Many people are interested in treatments that have a significant positive impact on appearance without a big investment in recovery time or money.
Dr. Munique Maia joins Dr. Bass for a deep dive into the most powerful minimally invasive treatments and minor surgeries, and reveals which small aging changes can make a huge difference in appearance when addressed.
Everyone has a busy schedule and a budget, and it's a good idea to think about what procedures will truly make a difference. Drs. Bass and Maia put their heads together to come up with a short list. Dr. Maia candidly advises that a treatment plan will usually consist of multiple modalities: skin care, filler, lasers, and surgery.

With any surgery, it's normal to be concerned about the scars you'll be left with and whether they heal properly. In this episode, Dr. Bass covers the different types of scars and what to do if you find yourself with an unpredictable scar during your recovery.
Two conditions which sometimes occur with scar healing are hypertrophic scars and keloid scars. A hypertrophic scar is red and thick, caused by inflammation combined with your wound healing biology and how your skin behaves. Keloid scars are the result of specific genes, growing thick, raised, and wider than the original incision or wound.
With scar issues of redness and thickening, the scar will be targeted through gel bandages, compression therapy, or lasers and energy based devices. Fractional lasers have revolutionized the treatment of scars, both traumatic and surgical. For widened scars, surgical revision is typically needed, trimming out the old scar and resewing the skin edges no sooner than 6 months after surgery.
Good scars start with good surgeries. Be cautious that you're teaming up with a surgeon who knows how to place incisions well and treat problem scars if you're one of the rare people whose skin reacts differently.

To bring us into the future of stem cells in aesthetics, regenerative medicine pioneer Dr. Steve Cohen joins Dr. Bass for a conversation about the future of this innovative area of medicine.
Because stem cells are not fully differentiated, they have the ability to turn into a muscle cell, a skin cell, or a blood vessel lining cell. This versatility allows them to be used in plastic surgery, where benefits include improving blood supply, making new blood supply, reducing inflammation, and repairing tissue, to name a few.
In the future, stem cells might be used for such applications as rehabilitating the tissue during breast reconstruction before putting a breast implant in, healing or reversing radiated tissue in head and neck cancer patients, or in combination with laser treatments for the best possible skin resurfacing results.
Dr. Cohen and Dr. Bass share how stem cells can be incorporated today to get ideal results and how they might help reduce the complexity of procedures and increase longevity of results in the future.

Once an unknown niche procedure, buccal fat pad removal is now everywhere in the media. Buccal fat pad removal surgery allows us to flatten the cheeks of somebody who has "chipmunk cheeks," reducing the bulge below the cheek mound to be relatively flat or just slightly concave.
Mostly for young adults, this surgery can be a powerful tool for facial shaping when the right amount of fat is removed. But if too much fat is removed or the patient does not have enough fat to begin with, it can result in an unnatural look.
As you get older, all facial fat pads, including the buccal fat pads, lose volume and we don't want to "burn our bridges" for your future appearance, we want to look good both now and later.
Learn the reality of what buccal fat pads are, how they are removed, and the good and bad sides of how removing them might affect your appearance.

Because both plastic surgeons and patients are perfectionists by temperament, it's a good meeting when they get together. But as humans, we have to accept that we're never going to achieve perfection.
If we are too demanding toward ourselves and others, it can be hard to find satisfaction with cosmetic procedures. For some people, cognitive therapy and mindfulness is helpful for setting more realistic ideals.
For anyone mentally preparing or recovering from a cosmetic procedure, special guest Dr. Alan Goodwin joins Dr. Bass to explore the psychological impact of plastic surgery.
About Dr. Alan Goodwin
Dr. Alan Goodwin is a licensed psychologist and has been providing psychotherapy and coaching in his private office in Encino, California, since 2003. He published a self-help book titled, "Saving Face Without Losing Your Mind: Bringing Mindfulness to Your Cosmetic Procedure" in November 2022 to psychologically help people prepare for or recover from cosmetic procedures.

In aesthetic medicine, photography is central to the consultation, treatment planning, execution of the treatment, and the assessment of the results. Photography expert Doug Canfield, founder of Canfield Scientific, returns to the podcast to talk with Dr. Bass about the latest advances in clinical photography including how artificial intelligence is aiding imaging and diagnosis.
Without photographic documentation, plastic surgeons aren't able to prove their abilities to prospective patients, current patients aren't able to have confidence in the procedure they had, and prospective patients aren't able to use past patient results as examples of their goals.
Real advancements in imaging software allow practices to take consistent, high quality before and after pictures and today, there are both 2D and 3D simulations which realistically show patients what is possible and appropriate.
When you use these technologies to show patients how their appearance can change with various interventions, plastic surgeons and patients can both walk into surgery with the exact same mental picture of the end result.

To help you find the best laser or energy treatment for your goals, dermatologist Joel L. Cohen, MD, joins Dr. Bass for a conversation about the devices which have changed the aesthetics game and how treatments can be modulated to fit your goals.
Finding the right device means first consulting with and building a relationship with an expert dermatologist or plastic surgeon, who will help you select the treatment that will best address your concerns.
Getting to your goals requires an entire toolbox, not a singular device. If you already have lines etched in the skin, Dysport or Botox won't help. Neuromodulators are for prevention, not rejuvenation, and you need laser resurfacing to remove them.
Mild improvements in fine lines can be obtained with the new superficial fillers, but when lines are deep and etched, slight improvement is made with chemical peels and more significant improvement is made with laser peels (laser resurfacing). What you choose depends on where you are in the aging spectrum and how much downtime you are able or willing to take.

Needles are everywhere in medical aesthetics, from injectable treatments to needling treatments that use tiny sterile needles to create tiny punctures and energy based microneedling.
Creating a lot of punctures in the skin is microtrauma that the body recognizes and responds to biologically, creating biostimulatory effects such as neocollagenesis, the formation of new collagen in the skin, and neovascularization, the formation of new blood supply in the skin.
Some needles are big, some are tiny – but no matter how "minimally invasive" the treatment sounds, it's important to know the details, see someone who is experienced with these treatments and devices, and be sure it fits with your desires and lifestyle.
Dr. Bass shares everything you need to know about minimally invasive needle treatments, including the different types of devices, what each treatment targets, how to prevent bruising, and what's required to get a meaningful result.
