The 1950s were an awesome time for music. And when rock and roll crossed paths with television, it blew the doors off of post-war America and changed everything it touched. These artists built the foundation of modern music and you can still hear their influence on artists 70 years later. Elvis. Chuck Berry. Buddy Holly. And more.
But the story isn’t all sock hops and poodle skirts. The history of early rock and roll also contains stories of tragedy, scandal, and racism that ended this early era as quickly as it started.
On today’s episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re taking a look at the beginning of rock music and the 1950s.

What started as a new beginning went horribly wrong...
After the controversy in the early 90s, Michael Jackson was eager to get his life and career back on track. After all, he had a new family to support and an album in the works. Unfortunately, these plans unraveled. Michael Jackson had a massive falling out with Sony records and a clash with notable producer, Tony Mattola. The Invincible album, which was supposed to mark a comeback for the King of Pop, fell flat. All the while, Michael accrued massive debts and struggled quietly with substance abuse.

After his time with EMI (and all of those Beatles records), Sir George Martin founded AIR Studios, opening multiple locations. This week, the Imbalanced Brothers focus on AIR Montserrat, a tropical paradise with a world-class recording studio! The story is well-told in "Under The Volcano," which is airing on Showtime and Hulu!
Dozens of well-known albums were made there between Climax Blues Band's opening of the place, and The Stones' "Steel Wheels," the studio's final project before tragedy strikes. Markus and Ray tell the tale of those halcyon days of the recording business, and the double-sided sword that Mother Nature tosses at the island, that takes the life of Martin's tropical dream.
Along the way, Gracie Otto's directorial depiction of those days has caused both of our hosts to consider an adventurous return to those hallowed studio grounds. 'Til then, enjoy the trip inside this episode!
