Both a deal on the debt limit and a Friday’s job report help spark a market rally; and the broad market Standard & Poor’s 500 index closed above 4200 -- breaking the key resistance level. Meanwhile, the NASDAQ is up for five straight weeks on an absolutely white-hot artificial intelligence boom.

A key thing here is that the computers that are needed to grind out AI algorithms and data have an enormous appetite for high-end computer chips.  The King of this hill is Nvidia (NVDA), which we noted last week was on an absolute tear.

One could argue – and the corporate media and RINO establishment will certainly do so – that Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s deal with President Joe Biden coupled with his ability to ram it through the House of Representatives on a bipartisan vote was a master legislative stroke in a sharply divided government.  Yet, there are three very real problems with this argument that may trigger a vote to oust him as Speaker under rules put in place by House conservatives precisely for such a betrayal.

Some politicians make history.  By caving so quickly to Joe Biden, Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has chosen to be a footnote.

Historians will mark McCarthy’s Memorial Weekend surrender not as an important, courageous, and prescient turning point but as just one more political misstep towards a prolonged war with  stagflation – simultaneous slow growth or recession plus inflation.

Last week, as Communist Chinese warships completed a coercive circumnavigation of Japan’s main islands, G-7 leaders met in Hiroshima to forge a unified response to China’s ever-increasing economic and military aggression.  The result – a weak communique without neither bite nor teeth -- was hardly Churchillian.

Hi.  Peter Navarro here and in this market rap for the week ending May 19, 2023, I want to talk a little about the art and craft of forecasting and how you as a Main Street Deplorable can look into the economic crystal ball with some accuracy with just a little more effort reading the financial news. 

But first, the numbers: US markets finished basically flat again for the week with little volatility as investors retreated to the sidelines awaiting news of a possible Congressional deal on the debt ceiling.

There is a move now afoot in the financial press to try and spin and spook the Republicans into caving to Biden.  We are being force-fed a trickle of warnings turning to a flood emanating from the Biden bureaucracy about how it will be a “catastrophe” and a sharp market sell-off if an agreement isn’t reached.

Memo to Sleepy Joe: The far bigger catastrophe will be if the Republicans don’t succeed in forcing you and your merry band of spendthrifts to significantly reduce spending and the forecasted budget deficit and debt.  That catastrophe will come in the form of continued stagflation – slow growth or recession and inflation.  So hold fast Speaker and Brother McCarthy.  Much is at stake, and MAGA has your back.
