  • Food Cravings 101 & How to Influence a Healthy Lifestyle on Our Children #993

Jill Lane is always teaching us new tips and tricks to live a healthier lifestyle. She will tell you in this episode that she doesn't use the word 'healthy' because that can mean so many different things from person to person. When it comes to knocking out food cravings, usually there is a root cause for the craving that you need to pinpoint. You may have low serotonin or dopamine, or you may be depressed or anxious. You also may not be getting enough protein, fat, or carbohydrates and these will all make you crave different things. It can be physiological and psychological, but cravings are more than just having a sweet tooth. You have to dig into your overall health and see where the root lies.

Healthy lifestyles for our children can also mean a number of things and vary from person to person. But overall, we want our children to be able to have good influences so that when they are on their own making their own decisions they have something to fall back on. Parents are the #1 influence on children, more by what they do rather than what they say. You can tell a child all day long whats right and wrong, but at the end of the day if they see you following along certain habits they will think that is the norm. This goes for eating habits, the way we talk to each other and strangers, the way we treat people and ourselves, etc. Children are sponges, and DeWone teaches us where to start when it comes to teaching them healthy lifestyle habits.

  • Texans For Vaccine Choice Update & Why You Should Start Composting #992

Medicaid is an income based health insurance or for those with disabilities. When you receive this type of insurance, it can make finding a provider who will work with you on vaccines a little bit more difficult. These providers receive funding from the government, therefore they usually will be following strict guidelines. Sadly vaccines are an industry in themselves and if you aren't abiding by the CDC's schedule, you may get discriminated against. This effects these lower income families who may not have all the information to make an informed decision. Medical Doctors are even told not to give out that information. Providers have started turning people away or not seeing them based on their vaccine status. Jackie Schlegel is the founder and executive director for the organization Texans for Vaccine Choice. She talks to us about this and how she is fighting this discrimination at the state capitol.

Composting is so important when it comes to making a change to help minimize your carbon footprint. Stephanie Toups joins us today to tell us why you should compost and how to start. Organic matter in your trash, like fruits, veggies, and most table scraps, will break down without hurting the earth. However, when you put them in a plastic bag and throw it into a landfill, it makes the process much longer and releases methane gas. This is so terrible to our Mother Earth. We all need to do our small part to reduce our negative impacts on our environment.

Diana K. Rice work focuses on nutrition for the messy intersection of pregnancy, postpartum health and feeding tiny humans. When we become parents we really start to understand how the food we eat is so important to our health and development. We are always growing, changing, and adapting, so we have to nourish our bodies so well, especially our babies.

There are so many different views and opinions on when to start solids, how to start, and whether or not you feed them or let them feed themselves. Science and data seems to go back and forth. But today Diana talks to us about doing a process called baby-led weaning. This allows you to open up your dining table to your tiny human and let them feed themselves and be apart of the family time. Baby-led weaning is definitely becoming the most popular way of transitioning your baby to solids, but there are still precautions and milestones you need to look for with your baby.

It's psychology day with our favorite relationships counselor, Von Eaglin. Today we focus on signs that your relationship is over...womp womp womp (Debbie downer.) But this is an extremely important topic, especially for those out there that tend to stay in toxic, unhealthy relationships. Whether it be just for the companionship, or for the kids, you should always leave an unhealthy relationship.
