 Founded in 1922 by legendary businessman, Paul Butler, the Oak Brook Polo Club is an American Polo treasure and one of the oldest polo clubs in the United States. It was once the sport's epicenter for elite professional polo and served as home to the U.S. Open Polo Championship for twenty-four straight seasons and other prestigious international and national polo tournaments. 

In 2022, the Oak Brook Polo Club will be celebrating its 100th anniversary and will be returning to its original and masterpiece field, the Cecil Smith Field.

To honor this historic occasion, the Oak Brook Polo Club has invited Club friends and family to share stories and their most fondest memories of visiting and playing at Oak Brook. My guest on this podcast episode is Bob Puetz, who you all might know as the United States Polo Association’s former CEO and General Manager of the Santa Barbara and San Diego Polo Clubs. Bobby is originally from the Chicago western suburbs. Oak Brook was responsible for opening almost all of the doors for Bobby having played in Oak Brook for well over a decade beginning in the late 70’s to the early 90’s before taking his career out west. Bobby began playing in his teens after begging Steve Kuhn. Bobby would fall in love with the game immediately and later became a pro for Tom Wigdahl along with his sons John and David which began his career at Oak Brook. Bobby is a very close friend to the Oak Brook Polo Club, Michael Butler and the Butler Family, and I feel honored to have worked alongside him and to call him my friend. We are thrilled to have him on this special podcast.

The guest on this podcast episode is Mike Dailey, who was a member of Michael Butler’s pool house gang along with Joel Baker and Stuart MacKenzie if you remember from Episode #2. Mike was born and raised in Hawaii. His father helped revive the sport of polo post WWII in WyKiKi. The later part of the 60’s, Mike went Culver Academies in Indiana. Mike’s father, originally from Aurora, Illinois was a member of the Black Horse Troop alongside Paul Butler which was his exposure to the sport and where he got started. Mike watched polo at Oak Brook as a kid when his father was a USPA Board Member. Mike grew up playing in Hawaii and got his big polo break when Michael asked Mike to played on his team in England in the early 70’s. Butler & Dailey would become great friends traveling and playing together. Mike is a great friend of the Oak Brook Polo Club and Butler Family and close friend to Michael Butler. We are thrilled have him on this special podcast.

My guest on this podcast episode is Dr. Richard Caleel, who you all might know as the Federation of International Polo’s former President. But did you know his first experience with polo began at the Oak Brook Polo Club? That’s right, Dr. Caleel got involved in the sport of polo in his mid-thirties after a friendly dare while attending a polo match at Oak Brook. Little did he know at the time, that dare would be life altering. The fast-paced sport appealed to the young doctor and would play a major role in his life that began in Oak Brook and end in Santa Barbara where he has retired.  Dr. Caleel is dear friend to the Butler Family and has numerous stories of his time as a player and spectator at Oak Brook. The guest on Episode #2 of this podcast is Joel Baker. Joel grew up in Southern California near the Will Rogers Polo Club where he met Ted Turner who helped introduce him to the sport walking ponies to and from the polo field. His work in polo helped pay for his other talent as snow skier where he competed on the U.S. Junior Ski Team. At the age of 12, Joel began to stick and ball and played his first game with Bill Mavery. Joel heard about Oak Brook from his time at Santa Barbara from players like Ronnie Tongg, my guest from Episode #1. Joel was invited to play in Oak Brook 1974 by Michael Butler and lived in Michael’s pool house along with Stewart McKenzie and Mike Dailey. You can imagine the stories from a house of 20 somethings. Today, Joel continues to be a dear friend to Oak Brook Polo and the Butler Family and we are thrilled to have on this special podcast.

My first guest on this podcast is the legendary Hawaii polo great, Ronnie Tongg. Ronnie’s affiliation with Oak Brook Polo Club began back in 1960 as teenager when he visited the Club to watch the U.S. Open Polo Championship. At that time he came with his father who helped build a couple of polo club’s in Hawaii who would later win the Open in 1962 and would ultimately become the owner of the Santa Barbara Polo Club. Ronnie would visit Oak Brook numerous times over the course of two decades as a groomer, player and spectator. He is a dear friend to the Club and the Butler Family and we are thrilled to have him on this special podcast.

In this captivating episode, we have the privilege of conversing with Erica Gandomcar-Sachs, a remarkable figure in the world of polo and a true trailblazer in her generation.

Erica's deep-rooted connection to polo, stemming from her upbringing in a polo-centric family, has made her an embodiment of the sport and one of its most fervent advocates. Her parents, John and Chris Gandomcar, established Cottonwood Riding Club, Home Of The Denver Polo Club, in 1982, immersing Erica in the sport from a very young age and acquainting her with the multifaceted world of polo.

Erica's prowess extends beyond the polo field; she is a master of multitasking, balancing her roles as both a player and club manager. Her influence and impact in the Rocky Mountain region's polo scene have become legendary. Collaborating with her sister, Tara, they carry forward the legacy initiated by their parents, diligently crafting an inclusive, multigenerational equestrian community.

Erica's journey led her to Colorado State University, where she studied and played intercollegiate polo. Her remarkable dedication earned her Regional All-Star and All-American status throughout her four years at CSU. In her debut year, CSU clinched the Regional Championship and secured second place in the National Championship.

Notably, Erica was honored with the title of USPA Women of The Year, a testament to her tireless efforts within the realm of polo and women's polo. Serving as a USPA Circuit Governor since 2014, actively participating in various committees, and establishing three charitable foundations exemplify her unwavering commitment to the sport. Remarkably, she seamlessly combines her roles as a devoted wife, mother, and accomplished horse trainer.

In this episode of Outside The Boards, we have the honor of interviewing Dr. Richard Caleel, the former President of the Federation of International Polo.

The exhilaration of the fast-paced sport captured his heart, and it became a significant part of his life, spanning from Chicago to Santa Barbara.

His polo adventures took him on a global odyssey, providing him with once-in-a-lifetime thrills. This included facing off against one of the world's greatest polo players, Adolfo Cambiaso, and receiving the Most Improved Player of the Year award from His Royal Highness, Prince Charles.

After retiring from the sport, Richard's passion for polo remained undiminished. He became deeply involved with the Federation of International Polo, assuming the role of an Ambassador. In this capacity, he played a pivotal role in fostering the sport's growth across the world, spanning North, Central, and South Americas, Europe, India, China, and various other countries. In 2012, he was elected as the FIP's sixth president, during which time he enhanced communication among its members and introduced polo to several new nations, including Russia, Mongolia, and China, by assisting local enthusiasts in developing the sport within their countries.

Richard's unwavering commitment to polo as an ambassador continues to shape the sport's landscape. His profound love for the game and tireless advocacy have expanded the world of polo across the globe, leaving a lasting legacy that has enriched the sport's global presence. Under his guidance, the world of polo has reached new horizons and thrives in a better place today.

In this engaging episode, I am delighted to introduce my dear friend and fellow Chicagoland polo enthusiast, Mr. Chris Vangel. Chris's journey into polo began during his teenage years, where he had the privilege of playing alongside notable figures such as Adam Butler, son of Oak Brook Polo Club founder Paul Butler, and the esteemed polo professional Horacio Onetto.

What sets Chris apart and compelled me to have him as my guest is his striking contrast to the typical stereotypes associated with polo players. At first glance, he exudes an aura reminiscent of a former black ops Marine or one of Tony Soprano's underbosses. He carries a rugged, cigar-wielding appearance that might make you think twice, but beneath this exterior lies a representation of the social and approachable facet of polo—the very essence that draws numerous individuals to this remarkable sport.

Chris is not only a proficient amateur player but also a successful entrepreneur, actively participating as a patron in Chicago Polo's 8 and 12-goal leagues. He embodies the spirit of polo that embraces camaraderie, good-heartedness, and friendly competition—a testament to the welcoming community that surrounds the sport.

As one of my dearest friends in polo, I am thrilled to introduce you to Chris. He radiates positivity, showcases immense talent on the field, and embodies the qualities that make him a treasured addition to any polo club. In this episode, we shine the spotlight on the remarkable American polo sensation, Mr. Jared Zenni. Hailing from the Chicagoland area in Lake Bluff, Illinois, and a recent graduate of the University of Miami, Jared has rapidly ascended as a rising star in the world of professional polo.

Jared's journey into polo began at a young age, and it didn't take long for him to recognize his innate talent and the burning desire to excel in the sport. By the age of 14, he had already achieved a 1-goal handicap and received an invitation to join the United States Polo Association's prestigious Team USPA. This program is dedicated to nurturing the potential of high-rated American players, providing them with mentorship and resources to hone their skills and talents.

One of Jared's defining moments came when, at a remarkable 5-goal handicap, he led his father's Daily Racing Forum Team to a triumphant victory in the 2018 U.S. Open Polo Championship, prevailing against the highly-favored Valiente team. Jared's exceptional discipline and defensive prowess earned him the MVP title, and he contributed two crucial goals in the final match. In that same year, Jared and his team qualified for the prestigious Hurlingham Open in England and the illustrious Argentine Open in Palermo.

Today, Jared has elevated his handicap to an impressive 6 goals and is currently showcasing his skills in Argentina, with aspirations of competing in the pinnacle of polo, the Argentine Open. He will soon return to Florida for the high-goal season, representing Team Daily Racing Form and Cessna polo teams. Join us as we delve into the incredible journey of Jared Zenni, a shining star in the world of polo.
