  • Relationship Advice from 2 Shrinks: Debbie Campbell & Von Eaglin #1115

Today we get some relationship advice from Debbie Campbell and Von Eaglin. Both are licensed counselors who work with couples and relationships.
5 of the Scariest Habits in a Relationship
Debbie Campbell is a licensed marriage and family therapist, and the co-founder of Curis Functional Health. Who better to get relationship advice from than a shrink? Today we talk about the scariest habits of a relationship. This includes things like: never apologizing, not sharing true emotions/feelings, lack of intimacy, and more. There are so many habits that may be rooted deeply in a person from either their childhood or past relationships. These can easily tear a relationship apart. Debbie talks with us about how you can identify these in a relationship and how you can work to correct it.
How Expectations are Shaping Your Relationship
Von Eaglin is a licensed professional counselor and a certified couple relationships trainer. His relationship advice for us today is about expectations. When you are single looking for the "perfect" mate, you normally have some sort of checklist or ideas of what characteristics that person will have. This is absolutely OK and normal to do. You do not need to lower expectations while looking for a partner. It is the expectations you have while in a relationship that could be shaping your relationship in a not-so-good way. When you expect that your partner is going to do certain things or behave in certain ways and they don't, it can create resentment.

Relationships are a constant process of learning about each other, even when you're 10 years in. Things come into relationships like: family, marriage, children, financial setbacks, etc., that will challenge you and your partner. You start to realize that your expectations might not be getting met. And, there is a time and place to address these with your partner. Von goes into detail about all of this today.

  • Carbs & Healing After a Loss #1113

Today we talk with Jill Lane about carbohydrates, and DeWone Bennett about healing and rediscovering yourself after losing a loved one.
    Carbs with Jill Lane
Jill Lane continues her conversation today about carbs. We discussed a few weeks ago with Jill about why you might be craving carbs. Jill is an expert in the fields of nutrition and exercise physiology, and she sees this every day. Carbs are not always bad, but if you find yourself constantly craving them and choosing carb heavy dishes, there's probably something else going on. Sometimes it's as simple as dehydration. Or, you are in a vicious cycle of carb crashing. When this happens, the first thing you want is some form of carbohydrate. Listen in to hear Jill's advice on diet, as well we talk supplementation for inflammation and other things. You can shop our exclusive discount on our favorite Circumin supplement, which is great for lowering inflammation.
Healing After Loss with DeWone Bennett
DeWone Bennett joins us today to talk about healing after a loss and specifically rediscovering yourself after the loss of a loved one. Losing a loved one is so extremely difficult. DeWone is a licensed professional counselor with over 10 years of experience. DeWone chose this topic because it is something he deals with everyday since the loss of his daughter 15 years ago. DeWone tells us his own journey of healing after this loss and what helped him get through it. One thing that can be difficult is the thought of "getting over" that person. This can make you feel guilty and ashamed. But it is healthy to move forward in your own way.

DeWone talks about how powerful it is to tell others how you feel while you are grieving. Letting others in on your emotions is very cathartic and will help you feel as though you don't have to hide them. We all grieve and heal differently, especially something so difficult as the loss of a loved one. So, no one way is necessarily the right way. But if you feel like you don't know how to move on, listen to this episode with DeWone and reach out to someone.

  • PETA Founder and President: Ingrid Newkirk & Ali Miller: Anti-Anxiety Diet #1111

We are so honored to have a very special guest, Ingrid Newkirk, with us today. Along with Ingrid we have Ali Miller, and Shawn Wells in-studio with us.
PETA Founder and President: Ingrid Newkirk
Ingrid Newkirk is an inspiration. She is a leader in fighting for fair treatment of animals, and that is how PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) came to be. As a young girl, Ingrid witnessed some horrendous treatment to animals, and her passion and fire to fight for the voiceless became unstoppable. Before founding PETA, Ingrid was studying to be a stockbroker. When a neighbor of hers abandoned some kittens, she found herself at an animal shelter and decided to get a job. After cleaning kennels and investigating cruelty cases, Ingrid realized there needed to be an organization like PETA.

PETA now is the world’s largest animal rights organization. Ingrid is an abolitionist who remains committed to the premise that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. And they have inspired many others to do the same. The goal of PETA and other organizations that are like-minded, is that all living beings should be treated ethically. Today we have an open-ended conversation about some of Ingrid's stories and inspirations, and we talk about PETA's "We are All Animals Tour" which is what brought her to Dallas. You can find more about the event here.

**Ingrid is the author of Save the Animals! 101 Easy Things You Can Do, 50 Awesome Ways Kids Can Help Animals, The Compassionate Cook, 250 Ways to Make Your Cat Adore You, You Can Save the Animals: 251 Simple Ways to Stop Thoughtless Cruelty, Free the Animals, Making Kind Choices, Let’s Have a Dog Party!, One Can Make a Difference, and The PETA Practical Guide to Animal Rights. She has also been the subject of the HBO documentary I Am an Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA, spoken at many animal rights conferences, and written numerous articles on the treatment of animals in homes, slaughterhouses, circuses, and laboratories.
**Information was taken from her website.
    Anti-Anxiety Diet
Ali Miller is the author of the book, "Anti-Anxiety Diet Cookbook" In her book she teaches readers how to discover and treat the root causes of your body’s chemical imbalances using functional medicine approaches. The Anti-Anxiety Diet program supports mind-body balance that promotes relaxation and bliss. It also positively influences the biochemical and physiological functions of your body. Ali Miller joins us today to talk about her book, and specifically she gives us some anti-inflammatory foods. The importance of reducing inflammation is a big one, and most people don't know it.

Also in studio with us is Shawn Wells. Shawn is a registered dietitian and a certified sports nutritionist. They both talk about the importance of food for good mental health. The gut-brain connection is something that so many professionals are just now learning about. What we eat directly correlates to our brain function, so it is important to know what is good and bad. There is an event on Saturday morning that both Shawn and Ali will be speaking ...

  • The Addiction Stigma & Loneliness #1110

Today we talk with Dr. Jonathan Avery and Trey Laird about addiction and the stigma of addiction. Then we talk with DeWone Bennett about loneliness.
    Addiction Stigma and Trey's Story
Dr. Jonathan Avery, MD, is the director of psychiatry at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is a leading doctor talking about the stigma of addiction. This meaning, the difference in the way we as a culture view substance use addiction versus other mental illnesses. The stigma seems to be very judgmental toward substance use compared to other struggles that people go through. This stigma is what Dr. Jonathan is striving to change.

Trey Laird is the CEO and Founder of The Lighthouse Sober Living. For 22 years, Trey was a Wall Street equities trader. He travels regularly to share his story of recovery and to empower others to share their stories as well. Both Dr. Jonathan Avery and Trey are fighting the fight on the addiction stigma as well as the treatment. Because there are other mental and emotional challenges that come with substance use addiction, it makes for a prescription drug abundance. And this is something Dr. Jonathan Avery feels very strongly about. Listen in to hear their discussion!
    Loneliness with DeWone Bennett
DeWone Bennett talks with us today about the ins and outs of loneliness. DeWone is a licensed professional counselor with over 10 years of experience. He first tells us the difference between solitude and loneliness. A lot of people use the word "lonely" in the wrong context, because it is actually a feeling and not being physically alone. For example, someone can feel extremely lonely while around a group of people, or around their family and friends. This is an innermost feeling from something deeper going on. As a licensed counselor, DeWone knows how to get his clients through this. It is also EXTREMELY common, so if you feel this way you are not alone. The first step is to talk to someone about your feeling of loneliness. Then, you can work to make your way past it and start feeling like yourself again.

  • Vaccine-Free Living with Andreas Bachmair and Jackie Schlegel #1109

Today we do part 2 of our interview with Andreas Bachmair about Vaccine-Free Living, and Jackie Schlegel talks about Texans for Vaccine Choice.
    Vaccine-Free Living with Andreas Bachmair
Talking about the topic of vaccines can be extremely controversial. There are people who whole-heartedly believe that vaccines are a must and are totally safe. There is also a percent of people who believe the exact opposite. But what ever happened to choice? And freedom of speech? This topic seems to be black and white, when in reality there is SO much grey. Andreas Bachmair is the author of the book, "Vaccine Free: 111 Stories of Unvaccinated Children." This book does not talk about anything except for the amazing stories of children who are vaccine free and the difference in their health.

Andreas talks with us today about some of the recent studies going on with vaccine safety. He also talks with us about how the placebo effect with vaccines has never been studied. This information should give you chills. The science on the health of children who are vaccine free is astounding. They are hardly ever sick, and just all around healthier. Our bodies are amazing and capable of healing a variety of illnesses on their own. That's something that we have really lost touch of ever since the abundance of vaccines became available.
Jackie Schlegel - Texans for Vaccine Choice
Jackie also joins us today, she is the executive director for the group Texans for Vaccine Choice. She started this group after her daughter was vaccine injured at 4 months old. She talks with us about some of the amazing things happening for parents fighting for vaccine choice, and ways you can get involved. Go to their website to find out how! She also informs us that there is a VAXXED sequel, VAXXED II, which will be released in November. You can find a screening near you by visiting their website as well.

  • The Vaping Crisis, Understanding Trauma Bonds #1108

Today we talk with Dr. Jonny Bowden about the vaping crisis, and with Robin Perry Braun about understanding trauma bonds.
    The Vaping Crisis
I'm sure you've heard the recent news about people suffering from lung illness due to vaping. Vaping has taken the population by storm. It was marketed to be safe, and better than cigarettes for your health. Of course with anything that is profitable, everyone wants to jump in and make some money. The market became saturated with e-vaping devices, nicotine pods, and THC liquid for inhalation. You could literally buy it anywhere.  Dr. Jonny Bowden joins us today to talk about where we went wrong, and how this is so destructive to our health.

The vaping crisis is almost like what happened with cigarette's...on a smaller scale. Doctors at one point were telling pregnant mothers that smoking cigarettes was OK and will even ease your pregnancy! Oh, how the times have changed. But with vapes, the liquid is full of chemicals that simply have not been tested. And now, we are seeing the negative effects of long-term usage. Listen in to to hear Dr. Jonny talk about this, along with how vaping contributes to even more health related issues.
    Understanding Trauma Bonds
If you have never read or heard about the Stockholm syndrome, here is a link to read about it. To summarize, it is where the person who is kidnapped becomes bonded to their captor. It is a psychological thing that happens when you experience trauma, but that trauma usually ends with love and a deep connection. This is why a lot of people stay in abusive relationships. Robin Perry Braun joins us to talk about this today. She tells us exactly how that relationship may begin, because most times the abuse is absent until later on in relationships. And, she talks about how you can seek help if you feel you may be dealing with something like this.

  • 5G Network, Music’s Influence on Women, Eating Disorder Awareness #1107

Today we talk with Dr. Debra Greene about the potential effects of the 5G network. Dr. Mike McFarland talks about music's influence on attitudes toward women, and Dr. Stephanie Setliff talks about eating disorder awareness.
    The 5G Network
Dr. Debra Greene, PhD, is a mind-body medicine specialist and frequently quoted expert in the fields of energy medicine and energy psychology. Today she talks about some of the potential effects of the 5G network. We have talked about this in the past with Dr. Gabriel Cousens, a well-known American physician M.D., homeopath, and spiritual writer who practices holistic medicine.

The 5G network has rolled out in 40 cities in the United States. The science and description of 5G is explained so well by Dr. Greene today, and some of the statistics will shock you. We have become such a fast-moving society, we don't even have time to wonder what the long-term effects might be. Dr. Debra will be joining us again soon to continue this conversation.
Music's Influence on Attitudes Toward Women
Dr. Mike McFarland joins us today to talk about how music influences our attitudes toward women. Dr. Mike is a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Texas, with a private practice in Dallas. Dr. Mike talks about how some of the lyrics in today's pop and rap music is extremely derogatory toward women. This has such an impact on teens and adolescents developing brains, to an extent that we aren't really aware of. Parents have such a responsibility to know what their kids are watching, hearing, and being exposed to.

Dr. Mike reads some of the lyrics that are extremely aggressive and objectifying. The problem is that women are going along with it. We are becoming desensitized to it, to the point where women are believing it and even encouraging it. Kids will find a way to hear and see what they want to, but opening the dialogue with them may help them understand the context of these things.
    Eating Disorder Awareness
Dr. Stephanie Setliff is a child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist. She is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has specialized in the treatment of eating disorders for over 20 years. Today we talk with Dr. Setliff about eating disorders and what can be the catalyst to someone developing one. There is much more that goes into what makes someone prone to an eating disorder. On top of that, there is so much that goes into treating one.

Dr. Setliff talks with us about how to identify an eating disorder, and what the best steps are to take. Someone dies every 62 minutes from an eating disorder. We have to open the dialogue and create a safe zone for those who might be suffering.
