The Fungus Link to Women's Health Problems," and with Shawn Wells about the flu shot.
The Fungus Link to Women's Health Problems
Doug Kaufmann is the host of the popular TV show, Know The Cause. He became interested in the subject of fungus as it pertains to disease while working in the area of food allergies. His research on fungus has opened his eyes to the many health problems that can be traced back to fungus. Today we talk with Doug about his book, "The Fungus Link to Women's Health Problems." This book covers everything from autoimmune disorders to cancer.

I think we are all tired of visiting a doctors office with a problem and being handed a pill. Something we will have to take to forever treat the symptoms that are causing us problems. Instead of finding out where the root of these symptoms are coming from, they are masked with a prescription. That does nobody any good...except for pharmaceutical sales, of course. Doug is here to inform us that it may be a common fungi causing your problems. Women, and men, listen up!
    InFLUenced by Big Pharma
Shawn Wells joins us to talk about the ever so controversial, flu shot. Shawn Wells is a registered dietitian and a certified sports nutritionist. He is not a doctor and is not giving medical advice in this episode. We are simply talking about the facts and the science that is skewed and persuaded by pharmaceutical companies. The flu shot may be right for some people, but all people? No. There is not a one-size-fits-all when it comes to vaccines. Any of them, for that matter. And that is what most of the medical community does not put out to the people.

Shawn Wells talks about how vaccines, like the flu shot, can negatively interfere with our immune systems. He also talks about why you should start with things like proper hand-washing, enough good quality sleep, and good nutrition. This is the BEST way to keep your immune system strong and not have to face the risks associated with any vaccine.
