Welcome to Part III of the fifth sector of our mega-series: Am I Always Going to Be Alone? Finding Your Fairytale from our ME³! podcast.
Brandi starts off with her story of the relationship she got into right after she got away from her captor. The haste of getting into a new relationship so soon and putting up with certain behaviors from the beginning was already a typical set-up of settling. Her story illustrates the kind of treatment that we should never settle for in a relationship and how we should stand up for ourselves and get away from it. Brandi reveals the reasons for why she was settling to get into that second-rate relationship in the first place, a large part of it being loneliness. We have found that loneliness and the fear of being alone are usually the primary reasons for settling with relationships somewhere on the spectrum between mediocre and terrible. And sometimes when we've been through terrible relationships, there is a danger of causing us to lower our standards where all that it takes for us to think someone is relationship-material is for them to be less terrible than the previous person we had in our life.

Welcome to Part II of the fifth sector of our mega-series: Am I Always Going to Be Alone? Finding Your Fairytale from our ME³! podcast.
In this segment we go straight into the problems we see from personal experience, when teens get into romantic relationships. We explain how being unprepared and not mature enough for a real, forever-kind-of-relationship results in a lot of damage especially when things become sexual. It is so much better to spend our younger years building friendships and growing up into a person that can have a good, strong relationship with the person who we can be soulmates with for life. Continuing forward, we expose some of the red flags or signs of settling in a relationship such as: having to make excuses and be really defensive about your relationship to others, or if you're with someone who isolates you from your family and good friends (assuming that they are all actually wholesome and not toxic relationships). We also talk about how settling lowers your defenses and makes you more susceptible to manipulators and dangerous situations. When you let your standards sink too low, you don't realize how that compromise shuts down your intuition.

Welcome to Part I of the fifth sector of our mega-series: Am I Always Going to Be Alone? Finding Your Fairytale from our ME³! podcast.
We start by explaining that settling for less than the best for our life is sometimes due to ignorance rather than knowingly choosing an inferior option. We break down some of the most common reasons for settling including: loneliness, desperation, low self esteem, and cynicism or lack of hope. We cover the fact that a sweeping issue at the root of our choices to settle is that we do not value ourselves highly enough. By settling for less because we're desperate, we can open ourselves to people who only want to take advantage of us. This is just as true for men as it is for women. Settling has many levels and is why we put up with consistently bad behaviors and negative circumstances. We also talk about what may be the very worst thing about settling: it keeps us from ever getting to have our best life and leaves us with a lot regrets. Although loneliness can be extremely painful, allowing toxic people close to us will squeeze out good people and prevent the possibility of having connection with them. But there is always hope!

Welcome to Part III of the fourth sector of our mega-series: Am I Always Going to Be Alone? Finding Your Fairytale from our ME³! podcast.
Continuing where we left off, we talk about the danger of acting in denial of our relationships and commitments and the consequences of breaching them. Another form of denial is trying to force a relationship to work that is simply dysfunctional and not good or what is really meant for us. Shawn finishes his story of how he emerged out of his denial, which actually began when he met Brandi and started spending time with her. Ultimately, it was a Divine intervention that for the sake of love, Shawn was able to face all that had gone wrong in his life and work his way past the denial. You can never make your own peace by denying the truth. You can only find real peace by confronting the truth face to face and stepping into what real love is. Getting a hold of love and truth together is what sets us free from denial and all other forms of wounds, brokenness and captivity.

Welcome to Part II of the fourth sector of our mega-series: Am I Always Going to Be Alone? Finding Your Fairytale from our ME³! podcast.
At the beginning Brandi points out what she learned from her own story: that the beliefs we hold as truth can be very easily destroyed when we open ourselves up to a manipulator and we don't have a strong relationship with God at the foundation of our faith. Another major issue we deal with is how we can be in denial about relationships thinking that we can keep people at arm's length "safely" away from our hearts. We must be honest about our connections and about our need for relationship as human beings. Further defining denial, we point out how it is a defense mechanism which is really a way of trying to control reality by our own perspective. It never truly succeeds. Another point Shawn makes is that we believe false things because we want the ease or seeming safety or gratification those things offer even if there are signs that the truth may not at all agree with our preferences. Brandi also points out before we can know what true love is, we need to be ready to learn first and be healed and corrected from our wrong impressions.

Welcome to Part I of the fourth sector of our mega-series: Am I Always Going to Be Alone? Finding Your Fairytale from our ME³! podcast.
We begin this episode with Shawn's story of his first relationship with a girl — the wrong one as it turned out — and how he went into a deadly spiral of denial because of it. He was so taken in by the experience of romance that he was unwilling to see the problems with her and began excusing very wrong behavior. After it all blew up in his face, he actually went deeper into denial though in a different direction. He explains what that looked like at that time in his life as he was in denial about needing to deal with his heartbreak in a healthy way emotionally and spiritually. His denial made him believe that he could be completely self sufficient and use will-power himself to function like a machine according to his own will. This all resulted in major disconnection from God, his family, and his own self. The weakness that allowed this collapse into denial is revealed to be the reliance upon a transactional love instead of living in unconditional love. Shawn points out that a primary cause of mental illness is actually denial.

Welcome to Part V of the third sector of our mega-series: Am I Always Going to Be Alone? Finding Your Fairytale from our ME³! podcast.
Here we conclude the story of how we came back together after Brandi broke away from her captor. We talk about the importance of how our relationship was built on reinforcing each other in our identity and helping each other by challenging each other in a positive way to overcome insecurity and self-doubt. Brandi points out the importance of cutting ties completely with people who do the opposite, attacking us with their toxicity in their attempts to overturn our confidence and sense of self. Those who try to tear you down are trying to get control of your mind. She shares how it is very important that we hold off from getting involved with someone romantically when we aren't stable in ourselves and still are under the ill effects of having our confidence and self-image beaten down. Finally, we share on the importance of hope: you can come our of your insecurities and you don't have to stay forever in self-doubt! Someone is out there for you who will affirm you if you will open your heart to the good and say no to the toxic and evil.

Welcome to Part IV of the third sector of our mega-series: Am I Always Going to Be Alone? Finding Your Fairytale from our ME³! podcast.
We continue from the last episode deeper into the story of how we stayed in touch despite the fallout that we had while Brandi was still under the power of her captor. We share about how we both felt post collapse and the self-doubt Shawn fell into afterward as well as the recovery he had to make from it. Ultimately, the truth and affirmations that Shawn spoke into Brandi's life was in a continuous war in her mind against her captor's lies. Brandi continues sharing how the process of the truth coming into her life opened her eyes and eventually led to her freedom as she fought to make new choices and break away from the lies and control and feeling scared and dependent. We proceed on into how we came back together after it all. We finish with analyzing how Shawn had to sort out his feelings after having come to doubt all of his beliefs in Brandi from the break up and then afterward being faced with the "new" version of her which proved his original faith correct and made him see how his self doubt misguided him.

Welcome to Part III of the third sector of our mega-series: Am I Always Going to Be Alone? Finding Your Fairytale from our ME³! podcast.
We start right where we left off in part 2 in which Brandi had just finished talking about her abduction. We continue further on that thread about how victimizers take advantage of insecurity and self doubt. It makes a person easier to shape into whatever the victimizer wants them to become. We point out how relying on others for stability in your identity and for decision-making is a huge opening to exploitation. It's important that you surround yourself with people that help reinforce you in your sense of self and personal power. We further discuss another side of self doubt: what it's like having to recover from bad things that happen to you from having insecurity in the first place. The good news is that with dedicated effort and a little help in rebuilding a person's self image, it is fully possible to overcome the blows to self-confidence and gain better decisiveness.
