By 1981, The Police had 3 hit records and the respect of their peers and the music industry. But meddling from the record company caused Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers to retreat to Canada and the isle of Montserrat to record their 4th album Ghost in the Machine.
Producer Hugh Padgham had them work in separate rooms to get their sounds but it also may have been to keep them from each others throats as the band were known for fighting over their studio parts. Sting had developed into the lead songwriter and wrote the big singles Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Invisible Sun and Spirits in the Material World as he had all their previous hits. But he sought to incorporate synthesizers, piano, horns and some of the reggae influences from their punk/ska peers and their island surroundings. Of course Stewart and Andy had to push back on some of his ideas but you can't deny the results as it was their biggest selling album to that point and was the predecessor to their biggest record of all time, Synchronicity.
Special thanks to Paul Stephenson of Vintage Rock Pod for the inspiration as his recent interview with Stewart Copeland gave us the idea to review this wonderful album.

In this episode of Rock is Lit, Chris Charlesworth talks about Elvis’ Gold Records album, when Chris’ dad took him to see The Beatles in England in 1963, seeing The Who with Keith Moon on drums, what he’d ask Elvis if he could, one of the inspirations for his novel 'Caught in a Trap: The Kidnapping of Elvis'—the novel 'The Fan Club' by Irving Wallace, published in 1974—and the research Chris did on Elvis for his novel, mixing fact with fiction, the significance of the year 1975 for Elvis and in 'Caught in a Trap', Elvis’ relationship with his manager Colonel Tom Parker, the Memphis Mafia, what it might have been like for Elvis if he’d been able to step outside his insulated bubble, what the Baz Luhrmann movie about Elvis got right and wrong.
In the final segment, Stephanie Myers talks about real-world examples of kidnap plots against Elvis, including one that happened in the mid-1970s in Las Vegas and an attempt to rob Elvis’ grave after his death.

Jonny Hawkins is the electrifying frontman of Nothing More who also has a more contemplative side, as evidenced by the Spirits personality test he created over the last few years. Here he takes us through the process of how he made it. Jonny also shares a surreal dream he had connected to his grandfather's first Alzheimer's incident.

Without repeating the details, over the years, John Hiatt has assumed the status of legend in LTA lore....go back to episode 100 if you need a refresher. His life story is the focus of episode 160 of the show. Is this episode any good? Have a little faith......
Welcome to Love That Album.
My friend of many years and fellow Hiatt fan Geoff Smith joins me as we welcome radio announcer and author Michael Elliott to the show. He has written the first ever biography of John Hiatt called “Have A Little Faith: The John Hiatt Story”. The book looks his life and work. The first half of the book tells the story of a talented songwriter who has faced adversity through family trut broken, substance abuse, and personal tragedy. In the 21t century, it' also unthinkable that an artist would go through three major labels before finding some public success at the fourth. His circumstances would have weakened many....but through his own determination, and the respect of his peers, Hiatt found his way.
Michael has written a wonderful book that while never salacious, doesn't shy away from the hardships of Hiatt's early life. We speak about how he tried many musical styles before he settled on what was true and honest artistically for him. We speak about songcraft, humour, the connection to David Bowie, why Emmylou Harris makes everything better, and many other topics around Hiatt's life and Michael's book.
My gratitude to Geoff for coming up with some great questions for Michael and bringing in his own experiences with John Hiatt. Also huge thanks goes to Michael for providing an entertaining discussion around his biographical subject.
If you feel so inspired to grab a copy of Have A Little Faith, you can find the links to any number of book stores at https://michael-elliott.com/. The site also has links to numerous articles Michael has written over the years for a variety of publications about all manner of musicians. If you live outside of the US, just walk into your local book store and tell them to order you a copy pronto.

If you’d consider writing an iTunes review I’d be immensely grateful. However, it’d be even better if you told a friend about the podcast and Pantheon – at a barbecue, over coffee, on social media….whatever way you choose, consider me grateful.
Proudly Pantheon.

This was the marquee event I’d been chasing. From hearing the Red Hot Chili Peppers for the first time in ninth grade to seeing my music buddy in their tour shirt.
After nearly a decade of fandom, what’s it like to see one of the biggest names in rock ’n’ roll?
