Psalm, Chapter 80
God Implored to Rescue His People from Their Calamities.
For the choir director; set to [a]El Shoshannim; [b]Eduth. A Psalm of Asaph.
80 Oh, give ear, Shepherd of Israel,
You who lead Joseph like a flock;
You who are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth!
- The title of this message is God implored to rescue his people from their calamities
o sometimes we need to Implore God
o beg someone earnestly or desperately to do something
- in this case Asaph was begging God to rescue His people
o notice Asaph refers to the people as His people (God’s people)
o to be rescued means saved
- From their calamities
o an event causing great and often sudden damage or distress; a disaster
o calamities is plural which means multiple such events
- For the choir director (so it’s meant to be a song, remembered and sang)
- Set to El Shoshannim
o El Shoshannim means “beauty of the innocent; pure, lily like virgins
- Eduth means “testimony” sometimes used to refer to the ten commandments
- A Psalm of Asaph which means “to gather or collect”
- Let me stitch this together
o People begged God to be saved
o God put a song in their mouth and made them Lilly white (innocent)
o This is the testimony of God who will do it and gather them together
- Oh give ear, Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock
o Asaph is asking the Shepherd of Israel to listen to His people
o There is only one Shepherd of Israel – Jesus Christ
o You who lead Joseph like a flock
§ Joseph represents God’s people and they kept blowing it
§ Like dumb sheep
§ But God overlooked their stupidity and sin and cared for them anyway
§ Joseph means “He will Add”
§ God adds the sheep even with all their faults.
§ And He will lead them like a flock (He moves them where necessary for their own good since they can’t help themselves)
- You who are enthroned above the Cherubim, shine forth!
o Notice where Jesus is “enthroned above the Cherubim in heaven”
o Seated in the most high place; a place of power and position of all
o Asaph wants to Him to shine forth (to allow the light to eliminate the darkness)
2 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up Your power
And come to save us!
- Ephraim – to be fruitful
o Joseph produced sons in the land of affliction
- Benjamin – son of the right hand
o A picture or type of Christ
- Manasseh – forgetting or evaporating
