In this interview, Nyx Melody shares a beginner friendly guide to all things related to gender and sexuality. Nyx explains what LGBTQIPA2S+ stands for? We discuss HIV/AIDS myths, how to be more affirming and what straight privilege looks like. Nyx also touches on why pronouns matter and the importance of pride. Lastly, Nyx answers what the terms, cis gender, queer and non-binary mean.
Nyx Melody, LMHC (legal name: Nicholas Moran) (pronouns: they/them/their and fae/faer/faers) is a queer, non-binary/trans femme and panromantic New York State psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, and anti-oppression/LGBTQIA+ consultant. Fae also teaches at NYU and Columbia University. They are passionate about working with individuals, couples, and groups who are struggling with various issues, including but not limited to: trauma/abuse, gender/sexual identity, anxiety, depression, substance use, acculturation, racial identity exploration, and dismantling internalized inferiority and/or superiority. Nyx graduated from the Point Park University with a bachelor's degree in Psychology where fae completed a research study regarding the ongoing coming out process for queer men. They completed a dual master's degree: Masters of the Arts in Psychological Counseling and a Master of Education in Mental Health Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University, where fae took extensive course work and engaged in research initiatives surrounding queer and gender expansive microaggressions/mental health concerns. Nyx has extensive experience working with queer and straight clients, couples, and groups surrounding exploring sexuality/gender, kinks, consensual non-monogamy, and polyamory. They also have experience providing clinical documentation in support for gender affirming care for transgender and gender expansive individuals. Listening, validation, curiosity, challenging, and accountability are important features of Nyx’s approach to their work with faer clients. Through consultation, Nyx seeks to amplify the messages and teachings of Queer folx, TGNC folx, & the BIPOC community to create affirming practices/policies. As a supervisor, fae aims to assist their supervisees and colleagues with developing culturally responsive approaches to therapy and increase competencies for working with queer and gender variant clients
