And in this week's Resell Me a Pen challenge, Barbie isn't the only returning fashionista...

  • Technology, AI, the metaverse... the future has two radically different possibilities – which side will you be on?

AI is not evil, so why do we project human characteristics onto it? This week's guest unravels the misconceptions of emergent tech in the marketing industry and addresses the non truths that flood the discussion around the future of tech and AI for brands and marketers.

Software engineer, turned lawyer, now CEO of MDRx, Tom Grogan is uniquely positioned to advise the biggest brands on tech strategy, real digital transformation and the future of brands' engagement with consumers. His clients range from luxury fashion like Selfridges to public sector tech solutions.

Tom explains why we have to be careful about the words we use when describing AI, the real threat that AI poses to jobs and gives his version of what the metaverse can really achieve. Plus, we talk about the biggest tech in the industry at the moment and discuss whether it's for good or a fad.

  • Is your business actually diverse? How to fix agencies' dysfunctional relationship with entry level marketers

Diversity as a topic comes up in most panels, events and was unmissable at Cannes. But what are agencies actually doing to challenge inequality when hiring new talent?

The UK is the one of the worst western economies for equal access to opportunities and this week's guests are on mission to change that.

Rob Jackson founded WYK; a digital marketing enterprise providing courses to underrepresented groups to help start their career in marketing. Rob is joined by a previous alumni Noel Goode who swapped his career in construction for performance marketing after taking the course, and now works at OMD UK on the McDonalds account.

This episode will explain what businesses can do to promote diversity when hiring new talent, what barriers still remain and what there's left to do.

  • Why are performance marketers even at Cannes Lions? With Snapchat, Jon Evans and Billion Dollar Boy

For a festival that boasts of creativity, why is the presence of adtech and performance marketers bigger than ever before?

In this extra bumper episode, we bring you three interviews: Snapchat, Jon Evans (host of the Uncensored CMO and CCO at System1) and Billion Dollar Boy.

[04:54] Snapchat's Fintan Gillespie explains why e-commerce is broken and how AR can bridge the phygital gap. Fintan explains the data behind Snap's 'My AI' – one of the largest generative AI chatbots in the world, lets us in on the biggest secrets in the creator economy, and answers the question: why should performance marketers be interested in Snapchat?

[21:35] Up next, previous podcast guest Jon Evans, joins PMW to explain the difference between what wins at Cannes and what performance best, and how they don't actually correlate. He reveals the secret to the highest scoring ad at System1 and why it's never seen at Cannes, how Aldi competes with John Lewis in the Christmas ad competition and why the definition of creativity is too narrow.

[44:56] The final interview, sits down the ex-Meta CMO of Billion Dollar Boy, Becky Owen, on the freedom after Meta, why 'influencer' is an outdated term and the love/hate relationship with the industry.

  • Cannes vs Machine: Samsung Ads' glass view of CTV and Kantar's favourite bad ad

"AI is more of an enabling tool right now than it is a replacement for genuine human creativity," said Kantar's EVP, Creative and Media Solutions, Steve Silvers. For a topic that crops up in almost every talk at Cannes this year, no one seems that impressed.

In the second part of PMW's Cannes Versus Machine three-part podcast series we unlock the technologies that have blown up in the last year and how performance marketers can use them. PMW's Editor, Robin Langford, and Lucy Shelley, Multimedia Editor, talk through their best bits, including the Grand Prix winner for the Creative Data Lions.

We begin with Samsung Ads 'glass level view' of CTV as Andy Jones, Head of UK Sales, debunks its misconceptions. Jones explains how automatic content recognition changes the game for marketers and why acronyms (BVOD, SVOD, FAST, etc...) are so overrated. As consumers quite simply don't care or identify the difference.

The next interview sits down with Kantar, delving into why generative AI is actually not a big deal or worth fussing about. We also ask the data analytics company what is their favourite bad ad that wouldn't win a Lion but might actually perform well!

The third and final episode of the Cannes vs Machine series will be out next week, with special guests from Snapchat, Billion Dollar Boy and Jon Evans from the Uncensored CMO. So follow along at www.performancemarketingworld.com !

  • News Short: why sustainability is more than just ethics for digital advertising, but an essential business strategy

The IAB reported that the digital advertising industry accounts for between 3.5-4% of global carbon emissions – almost twice that of the aviation industry.

It was this startling statistic that began PMW's investigation into how adland became such a significant polluter and most importantly uncovering why a sustainability mission is not only ethical, but solves a lot more for businesses than we think, with insight and analysis from experts into how organisations and advertisers can minimise their emissions.

This News Short goes into why PMW began the research, what was so surprising, and what needs to happen next.

Part 1 and 2 is available to read now, with Part 3 released later this week.

Part 1: Adland’s carbon conundrum: how performance marketers can prioritise sustainability without it costing the earth

Part 2: 'Cut the crap': how to turn ad sustainability intentions into successful ethical and business outcomes
