It started with a LinkedIn intro and a "here's my cell, call me anytime." Two hours later, Landon Anderson - a guy in Texas Jonathan had never met - called. Forty-five minutes later, Jonathan had gone from jumping up and down in excitement to hunched over in tears, all from a conversation about leadership, youth athletes, and why the metrics on a jobsite are the same as the ones on a sports team.

Learning to Skateboard with Dad

What happens when a 10-year-old becomes the coach... and her dad becomes the student?

In this episode, I head to the park with my daughter Cassandra, who convinces me to step on a skateboard for the first time in nearly 30 years. Spoiler: there are falls. There is grass. There is a lot of patience from a very small coach.

But here's the thing about trying something new in front of someone you love - it isn't just about you. When Cassandra saw me wobble, stumble, and eventually glide down that ramp, it gave her the courage to try the bigger one herself.

We talk about the fear of looking foolish, the value of being present, and why sometimes the best thing you can do is just show up and try. Plus a few thoughts on a memoir-in-progress about ego, trust, and the real cost of coaching minor hockey (working title: The Egoless Coach").

This one's about skateboarding, sure. But it's really about what happens when we let ourselves be beginners again.

Today we discuss psychological safety and the impact that is has on a construction death and the fact that in ten years the amount of construction deaths have not changed. 

People in the construction world are not seen, heard or understood and because of that they fail to bring up the things that keep them safe.

When workers don't feel safe to report a safety problem, that they did or didn't cause you are creating an environment where safety issues can escalate very quickly.

When you give a shit about the people doing the work, they will perform better and do things properly; so that we can all go home safe.

Create Psychological safety, so that every issue on your jobsite can be easily communicated.
