Hugh has a chat with the Emerald Bandit about her strange artifact and how it might connect to the Hunter; always the salesman, Hugh ends up making a deal with a higher power. Not long after, Dawn strikes out to make her own deal, as she interviews some of Biddle's personal demons in her quest to destroy the Ebon Gauntlet, the Empire, and the Thrice-Wise Magus for what they did to her and her doppelganger. After the events of Forge, the greatly diminished caravan makes their way to the small trading city of Thorn, just outside of Anvil; Biddle assures the adventurers that they can lay low in his home in the city and spend a relaxing couple of days out by the beach. Of course, things immediately go wrong, as Apolena's past comes back to haunt her in a major way. Thorn earns it's name, as things get much, much worse.

The investigators continue to search for the missing Flaming Pearl, as well as determine what James' larger plan was and who else was involved in it; it takes them to a shell company run by a Summer Court and to the streets, searching for answers and new questions.
