Seizure management in patients with Dravet syndrome (DS), Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), or tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) can be extremely challenging, since current antiepileptic drugs, even in combination, are usually insufficient for preventing recurrent severe seizures associated with these treatment-resistant epilepsies. A prescription pharmaceutical formulation of highly purified cannabidiol (CBD) is approved for the treatment of seizures in patients 1 year of age or older with DS, LGS, and TSC, making it the first plant-derived cannabis-based medicine approved by the FDA.
