• Philadelphia police say they will step up enforcement in Kensington, starting next week, as part of the city’s plan to restore the neighborhood. KYW’s City Hall bureau chief Pat Loeb reports the entire class graduating this season from the Police Academy will be deployed to the drug-ravaged neighborhood.
• A South Philadelphia man was sentenced to 15 to 30 years behind bars, after pleading guilty Monday to killing Philadelphia journalist and LGBTQ and homeless services activist Josh Kruger. KYW’s Mike DeNardo reports from the Center for Criminal Justice.
• A teenager is dead and a 21-year-old man is fighting for his life after a shooting near a busy intersection in West Philadelphia on Monday morning. KYW's crime and justice reporter Kristen Johanson has more.
• Police are searching for the gunmen who shot and killed a man in West Philadelphia, in what investigators believe was a drive-by shooting. It was shortly before 11-30 Sunday night when police say they responded to a call of person with a gun at 51st and Market Streets. That's where officers found the 23-year-old man with several gunshot wounds to the head and body. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
• Protestors flocked to the Delaware County Courthouse on Monday as they took a stand against animal cruelty. The rally is related to a case involving an Upper Darby woman, accused of torturing animals and streaming videos of the alleged abuse online. KYW’s Justin Udo reports — and we want to warn you that details in this story may be disturbing to some listeners.

• Another public event in South Jersey was forced to shut down early due to unruly crowds over the weekend. Six people were arrested, including two juveniles.
• Philadelphia City Council is expected to vote this week on a zoning change that will clear the way for a new city health center on the grounds of Friends Hospital in the Northeast. Some neighbors have opposed the site.
• The country’s largest African street festival was back once again in Philadelphia with visitors, vendors and performers.

• Catcher Luis Torrens turned Nick Castellanos’ bases-loaded roller in front of the plate into a game-ending double play, and the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 on Sunday for a split of their two-game London Series.

• Combining brunch and baseball, because of the time difference, the Phillies played the second game in their first ever series in London. KYW’s Justin Udo was hanging with some hometown fans.
• Students at Philadelphia’s Science Leadership Academy were honored by C-SPAN, for their entry in a documentary competition. The story from KYW education reporter Mike DeNardo.
• The city's 49th annual Odunde Festival, the largest African American street festival in North America, is underway in South Philadelphia. The free, outdoor festival, rooted in West African culture features a variety of vendors, craftspeople, artists, and performers, headlined by R&B group Dru Hill.
• In West Philly on Saturday, all kinds of music was performed on the front porch. KYW’s Nigel Thompson was there for Porchfest.
• The Kimmel Center is honoring a famous Philadelphia singer and civil rights icon. Its main music hall, Verizon Hall, is now re-dedicated as Marian Anderson Hall.
• He's got a World Weries ring from 2008, and now the august Belmont Trophy for winning the third jewel in horse racing's triple crown. Former Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth is co-owner of Belmont Stakes winner Dornoch.

KYW Newsradio All Local for Sunday June 9, 2024 (Morning Edition):

• Who's ready for Day Two of London baseball? After a 7-2 win Saturday, this morning is the second and final game of the Phillies' London Series against the rival Mets. Mickey O'Malley is a Philly native who now resides in California. But that hasn't stopped him from being a Phillies fan, and he flew all the way out to London for the series. He tells 94 WIP he couldn't be more excited to be there to celebrate his team.
• Even though the Phillies are across the pond, it hasn't stopped fans from flocking to local bars to watch the series. KYW’s Nigel Thompson got in on some of the fandom back home.
• Sunday is the city's 49th annual Odunde Festival — the largest African-American street festival in North America. The free, outdoor event is rooted in West African culture. It features a variety of vendors, craftspeople, artists and performers. It opens at 10 a.m. The River Procession meets at noon and then street festival entertainment begins at 1:30 — headlined by R&B group Dru Hill. It's all happening along South Street from 17th to 24th street and in the surrounding area.
• Representatives of C-SPAN were in Philadelphia last week to honor students for their winning entries in the network’s documentary contest.  We get the story from KYW education reporter Mike DeNardo.
• Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” hits theaters next weekend. One of the actors was in Philadelphia, even making a stop at a Phillies game. KYW’s Sabrina Boyd-Surka caught up with him.

• The Phillies beat the Mets in the London opener Saturday 7-2. Fans showed their support from across the pond. 
• Bald eagles and osprey are no longer considered endangered species in New Jersey.

• Around 3 p.m. Friday, tears and final embraces came in abundance as students, faculty and alumni rallied on and around the steps of Hamilton Hall, the main UArts building on South Broad Street.

• Gov. Josh Shapiro served breakfast at a South Philadelphia school Friday to push his spending plan for K-12 schools, as a state budget deadline approaches at the end of the month.
• Gladys Coriano was described by her sisters and four children Friday as a devoted, faithful mother who lived to serve others. She started her life in poverty but worked hard to get a college degree, build a career, buy a house and save for retirement. But all of that was ripped away three years ago by her ex-husband Adriano Coriano.
• Friday was National Gun Violence Awareness Day. A Philly organization held a vigil honoring victims. 
• Nonprofit Rebuilding Together Philadelphia plans to repair 40 houses in Strawberry Mansion this year. On Friday, a few on the 3200 block of Randolph Street got some sprucing up!

• The University of the Arts is set to shut down on Friday, a week after officials shocked the school community and announced that the 150-year-old institution would close because of financial struggles.
• A dog was shot after an altercation between a man and woman in the city’s Nicetown–Tioga neighborhood early Friday morning.
• State police in Lancaster County have arrested a foster parent on charges he sexually abused children under his care.
• New Jersey’s Assembly Education Committee heard several hours of testimony for and against an amended bill that would allow controversial books to remain on school and public library shelves. It would also prevent legal action against librarians.

• Family members of Robert Davis, the man accused of killing Philadelphia journalist, activist and former city employee Josh Kruger, are calling on the District Attorney’s Office to release more evidence about the victim.
• Philadelphia City Council passed three resolutions on Thursday committing to safeguarding the rights of LGBTQ residents.
• The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission is touring all 67 counties of the commonwealth in an effort to “build beloved communities.”
