    1. Car Break ins

Paulding County sheriff's investigators are searching for thieves who stole high-value items from unlocked vehicles in the Seven Hills community. The thieves targeted multiple neighborhoods, looking for guns and valuable items. A perimeter was set up, and deputies spotted the two men wearing masks and black clothing, but they escaped into the woods. Most of the vehicles were unlocked, and authorities urge residents to remove valuables and lock their vehicles for safety. Several stolen items, including a gun, have been recovered. This from Fox 5

    2. PCSO Facebook Page

A couple days ago Paulding E-911 received a shooting report at Wellstar Paulding Hospital, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and Wellstar Security. The campus was locked down and searched, but it was later confirmed to be a hoax call, and no shooting occurred. The authorities express gratitude for the prompt response. #PauldingSheriff #HiramPolice #GSP #WellstarPaulding..…..this from the Dallas New Era

    4. Lt. Gov Frustration

Election security remains a contentious issue in Georgia, with concerns raised over vulnerabilities in the state's voting system. Lt. Governor Burt Jones and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, both Republicans, met to discuss a report on election security, but differences in approach have caused frustration. Raffensperger called for support of his "Secure the Vote Plan" to enhance accountability and accuracy in elections. Georgia's elections have faced criticism from various groups, with the state's election law, Senate Bill 202, being a particular target of scrutiny. The issue is expected to be a prominent topic when lawmakers return in January…..courtesy of the Center Square

    5. Hunting

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division has released the 2023-2024 Georgia Hunting Seasons and Regulations Guide. It provides details on season dates, bag limits, licenses, WMAs, youth opportunities, and more. The guide is available online and on the Go Outdoors GA app, and printed copies can be obtained from division offices and license vendors. Notable changes include mandatory bear harvest reporting and extended archery deer season in specific counties. For further information, visit GeorgiaWildlife.com/hunting/hunter-resources or contact a local Wildlife Resources Division office.

    6. Man with criminal history hired by metro commissioner for community engagement role

A man with a criminal history, including impersonating a police officer and robbery by force, was hired as a community engagement manager by Fulton County Commissioner Natalie Hall. Jonathan Harris pleaded guilty to these crimes and spent time in prison before being hired. The hiring process for commissioners allows them to hire anyone they want without a salary cap, and applicants must undergo a background check. Some of Harris's victims and community members question why he was hired despite his criminal record.

Code compliance officer Jimmy Vowell was watching too much bounty hunter shows when he broke into a woman's house to serve her a ticket for her overgrown lawn. The homeowner, Erica Masters, caught the whole incident on tape. The officer broke into Master's home one early morning, and went into her room to demand that she sign the ticket. When she called 911, she was forwarded to the officer's supervisor, and he was fired from his job. However, he was not arrested for breaking and entering her home.

        1. kemp
        2. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court case of Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, seeking to overturn the Chevron deference established in 1984. The Chevron deference gives federal agencies the power to interpret statutes, and critics argue it has led to regulatory instability and an excessive concentration of power in unelected bureaucrats. Kemp argues that overturning Chevron is essential to cut burdensome regulations and ensure that Georgia's policies reflect the will of its citizens rather than federal agency dictates. The case originated from a lawsuit filed by Loper Bright Enterprises in 2020 over monitoring regulations for Atlantic herring fishermen.

          4.*          Golfers

The golf season continues with various high-level events after the recent British Open. The PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs are scheduled for August, followed by the Ryder Cup in September, and the LIV Golf Tour will conclude in October. Golf's popularity has grown in recent years, with more people taking up the sport during the COVID-19 pandemic. The emergence of the LIV Golf Tour, backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, attracted top players and increased fan engagement. The recent merger between the PGA, LIV, and the European Tour has created a unified organization with a global reach. Golf's top players come from diverse countries, with more than half of PGA Tour cut-makers hailing from outside the United States, showcasing the sport's global appeal.

28 Georgia-born golfers have made at least one cut at a PGA Tour event in the last decade. Among all 50 states and Washington, DC, Georgia produces the 4th most pro golfers.

          1. Hospitality
          2. Travel and tourism in Georgia contributed over $60 billion to the state's economy in 2021, making it the second-largest industry after agriculture. HFIM was ranked fourth in the U.S. among all private and public universities for hospitality and tourism management degrees. The program has experienced significant growth since its inception in 2019 and has formed partnerships with various departments within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to enhance its offerings. Future goals include further expansion, research focus, and industry collaborations.

            1. medicaid
Georgia state officials have removed over 95,000 people from the Medicaid rolls, with 89,168 losing coverage due to a
lack of information for eligibility determination. The move is seen by one Georgia group as a return to the original
administration of the program, where eligibility had to be proven to receive benefits. The Families First Coronavirus
Response Act required continuous enrollment through the COVID-19 pandemic, but now the state is conducting
eligibility reviews for all 2.7 million Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids recipients. The goal is to ensure that only eligible
individuals remain on the program, with the process initiated in June affecting both terminations and renewals. The
state aims to avoid removing eligible individuals due to bureaucratic paperwork issues.………this from the Center Square
            2. nuclear
Georgia Power announced that a new nuclear reactor at Plant Vogtle is nearing full operation, but the utility faces
scrutiny over the project's rising costs due to delays. Southern Nuclear, the facility operator, submitted the required
inspections and tests for regulatory approval to ensure safety standards are met. Unit 3 recently became operational
after delays, and Unit 4 is expected to be completed by fall 2024. The project started in 2005, faced delays and increased
costs, and is now estimated to cost over $35 billion. Critics worry about the financial burden on ratepayers, while
Georgia Power sees it as essential for providing clean and reliable energy.…..this from Georgiarecorder.com
            3. head
Valdosta State University graduate Donovan Head has been appointed as the executive director of the Charter Schools
Commission of Georgia. The appointment was made by Governor Brian Kemp and approved by the Board of
Commissioners. Head, who currently serves as deputy director of the Governor's Office of Student Achievement, will
assume his new role on August 1. His appointment was the result of a nationwide search, and he was chosen for his
leadership skills and dedication to Georgia's students. Head has prior experience as a senior Congressional staffer and
played a role in Kemp's 2018 campaign....….this from the Albany Herald

Corporal Kevin Dutton was named the Employee of the Month for July 2023 by the Paulding County Board of
Commissioners. The award was presented at a surprise ceremony held at the Sheriff's office Training Center. Dutton,
who is a Georgia P.O.S.T. Certified Instructor, was recognized for his hard work and dedication in leading the
implementation of the new Taser 7 conducted energy weapon program. He has been with the Sheriff's Office for nearly
14 years and is a valued member of the training division. Sheriff Gary Gulledge praised Dutton's exemplary performance

Ples C. Davis (East Paulding High School) was among 51 career and technical, and agricultural education (CTAE)
educators who were honored by the Georgia Association for Career & Technical Education (GACTE) during its 76th
Summer Conference which met June 14-16, 2023, at the Classic Center in Athens, Georgia. The conference was attended
by over 1700 CTAE educators from around the state. Mr. Davis was named the 2023 Georgia ACTE Carl Perkins
Community Service Award recipient. This award recognizes individuals who have used CTE to make a significant impact
on their community and demonstrated leadership in the programs and activities that promote student involvement in
community service. He will represent Georgia at the Association for Career & Technical Education Region II competition
in October 2024. In addition, the winner will receive a $500 stipend to assist with conference travel. Mr. Davis will also

            6. Veteran Population
The debt ceiling deal reached between the Biden administration and Republicans will allocate $121 billion for veteran
medical funding in fiscal year 2024. Additionally, the deal includes $20 billion in compensation funding for American
troops affected by exposure to toxic burn pit sites in Iraq and other locations. This funding is crucial as veterans face
higher risks of mental health disorders, substance abuse, homelessness, and suicide compared to civilians. There are
currently 16.5 million military veterans in the US, with Georgia having 7.3% of its civilian population aged 18 and older
having served in the military, the 25th smallest share among states. The data is sourced from the 2021 American
Community Survey by the US Census Bureau.……this from the Center Square

            2. judge

A federal judge rejected Georgia's motion for summary judgment in a lawsuit challenging state House and Senate district lines. The ACLU, ACLU of Georgia, and WilmerHale law firm filed the lawsuit, claiming the state violated the Voting Rights Act by not creating enough Black-majority districts despite the Black population's growth. The trial is scheduled for September 5. U.S. District Judge Steve Jones stated that there are significant factual disputes and credibility determinations that warrant a thorough review at trial. The lawsuit contends that Georgia's state legislative maps unfairly diminish the voting power of Black voters. The ACLU sees the judge's decision as a victory and aims to prove their case during the trial…..this from the Center Square

The state did not provide any discretionary incentives

for the project, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development. 5. inflation

Despite positive job and unemployment news, inflation remains a significant concern for many Georgia businesses. A WalletHub analysis found that the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell Metropolitan Statistical Area has experienced the second-highest increase in inflation nationwide, registering a 4.60% rise compared to last year. While the national inflation is being reduced slowly by Federal Reserve rate hikes, the Atlanta area is still affected by rising prices, particularly in housing and energy costs. Small business optimism increased slightly, but inflation and labor quality remain major challenges. State and local leaders have limited control over inflation, as it is mainly influenced by national economic factors and Federal Reserve policies. This from 11alive.com

Tens of thousands of Georgians at risk of losing food assistance under state’s new work rules

Since July 1, more than 87,000 Georgian adults without children must work at least 80 hours a month to receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services declined to request a federal work exemption, potentially putting many at risk of losing food assistance. Advocates argue that mandatory work hours may not be a reliable incentive, and Georgia previously sought waivers during the Great Recession for areas with limited job opportunities. The state's current unemployment rate is below the national average, and supporters of the work requirement believe it encourages self-sufficiency. The goal is to help recipients find employment and reduce reliance on public assistance……courtesy of newsbreak    #losingfoodassistance #newworkrules #tensofthousandsofgeorgians #stateofgeorgia #Supplementalnutritionassistanceprogram #snap #geoegiadivisionoffamilyandchildrenservices #unemploymentrate #statesunemploymentrate #self-sufficiency #georgiaresidentsneedhelp #newsbreak

          6. Georgia Republicans welcome state Rep. Mainor’s switch from Dems as new life of the party

Edition 2 of the brand new Paulding County News Podcast. We visit with Paulding County Tourism Director from the Paulding County Chamber, tell you about some upcoming events to get you out, and cover these news stories.

            1. Mainor
Controversial Democratic state Representative Mesha Mainor of Atlanta announced her decision to switch parties and join the
Republican Party. Mainor, who previously supported a failed school voucher policy and appeared on conservative television
criticizing Democrats, cited disagreements over bills and allegations of slander and hostility as reasons for her switch. She claims
to be the first Black woman Republican serving in the state Legislature and plans to run for re-election in a district that heavily
favored Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Mainor's move was celebrated by prominent Republicans, but she
may face challenges due to unified Democratic opposition, deviations from the party line on voting rights, and her district's
              voting history.
              2. School Choice
State Representative Mesha Mainor of Atlanta's switch from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party has sparked discussions
about the potential impact on school choice in Georgia. Mainor had previously voted in favor of the Georgia Promise Scholarship
Act, a measure supporting state-funded education savings accounts, which faced opposition from members of both parties.
Supporters of school choice believe that Mainor's move reflects a growing national movement in favor of educational opportunity.
The Georgia Center for Opportunity praised her decision, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the best interests of
constituents, particularly those in disadvantaged areas. The Democratic Party of Georgia criticized Mainor's switch, expressing the
desire to elect a representative who will fight for high-quality public education. The Georgia Republican Party welcomed Mainor,
stating their commitment to empowering parents and providing economic opportunities.
              3. Cameras at gas stations
The Public Safety and Legal Administration Committee of the Atlanta City Council has approved a measure that would require
gas stations to have surveillance cameras. The proposal aims to enhance public safety and deter criminal activities such as car
thefts and violence at gas stations. The measure, which also applies to convenience stores connected to gas stations, is similar
to one implemented in DeKalb County. The full city council will consider the measure at its August 7 meeting. Council member
Keisha Sean Waites believes that surveillance cameras will create a safer environment for customers and employees, allowing
for better monitoring of operations and identification of problem areas. The measure mandates the installation of continuous
video recording systems at each fuel pump, with backup systems in case of malfunctions.
            2. Georgia Safari Park

The Georgia Safari Conservation Park is scheduled to have a tentative Phase One opening in early 2024. The park, located
on a 530-acre site off Monticello Highway near Interstate 20, is currently working on road construction and lodging
accommodations, including a giraffe and rhino barn with a private suite. The park will feature animal enclosures and
luxurious safari tents for lodging. The opening was delayed due to COVID-related supply chain issues, but the project is now
progressing with conventional bank loans and private investments. The park aims to provide educational and conservation-
focused animal encounters, with initial species including zebras, ostriches, and antelope. The park has partnered with
renowned zoological consultant Rick Barongi, and upon opening, it expects around 200 visitors per day. Pricing details have
              yet to be released.
              5. reforms
Congressional Republicans, including U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk, introduced the American Confidence in Elections Act, a
proposed election reform bill modeled after Georgia's controversial legislation from two years ago. The bill aims to tighten
voter ID requirements, prohibit non-U.S. citizens from voting, and end private funding of election administration.
Republicans framed their bill as a conservative approach to election integrity and criticized the Democrats John R. Lewis
Voting Rights Advancement Act as a federal takeover of voting. The Republican bill would incentivize states to adopt the
proposed reforms and potentially withhold federal funds for non-compliance. Democrats argued against the GOP bill,
stating that there was no widespread voter fraud in Georgia and criticizing the previous election reform measure for its
limitations on drop boxes and challenges to voters. The hearing coincided with the second anniversary of Major League
Baseball's decision to move the All-Star Game from Atlanta in response to the passage of Georgia's Senate Bill 202.

              Mastermind
Former Amazon warehouse manager Kayricka Wortham has been sentenced to 16 years in federal prison for defrauding the
company of nearly $10 million. Wortham and her co-conspirators submitted over $10 million in fictitious invoices for fake
vendors, leading Amazon to pay approximately $9.4 million. Wortham abused her managerial position to approve these
invoices and transfer the fraudulent proceeds to bank accounts controlled by her and her associates. Brittany Hudson, who
was in a relationship with Wortham, owned a business that contracted with Amazon and collaborated with Wortham in the
scheme. Other individuals involved in the fraud included Demetrius Hines, Laquettia Blanchard, and Jamar James Sr.
Wortham and Hudson also committed additional crimes, including forging court documents, while on bond. Restitution of
$9.4 million has been ordered, and forfeitures include $2.7 million in fraudulent proceeds, a residence, and several vehicles.
Criminal charges related to defrauding CRU Franchising Company and forging the signature of a federal judge remain
              pending against Wortham and Hudson.
              6. All star
Atlanta is being considered as a potential host for the 2025 All-Star Game, according to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. This comes
after the city lost the opportunity to host the 2021 game due to controversy surrounding Georgia's voting laws. Truist Park, is being
considered as a potential venue for the 2025 game. Other sites under consideration include Wrigley Field in Chicago and Fenway
Park in Boston. Atlanta has previously hosted the All-Star Game in 1972 and 2000. The 2022 game will be hosted by the Texas
Rangers, and the 2026 game will coincide with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in
Philadelphia. Atlanta previously hosted All-Star Games in 1972 and 2000.
