• Officials in Delaware County announced two men have been charged for separate homicides that were both committed in Upper Darby. 
• Pennsylvania State Police investigated 336 crashes and made 326 arrests for driving while intoxicated over the New Year’s holiday weekend. Both figures are down from last year.
• Wednesday’s preview of Philadelphia’s Martin Luther King Day of Service on Jan. 15 had a special guest: newly inaugurated Mayor Cherelle Parker.
• A storm moving across the southern United States could develop into a nor'easter as it approaches the Delaware and New Jersey coasts. So, for folks who may need a reminder, experts are extending some safety tips.

• Police chased a pair of robbery suspects in an SUV from Upper Darby to Center City early on Wednesday. One of the suspects was arrested after he ran back to the vehicle to retrieve a dog that was left behind.
• Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker signed three executive orders on her first day in office on Tuesday, including a public safety emergency declaration. 
• Temple University Health System has launched a system-wide lung cancer screening program. Its purpose is to catch the disease early, in the hope of saving lives.

• Authorities in Delaware County arrest two men for separate homicides they say were both committed in Upper Darby last year. KYW Newsradio's Justin Udo has more.

• The nation’s fourth-largest police department now officially has a new top cop. Kevin Bethel on Tuesday swore his oath to the city as its new police commissioner.
• A long-term closure of the Chestnut Street Bridge over I-95 is slated to begin Jan. 15, as part of the massive $329 million project to build a new cap over the interstate.

• Brewery owners in New Jersey have temporary relief from some restrictions on events and menu offerings, and they hope a permanent solution is close.

• As the calendar flipped from ’23 to ’24, new laws took effect in nearly every state. A higher minimum wage in Delaware and New Jersey and criminal justice reform in Pennsylvania are among the new laws now taking effect.
• The influential chair of the SEPTA Board, Pasquale T. "Pat" Deon, is stepping down this month after 24 years at the helm.
• 2024 brings a new era to Philadelphia: a new mayor, a new police commissioner and a new president of the police union. 

The KYW Newsradio All-Local for Monday, Jan. 1, 2024 (Morning Edition):

• New Year's Day in Philadelphia means it's time for 10,000 or so Mummers to strut their stuff through Center City. KYW's John McDevitt was out there earlier than most.
• Gun violence continues to plague Philadelphia with more than 1,600 people shot in the city in 2023, but it’s fewer victims than in recent years. Police say they’ve taken about 6,000 guns off the street. KYW Crime and Justice reporter Kristen Johanson spoke with the interim police commissioner, who says violent crime is down 7%.
• A 38-man-year old man was killed in Kensington around 3:30 a.m. Sunday when, police say, he was shot 21 times. Authorities say they didn’t arrest anyone and they did not find any weapons at the scene.
• Throngs of people in Philadelphia watch New Year's Eve fireworks every year from Penn's Landing — and, for many, it’s a tradition. KYW’s Nina Baratti was there.
• New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest nights of the year for parties, but parents say traditions like the Please Touch Museum's Countdown to Noon are a vital addition to the day for kids. KYW’s Nigel Thompson was there with about 6,000 kids and parents to welcome the new year their own ball drop — well before bed time.

• Amtrak ended 2023 with major delays on its Northeast Corridor, canceling some trains because signal issues and forcing SEPTA and NJ Transit to suspend service out of Philly’s 30th Street Station through the morning. KYW’s Nigel Thompson spoke to affected riders waiting out long delays on New Year's Eve.
• A pregnant woman was killed, and four others were hurt, Saturday afternoon in Bala Cynwyd when a driver hit them. Then a physical altercation occurred, according to officials. The incident remains under investigation.

• It's a busy time for pyro-technicians at the Navy Yard, as they get ready for the two New Year's Eve fireworks shows over Penn's Landing. KYW Newsradio's Mike DeNardo reports.
• The Mummers are getting ready to shine on New Year’s Day. 10,000 costumed performers will parade down Broad Street including members of 10 fancy brigade clubs that also perform two shows inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center. That’s where we find KYW Newsradio’s John McDevitt.

• Today marks the fifth day of Kwanzaa festivities, a day to celebrate Nia, or purpose. To commemorate day the fourth day, a holiday bazaar showcased dozens of Black-owned businesses. KYW Newsradio’s Nigel Thompson reports from Franklin Square.
