Century Club is your weekly shot of what's new in music. Every week, the Tunes & Tumblers team bring you a mini pairing of a recent release and a craft shooter to keep your quarantine interesting. Make all the shots to enter the esteemed club yourself.
It's the most wonderful time of the year. Pride Month is in full swing and we're here to soak up every rainbow-drenched drop. Literally. This year, we get the party started right with "This Hell," the latest banger from acclaimed pop artist Rina Sawayama, an affirmational queer anthem that goes down best with Pedro's signature Rainbow Shot. Plus we take the NSFW history of disco head-on, throw massive shade on all the corporate Pride events begging for your dollars, and reveal what the heck a Nancy Reagan stamp has to do with Pride anyway.
But it wouldn't be Century Club if we didn't keep the hits coming with a special musical guest. LA electropop singer-songwriter Grace Kay drop by the pod to play an exclusive stripped version of her latest single "overgrown." She has a gift for producing refined and punchy songs, with lush vocal textures and nostalgic lyrics that will have you crying on the train while listening to Fleetwood Mac. This version of "overgrown" can only be heard here, so stick around for that tasty slice of dessert. Cheers, fam!

Pierce Turner and I begin this episode talking about castles and end it discussing Patsy Cline & Roy Orbison. But in between we do manage to touch on his career. He’s been playing music since he was a kid in Ireland in the 60’s. He couldn’t help it; it was all around him. His mom had her own band and the family had their own music store. And as a 14 year old kid, he was in charge of inventory! He was even in a 60’s Irish version of a boy band. But he wanted to start writing his own music, so he struck out on his own, which led him and a bandmate to fly to NYC with no plan; not even a place to stay when they landed! His first recordings in America almost ruined his career by attracting a bunch of weird Aleister Crowley fanatics!
But he started writing music for modern dance and working with Philip Glass before starting a true solo career. His sound has shifted over the decades, including ditching the traditional band format and working only with string quartets. His new album features David Bowie guitarist Gerry Leonard and a rhythm section of Tony Shanahan from Patti Smith & Beck and Yuvel Lion from David Byrne. It’s called Terrible Good, because that’s exactly what it is. And Philip Glass returns! Check it out in the usual places. Check out Pierce’s website, pierceturner.com for more info. You can show support with a cup of coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety, picking up a shower curtain or two at performanceanx.threadless.com. Today’s guest is Colin Peterik. If that name sounds familiar, you know your stuff. Colin is the son of Jim Peterik, who wrote some of the biggest hits of the 70’s & 80’s with Vehicle by Ides Of March Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor, & Hold On Loosely by .38 Special. Colin talks about growing up in the industry. He remembers being woken up at 6am by his dad working out some of these hits on the piano. Colin’s influences are wide-ranging. There’s the obvious link to his dad, but he was equally influenced by prog rock, Steely Dan, & skateboarding. He’s even the singer & keyboardist for a Steely Dan tribute band called Brooklyn Charmers.
His first solo album is coming out. It’s called Everything and Nothing and it is a fun listen. There is such a wide variety of styles. Colin discusses his studio process and if there might be a father/son duet in the future. Check Colin out on Instagram @colin_peterik_music & twitter @ColinPeterik. Pick up the album at colinpeterik.com or wherever you get music. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. Rate & review us & all the other great podcasts on the Pantheon Podcast Network. Merch is available at performanceanx.threadless.com. You cam also support us through ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Let’s get right into it with Colin Peterik on Performance Anxiety.
