On this Episode of Outside The Boards Podcast, I am really excited to introduce to you one of America’s polo legends and culinary businessman, Mr. Tim Gannon.
Outback is a synonym for polo in the United States. During the late 90s and early 2000s, Tim Gannon’s Outback Polo Team managed to win five US Open Championships, the first team to achieve such a feat. Led by Tim Gannon, who has been an active polo player since 1992, the team was one of the greatest sponsors of the game in America. As a recognition, the United States Polo Association honored him in 1999 with the USPA Sponsor of the Year award for his contribution to polo.
After winning back to-back US Opens in 1999 and 2000, Outback Polo Team won their third US Open Championship in a row in 2001, an achievement no other polo team has ever managed to replicate. However, Tim’s passion for polo surpassed the US as he played actively in England, Spain, Argentina, Dubai and Uruguay too.
Throughout the years, Outback Polo Team was represented by some of the best polo players in the world. Polo legend Adolfo Cambiaso may be the most important one, but other players such as Lolo Castagnola, Sebastián Merlos, Mike Azzaro and Julio Arellano also wore Outback's jersey. As Gannon was an early promoter of women’s polo, the late Sunny Hale also played for his team and won the US Open too.
In 2013, as a recognition for what he did for the sport during the past decades, Gannon was
inducted into the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame. Tim passed his passion for polo to his son Chris, who is also a polo player and continues his fathers legacy.
In 2021, Tim Gannon along with other field patrons started the Welling Polo Tour. A 16-Goal league in Wellington Florida that runs from January through April. Now in its third season, the tour will be a part of the USPA Florida Circuit 16-Goal Super Series, which includes as many as 16 participating teams.
Tim has had a incredible polo and business journey that is worthy of a documentary and taught MBA schools. I had a great time speaking with Tim and feel honored to call him my friend. I really hope you enjoy this podcast.

Jeff Hall is the all-American story. Raised in Santa Barbara, CA and Houston, TX, Hall began riding horses at just four years old. His father, an enthusiastic polo sponsor, instilled a passion for the sport. By the time Jeff was seven he had already decided what he wanted for his future. His dream of becoming a professional polo player became a reality at 12 years old and he hasn’t looked back since.
Jeff Hall has won every high-goal trophy in the U.S. polo including the most prestigious, the U.S. Open. Jeff is also one of only a handful of American players to have played in the highly regarded Argentine Open. Currently holding a 7-goal handicap, Jeff is one of the best players in the world, and one of just a few highly rated American players. Although Jeff travels throughout the year, he calls his Houston ranch, New Pueblo, home where he enjoys life with his wife and sons. They also reside in Wellington, Florida during the Palm Beach polo season.
Jeff is another player who embodies the sport’s spirit. An adrenaline junkie with a passion for the outdoors, even the most leisure of activities. Jeff has achieved almost everything you can achieve in this game. With that he will be recognized for his achievements and have his name placed among the sport’s greatest. Congratulations to Jeff and the Hall family. I feel honored to have gotten to know Jeff and excited to watch his Hall of Fame season.

On this Episode of Outside The Boards Podcast, I am really excited to introduce to you one of polo’s global leaders in the sport, Mr. Alex Taylor, Chief Executive Officer of the Federiation of International Polo and last year’s FIP World Championship’s Tournament Director.
Prior to joining the FIP in 2015, many had known Alex Taylor from his years as a Council of Administration Member and Treasurer at the Argentine Association of Polo. He has extensive commercial experience and during his time as CEO of FIP he has been the power behind ensuring that the FIP By-Laws are finally compliant with the Uruguay authority’s requirements, working with the AAP, USPA & HPA on the International Rules and of course the outstanding success of the recent FIP 10th World Championship in the United States in Florida.
Alex grew up around polo at the iconic Tortugas Country Club influenced by his father and uncle. He would pick up the mallet and beginning playing between the ages of 6 and 7 and purchased his first horse at 28, playing chukkers whenever he could.
Today, Alex lives 400 kilometers south of Buenas Aires on his farm while leading the sport’s world governing body.
Alex has been a part of polo’s global expansion and organization since the very beginning. Despite the sport’s age, the global organization of the game is still very young and it is amazing to listen to its rapid growth. Sometimes we forget how truly global the game is today, with Alex at helm this is all changing.

On this Episode of Outside The Boards, we are excited to welcome United States Polo Association’s Chief Operating Officer and In House Counsel, Mr. Chris Green.
Instrumental in writing and implementing rules which effect polo at all levels, Chris Green has spent the last six years behind the scenes learning the inner workings of the Association before stepping into the role of COO and In-House Counsel. A member of the USPA for over forty years, Green was first introduced to the game in his twenties in Kentucky and now plays both outdoor polo at Giant Valley Polo Club in Hamden, Connecticut and arena at Gardner Town Polo Club in Newburgh, New York. Mentoring, umpiring and helping to mount Gardner Town’s interscholastic and middle school players, the former Governor-at-Large has actively shaped the future of polo, volunteering his time and expertise on several USPA committees over the years.
Born in Lexington, Kentucky, Green grew up in the horse racing industry, briefly attending Princeton University before coming home to breed and train thoroughbreds. Returning to college after deciding to make a career change, the poetry enthusiast and avid reader studied English at the University of Kentucky and went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. Taking a hiatus from polo to focus on law school and starting a new career as a litigator, Green and his family moved to the Hudson Valley in New York where he has been a partner in the international law firm Boies, Schiller Flexner since 2003.
Green’s genuine love for polo is felt from your first conversation with him. Bringing a solid understanding of the rules as Chairman of the Rules/Rules Interpretation Committee and a wealth of knowledge in sports law, Green is looking forward to helping the Association draw more players to the game by creating the best experience possible for its existing members.

On this Episode of Outside The Boards, we are excited to welcome La Fe Polo Team Patron and Player, Louis Devaleix, one of today’s most visible and talked about players and teams in professional polo.
Taking his first polo lesson just three years ago, Louis Devaleix is preparing for his team’s return to Florida high-goal polo season. Born in France but growing up in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, before coming to the United States, Devaleix’s newfound passion for polo launched the adrenaline junkie from the golf course to the polo field seemingly overnight. Surrounding himself with elite athletes including 10-goaler Hilario Ulloa and undisputed basketball legend and fellow golfer Michael Jordan, the 41-year-old has already achieved a significant milestone in his budding polo career, raising the 2021 and 2022 East Coast Open trophy. Originally only planning to compete in the 18-goal season, Devaleix made the last-minute decision to go all in with La Fe in the GAUNTLET OF POLO® and pursue the most prestigious titles in American polo.
Although Devaleix does not fit the typical polo player mold at a brawny 6’4”, he is a strong defensive presence and devoted student of the game. Humbled by the sacrifices of his pros which have allowed him to play polo, Devaleix is soaking up every opportunity to learn from their experience while finding the time to bond over Argentine asados and Brazilian barbeques.
Since living in the United States full time he balances his career in healthcare IT with his young son and now a full polo schedule. Quickly becoming an ambassador for the sport both locally and internationally, Devaleix’s path has introduced his family and friends to polo through Global Polo TV and even inspired his business partner to take up the sport. Although coming in as a 20-goal team, La Fe’s commitment to their game is evident as Devaleix aims to make an even stronger showing intheir second year competing in the GAUNTLET.

On this Episode of Outside The Boards, I am really excited to introduce you to player, patron and owner of Cotterel Polo Farms, Jennifer Lutterel Benardoni. Cotterel is a private polo facility and organization owned by Jenny and managed by husband Francisco located in Declo, Idaho… a polo power couple if there ever was one! They breed and train polo horses with the goal of attracting teams to have a customizable, fun, and competitive summer polo in a place they love and call home.
Cotterel has three polo fields, 160 stalls, exercise track and an onsite 25 room luxury lodge renovated from the original 2 story barn, originally used for working draft horses from the 1920’s.
Apart from the Summer seasons, Jenny also competes in medium-goal and low-goal competitive polo in both USA and Argentina.
Jenny is originally from Salt Lake City, UT and got her start in horses from her mom, Claudia Luttrell who showed Saddlebreds and Arabians while she was growing up. Jenny started showing Saddle Seat in her early teens, and while she loved it, having seen polo on tv and magazines, she really wanted to try it! She got her chance when she attended Colorado State University, a now polo powerhouse in intercollegiate polo.
From that first hit of the ball, Jenny was instantly hooked and never looked back. After graduating with a Bachelors in Equine Science, Jenny moved to Denver and joined the Denver Polo Club. In 2004 she created the Cotterel Polo Team and started traveling to play polo all year long. In 2014, she and her husband Francisco moved their polo operation to Jenny’s family ranch in Declo, Idaho.
Jennifer is one of polo’s leading women who has carved her own path in the way of breeding polo ponies and creating a unique polo experience for serious players in one of America’s most picturesque settings.

On this Episode of Outside The Boards Podcast, I am really excited to introduce to you Brandon Phillips, a polo player, cancer survivor and founder of Polo For Life. An organization that raises money to help pediatric cancer patients and their families from diagnosis and treatment to survivorship and long-term follow-up.
Brandon is a professional polo player. During his career, he won many of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments. However, winning these tournaments is not the biggest victory he has achieved…surviving stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is.
Everything seemed to be falling into place for the young Phillips until the day he woke up with severe swelling and aching pain in his left leg. Twenty-four hours later, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and given a prognosis of six weeks to live. Phillips was just 14 years old.
Phillips endured five grueling months of intensive chemotherapy sessions yet never lost his spirit nor accepted death as an option. He beat the odds and went into remission.
Brandon vowed to dedicate his life to pursuing what he loved most…polo. Later, he would fuse his passion for polo with his desire to help families facing the dreadful challenge of surviving childhood cancers.
Brandon is an incredible human being who has faced tremendous odds at such a young age. He has taken his experience and has become an inspiration for millions of kids and their parents who are facing pediatric cancer. Brandon is a symbol of hope and his story should be told to millions who are faced with this disease.

OUTSIDE THE BOARDS™ PODCAST
SEASON #2 | EPISODE #9: Agapito Morgan & Dale Johnson
RECORDED: April 15th, 2022
On this Episode of Outside The Boards, I’m incredibly excited to welcome all of you to this Episode of Outside The Boards Podcast and introduce my next guests Mr. Agapito Morgan and Dale Johnson, Chairman and Committee Member of the United States Polo Association’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
Aga Morgan currently serves as the Commercial Healthcare Leader with Key Bank. In this role, he is focused on growing Key’s national commercial banking healthcare business in collaboration with healthcare industry coverage teams within KeyBanc Capital Markets, Enterprise Healthcare Payments and Consumer Banking. Additionally, he serves as Co-Chair of the Commercial Bank’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council and as a member of the Bank’s Commercial Credit Risk Committee.
Aga is originally from Washington D.C. and now lives in Weston Connecticut. His path in polo begin 8 years ago when he was introduce to polo by a close friend. Not knowing what he was getting into he took a lesson at Yale University. The first time he hit the ball clean, he was hooked. He would go on to immerse himself into the sport. Today, Morgan is a member of the Yale Polo Club, but has played extensively around the country.
Dale Johnson is currently the Manager of Global Platforms for Visa ,and is the Founder of the Equine Chain. A company created to credential horses on the blockchain. Dale is from Oakland California, and recently returned to his hometown after living in San Francisco’s Bay Area. Dale’s involvement with horses and ultimately polo began generations earlier with his grandfather who was as a horseman on a cattle ranch north of Houston, his grandfather, Papa Charlie, who was slave from Georgia, founded the ranch with his wife Penny. Everyone up until Dale’s grandfather was born on the ranch. All the fundamentals of horsemanship never left and trickled down to Dale’s father and ultimately him. Dale’s introduction to polo came from a visit to Buneas Aires and the purchase of pair of polo boots. He came home and spent his first bonus on a polo clinic. But unlike hiting a ball or the thrill of riding, Dale was attracted to the game by how challenging it was.
Aga and Dale are doing incredible things for the sport and are looking to change polo’s image and become a more inclusive and accessible sport to everyone interested in picking up a mallet. Their success at the Detroit Polo Club, which you will learn more on this podcast, is a perfect model to expand to other locations across the country and I look forward at the prospect of creating a similar program in Chicago. I am honored to call Aga and Dale friends and excited to see them continue to do great things for the game.

Founded in 1922 by legendary businessman, Paul Butler, the Oak Brook Polo Club is an American Polo treasure and one of the oldest polo clubs in the United States. To honor this historic occasion, the Oak Brook Polo Club has invited Club friends and family to share stories and their most fondest memories of visiting and playing at Oak Brook. Join as we take listeners down memory lane with some of the sport’s household names while they share their experiences at Oak Brook and the impact the Club and its founder’s have played on their lives. Welcome to this Outside The Boards special podcast edition, with your host Danny O’Leary.
My guests on today’s podcast need no introduction, the legendary Jorie Butler Kent, daughter of Paul Butler, and her daughter Reute Butler. Both women are gifted riders and polo players themselves with multiple accolades tied to their names and success on the field. Jorie won numerous horse show and jumping event championships by the time she was 17. From 1967 to 1979, Jorie served as the director of the Butler’s Sports Core where she built and managed the Oak Brook Bath & Tennis Club and Oak Brook Polo Club. Jorie continued her interest in polo and would become the first woman member along side Sue Sally Hale to be rated by the USPA in 1971. Her daughter Reute also found success on the field having organized and played in Oak Brook’s first ever Junior Challenge Trophy and both played and sponsored two Sun Ranch polo Teams. Reute is currently the President of the Friends of Conversation, an organization founded by her mother Jorie 1982. one of the world's earliest leaders in the development of community conservation in Masai Mara of Kenya.
Jorie and Reute are two of polo’s most important women and glass sealing breakers having paved the way for many in the game. I’m thrilled to have them on this podcast and hope you enjoy this conversation and pulling back the curtain to reveal some great Oak Brook Polo stories.
