  • Babysode: The Benefits Of Massaging Your Baby

It's been a while since the last Babysode (that's just what we call a shorter, mini episode around here, for what we think are obvious reasons) but it's back and with a super relevant topic that new babes and parents will really enjoy.

Kaila sat down with Helen Thompson, an Australian podcaster but also a baby massage instructor. During their talk, Kaila and Helen discuss how amazing baby massage can be for your little one's digestive system, relaxation, and sleep but also why both parents can stand to gain insight and peace from massaging their baby as well. Our skin is our bodies' largest organ and connecting with your child through touch creates a safe and healthy bond while also reminding us of the importance of slowing down, listening to our bodies, and seeing what they can teach us.

Check out Helen's podcast, First Time Mums Chat (and see if you can find the episode with Kaila as a guest!

    A bit more about Helen:
Helen has spent more than three decades working with babies and toddlers and currently lives on the beautiful North West coast of Tasmania, in Australia. She qualified in the United Kingdom as a nursery nurse/childcare educator and has worked in centres in the UK and numerous states of Australia.

Helen has always been a huge fan of holistic remedies and how they can help all ages and has spent time over the years training in areas including kinesiology and brain gym. In 2010, Helen heard about baby/infant massage for the first time and decided to train to become an instructor after seeing how it helps build a magical bond between baby and parent whilst helping babies  with conditions such as colic and constipation. Helen enjoys teaching mums via her online Zoom workshops.

Helen commenced her First Time Mum's Chat podcast in early 2021 and enjoys providing mums with tips to help them in their new parenting journey. She regularly interviews mums who share their journeys and challenges as well as experts in related areas that can help.

In her spare time Helen enjoys reading and the great outdoors via cycling and walking. She also enjoys getting away from technology and exploring the many delights of Tasmania.

  • Over The River, Through The Woods, And Still So Far From Grandma's

This week on Parent Tell, Kaila tackles how isolating it can feel when you become a parent but live far from your best and most supportive friends and family members. Speaking with fellow military spouse, Leslie, the two moms discuss how FOMO can hit pretty hard when you see other friends reaping the benefits of living down the street from family (hello, free babysitting) and friends (hello, bonus aunts and uncles to dote on the kiddies and support you at the same time). Whether military affiliated or not, living far away from the ones you want to surround you and your kids can be really tough. But for Kaila and Leslie this does not change their confidence in their choices to live far from home, it just means there are more logistics involved when it comes to getting help and also maintaining the relationships that matter the most to them and the relationships they want their children to have.

  • What It's Like Being A Paraplegic Parent

This week on Parent Tell, Kaila had the privilege of talking with Marjorie Aunos, a single mother by choice who became wheelchair bound only 16 months after the birth of her son. Majorie and Kaila have an open and honest discussion about what it was like to become a paraplegic parent, need unanticipated and sometimes unwanted help from her own parents, and how frustrating it can be to live and parent in a world that is rarely adapted to anyone except those with the ability to walk. Parenting looks different for everyone but especially for those who are born or become differently abled. We must be willing to support and advocate for all parenting experiences, for an inclusive parenting community will result in a new generation of accepting children who grow up to be accepting adults. Parenting and telling about it.

Marjorie Aunos, Ph.D. (Roll Fwd) is a psychologist, inspirational speaker, author and researcher from Montreal, Canada. Her expertise is working with parents who have intellectual disabilities. In 2012, she sustained a Spinal Cord Injury in a car accident. Mother to a 16 month old at the time, the accident and subsequent injury gave her an interesting perspective on parenting and disability. Marjorie believes that focusing on our strengths of character can lead to living a fulfilling life. With her family she learned to be a solution-finder to make her world more accessible. Her memoir, Mom on Wheels; The Power of Purpose for a Parent with Paraplegia is available for purchase starting May 31, 2022. You can follow her, and listen to her inspirational speeches on her social media accounts, and on www.speakerslam.org .

  • Real Talk With A Peds Doc

Being a new parent can be overwhelming, confusing, and exhausting.

Oh yeah and obviously wonderful, definitely wonderful to stare at that sweet baby angel face.

Anyway, back to the overwhelming and confusing bits. This week Kaila had the opportunity to talk with Pediatrician and mom, Dr. Elham Raker, about some of the most common issues new parents encounter and often come into her office wanting to discuss. Parenting in the time of Dr. Google and the Mom-fluencer can lead to information overload so Kaila decided it was time to speak with an expert. Dr. El and Kaila (okay mostly the pediatrician, hello) put on their myth busting hats and dove into topics such as spoiling a baby, breastfeeding, and more. Knowing the correct information as a new parent can relieve some of the "Am I doing this right??" Stress while also building your parental confidence and instincts.

  • The Roller Coaster That Is Sex After Baby

This week is about sex (bayybee)! Kaila talks with sex, intimacy, and relationship coach Azaria Menezes about how a couple's bedroom relationship tends to down shift once a baby comes home to stay. Sure, you most likely had sex to make that precious baby a reality, but now you're telling me that we are supposed to feel intimate...again? With this new postpartum body I barely recognize and sure as hell don't feel comfortable in yet? With a temporarily napping baby who could wake up and ruin the mood any second? Not to mention the fact that most parents are touched out, burnt out, and just plain tired so any type of intimacy tends to fall to the very bottom of the To Do List. Pun very much intended.
While breaking down the facts about what it means to be a parent and also a human being who wants to get down with the get down occasionally, Azaria highlights the importance of honoring your body's wants and needs, whatever they may be, while getting creative with what it means to be intimate with your partner. Because yes, since you've become a parent you are short on time, patience, energy, you name it. But that doesn't mean that your love life should suck.
    Parenting and telling about it.

  • Cannabis & Parenting: Talking with The Mommy Jane

This week on the podcast Kaila talks with Jess, a cannabis user and a mom. A CannaMom, if you will. Jess shares how using cannabis has helped her mental health but also has positively impacted her parenting and how present she is in the moment. While Wine Mommy culture is far more accepted than cannabis in the parenting world Kaila and Jess ponder why exactly that is, the negative (and straight up rude) interactions Jess has been on the receiving end of as a cannabis mom, and the privilege that automatically comes with consuming cannabis when you are white.

  • She's A Workin' Mom

This week Kaila talks with Kiran Gaind, a parent, life, and leadership coach. Kiran teaches parents, schools, and organizations the mindsets, communication skills, and behavior that create cultures of inclusion, resilience, and thriving in our uncertain, ever changing world. She's also a busy working mom who practices what she preaches! While highlighting the need for the workplace culture and family members to support and encourage working moms, Kiran discusses why working parents should embrace their professional goals as well as how to remain connected to their children and family life in a world that seems to be constantly telling parents, but especially moms, that they can either work or be a parent, but never both.

  • Postpartum Hair Loss Sucks

Holy hair loss, Batman! Or Robin, as that is literally Kaila's son's name. As if postpartum and the fourth trimester weren't hard enough already, your hair also falls out after giving birth?! Kaila, post-postpartum hair loss and current mayor of Postpartum Hair Regrowth-ville (a whole separate mindf*ck of its own) talks with Kirstin, a 5 months postpartum mom who is smack dab in the middle of her postpartum hair loss experience, about how strange (and terrifying) it is to witness the death of your pregnancy hair one shower at a time. The two parents talk hairlines, the vulnerability involved with shedding something so visible to others, as well as trying to feel comfortable with yet another physical appearance shift that comes with the transition into matrescence. Just parenting and telling you about it.

  • Loving The Body That Built The Baby

Trigger Warning: Discussions on body image

This week Kaila talks with Vanessa Gorelkin, an Occupational Therapist whose specialties include mental health and mindfulness, about the struggle that can be accepting your body in general, but especially after having a baby. Gentle reminder: you grew and birthed an entire human being-- your body absolutely should feel and look different! There is no hard and fast rule that says our bodies are supposed to look the same forever, but even knowing that does not make it easier to love and accept the physical changes that our bodies go through during the course of our life. Vanessa talks with Kaila about using mindfulness and radical acceptance in order to process feelings, thoughts, and emotions towards that beautiful powerhouse of a body that built a baby.
