In this week's episode, Kaila speaks candidly with Kayode (a previous Parent Tell guest, heard on Episode 3: Let's Hear It For The Dads) about her experiences growing up as a biracial child in the 90s and his experiences so far as a black father to biracial children in the 21st century. Kaila and Kayode encounter similarities in their stories, as well as a few notable differences. It is vital for honest conversations, just like this one, to become the norm; where we are setting the foundation for our children to be antiracist, represented in the world they live in, and loved because of every part of who they are. The relationship that you have with your significant other pre-baby is not going to be the same relationship you have with your significant other post-baby. There's just no doubt about that. The kicker is that this may often catch you off guard (as you will hear Kaila and her guest, Willa, openly discuss in this episode) because the hurdles a relationship is suddenly faced with when a baby is added to the mix is yet another topic that no one really talks about honestly. Cue Kaila and Willa: here to be open and honest about how their relationships with their significant others have transformed since becoming parents. Here to parent and tell you about it.

While more of the world is learning the facts of PPD (postpartum depression) and just how common it actually is, postpartum anxiety (PPA) is additionally considered the most common childbirth complication. Kaila was thrilled to talk with Jess from Only You Podcast this week about PPA; Jess shares what her experience with PPA was like as well as what forms of support helped her the most. Anxiety sprouts up when we feel out of control of our surroundings, choices, thoughts, and feelings and that is basically exactly what happens when you birth a baby and become a parent in charge of a tiny, helpless human bean. Kaila and Jess discuss the ins and outs of anxiety and happily share what they do to *nicely* tell that b*tch to calm down. Let's Tell About It.

In celebration of being parents for a full damn year (and in the middle of a global pandemic, thank you very much), Kaila tells her birth story with the help of the one and only Jimmy. Starting from the moment actual contractions kicked in to the importance of having vomit bags handy post birth, Kaila and Jimmy recount the way the birth of their son all went down. Being able to say that you have kept a tiny human being alive for a whole year is no small feat. Let's Tell About It.

When was the last time you really just played? For kids, play is happening all day every day, but as adults who have all too often lost sight of our inner child play is then pigeonholed into one definition and therefore no longer appeals to us. We tend to think that play is really just the work of children while us big, "important" adults have better, more productive things to do. But the reality is that rediscovering your love of play as well as learning about the many complex layers of play will help you to better understand how and why your child loves to play and why it matters so much to both children and adults.
This week Kaila peels back the curtain behind everything play related and how to encourage your child and your often stubborn self to love play with Sivanne, a parent coach, progressive educator, mama and early childhood specialist. Sivanne is a play enabler; following nearly two decades in the classroom she now supports children through her work as The Joyous Parent, Sivanne guides parents to be confident they are raising creative, resilient LIFE ready kids...through the art of play! Check out her work at www.thejoyousparent.com and join the joyous journey on @thejoyousparent on FB and Instagram.

The fact is, it's ultimately not up to the birthing person how a baby is born. And that can be really hard to grapple with, especially when you've been pregnant for almost 10 months and you just want to feel even an ounce of control over something for a minute. This week Kaila talks with friend, Amber, about her birth story and what it was like to have an unexpected C-section. While we always know in the back of our heads that it could happen, most birthing people do not go to the hospital thinking that their birthing plans are about to radically change. Whether it's vaginal or belly birth, one thing remains true: birth is birth and you are a kick ass person for going through it. Let's Tell About It.

Don't let anyone ever fool you with the phrase "sleep like a baby" ever again after listening to Kaila and her guest, Christina, talk about how excruciating sleep deprivation is for parents as well as for tiny babes. Aside from the fact that babies are extremely loud when they sleep (we're talking grunting, crying while still being asleep, and strangely loud sighs), they do not know how to sleep through the night when they are born. It falls to the parent to teach a baby how to sleep through the night; that can or cannot mean sleep training, but it does mean that you, the adult, are extremely exhausted until your child knows how to sleep successfully through the night. Here's the kicker though: at a certain point no one in your house should be waking up in the middle of the night. The goal is not only to have your child sleep through the night but also for YOU to get some well deserved rest. Sleep does not discriminate; every single human being needs and deserves sleep, it's just how you get to that point that is up to you. Now go get some sleep, mom and dad!

This week's episode finds Kaila talking with one of her closest friends, Andrea, an attorney and entrepreneur. We are Marie Kondo-ing our self-care, y'all; and that includes the use of the word "self-care". Parent or non-parent, taking care of your mental and emotional wellbeing is hard stuff. First you have to find the time do something you actually enjoy that isn't work, then you have to figure out what it is you exactly like to do again (you know, for FUN. Remember fun?), and then lastly you have to post about it on social media so everyone can know how much you care about self-care right?! Wrong, so wrong. This episode tackles all of that and then some; because while self-care may only be touted as sheet masks and massages lately, it's actually much simpler (and cheaper) than that.

Mom groups. They are totally a life changing experience for parents, involving hilarious group texts, potluck lunches in the park, and instant BFFs. Right? Not always. Sure, parent groups are an amazing resource for community and parental bonding, but unfortunately you're not assigned a village as you shuffle out of the hospital and make your way home with a brand new family member. Instead, new parenting is often isolating, lonely, and hard, especially when you feel like you don't have a solid group you can count on to be there for you in times of (parental) need. This week's guest, Nicole, is trying to change that; Kaila talks with this mom group creator about the importance of having a village for yourself, your partner, and your child as well as the need to recognize and normalize getting the support you deserve.
