  • Episode 18 Prebiotics and Probiotics

While the word probiotic is well known these days. I wonder just how many of us know what it means.

Here is one way to think about what they are. The prefix “bio” means life.  The prefix “anti”  means against life while the prefix “pro” means for life. Therefore, probiotic means for life and antibiotic means against life. Antibiotics are given to destroy harmful bacteria when we are ill. Probiotics are given to save the lives of beneficial bacteria.

  • Episode 15 -The Connection Between The Gut and Thyroid Gland Part Two

In this podcast, I would like to talk more about the communication breakdown in the HPT loop. To review briefly what we covered in episode 14. The Connection Between The Gut and Thyroid Gland Part One

. Our thyroid hormones are monitored by the hypothalamus which sends a message to the pituitary which relays that message to the thyroid to increase the production of T-4 hormones. But what happens if the thyroid malfunctions and is unable to follow the directions from the hypothalamus and pituitary?

  • Episode 14- The Connection Between The Gut and Thyroid Gland Part One

If you have heard my other podcast episodes especially episode 13 on “What is Leaky Gut,” I hope you are starting to realize that gut health and overall good health are very closely connected.

Today we are going to look at the very important connection between the gut and thyroid.

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland that is located at the front of the throat.

As small as it is you wouldn’t expect it to create hormones that play such a major role in our health.  First and foremost, these hormones regulate our energy levels which are called metabolism.

In addition to regulating our energy levels here are a few more functions that the thyroid hormones have.

  • Episode 13 -What is thing called Leaky Gut ?

If healthy, the small intestine, which is about 23 feet long,  has a lumen or a wall that is not smooth but is covered with very tiny finger-like projections that make up the mucosal layer of tissue. These cells have an immune function which they perform by only allowing very small molecules to enter the bloodstream where nutrients for all of our cells are then supplied.

If our gut is functioning well, this process of permeability allows only beneficial molecules through this mucosal barrier but does not permit larger harmful molecules through this wall.

  • Episode 12 Food Allergies and Intolerance

I’m going to start this podcast with something that I hear from many of you when I talk about food choices. This is what they say. “ But I already eat a very healthy diet so changing my diet is not going to help me”. These ladies already have a negative mindset on this topic but that is because they read posts and hear from the medical professionals, day after day that there is nothing to help them except prescription drugs and palliative measures.

However,  have any of you considered that your healthy diet is actually hurting you?

Just a few weeks ago a lady wrote this on facebook. “I had fibromyalgia for twenty-five years and just found out that it has been my diet all along .” What a sad, sad story!

Well, I had the same experience after being ill for twenty years and then was told that I had  FMS at the age of 20.

Several years later I turned my life around with the help of a wellness specialist who changed my food choices and I got rid of foods that I was intolerant to. That along with specific supplements were the answer to relieve me of my dreadful pain and fatigue.

And you know what, you can do the same with my help!!!!

  • Episode 11 Digestion

I know this subject may not interest or excite you but we need to discuss it because the workings of the GI tract play a major role in your health. This is especially true when it comes to autoimmune disorders such as fibromyalgia. So let’s get going ….

The process of digestion is an extremely complex process so let's start the discussion with some simple basics. First, there are two types of digestion. These are mechanical and chemical. Mechanical digestion begins with the physical action of the mouth when you begin to chew your food which breaks it down into smaller pieces. This is followed by the action of the esophagus ( peristalsis)  which moves the food into the stomach.

  • Episode 10 : Answering Your Questions

So let’s get started today with the first question. 1. How do I improve my memory and stop brain fog? This was asked by Barbara S and Mona P and many others. Here are a few words in response to your question for those of you that suffer from the complaint of brain fog and memory problems.   Strong recent research is ongoing and the latest studies show that there is a great help in keeping the brain young by taking C0 enzyme q 10 which increases oxygenation to the brain cells.

The dosage would be 100 milligrams daily together with Coenzyme A which raises the effectiveness of C0q10.  Please note it takes time for these supplements to be helpful which means many months of consuming them.

  • Episode 9 Part Two IBS

There are millions of Americans who suffer from this condition and also it is very prevalent in those with fibromyalgia.

There are many causes of IBS  usually involving some kind of imbalance or disruption in the community of bacteria that can be traced to some combination of antibiotic use, infections, poor diet, and stress.

IBS puts the gut into a state of hypersensitivity so removing any foods or beverages that a person is sensitive to can help bring relief.

To obtain this relief from symptoms the place to start is by cutting out caffeine followed by drinks that contain fructose or artificial sweeteners, coffee, soda, and juice. This can be really hard for many people so this process needs to be slow by eliminating these things one at a time so you are not overwhelmed. It should be noted that the symptoms of IBS didn’t develop overnight so it is not going to go away in the same manner. These changes might not have to be permanent but it gives the body a temporary solution that gives it a rest from inflammation and symptoms that zap energy giving the body a chance to rebuild.  The diet that is most recommended for IBS is the Low- FODMAP Diet which is an acronym.
