Australia's ban on social media for anyone under 16 isn't working. It's not even close says world renowned behavioral economist and Harvard Law School professor Dr Cass Sunstein. He's one of the authors of a new working paper that argues compliance has to reach a tipping point for the ban to work, a point when not going on TikTok and Instagram and all the other apps is the new normal and that's not happening. Dr Sunstein is also part of a team of researchers examining the link between social media and wellbeing in the World Happiness Report. Just like Australian teenagers, many of us use social media even though we know it's not good for us, because everyone else is. He explains what he calls the "product trap", the way certain platforms are designed to pull us in, and we let them, even when we suspect we'd be happier without them.
