PILLARS PODCAST 🎙

NICK MCEVOY went to Mater Dei, Gonzaga, and Penn State -- where he was a lacrosse star and stud on and off the field.  It was in the Nittany State at Happy Valley where he was turned on to THON -- a student-run philanthropy committed to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer.

Nick with be squaring off in a boxing match to raise money so that hopefully, with the help of people like Nick, cancer can be forever KO'd -- and no longer the scourge of so families.  In his own words, this is why Nick fights:

Growing up, a few mottos have stuck with me that I try to embody every single day. BE A GOOD GUY, MEN FOR OTHERS, and PLAYING FOR SOMETHING BIGGER THAN YOURSELF.

Following these mottos, I am trying to knockout cancer. I am participating in Haymakers for Hope, which is a charity boxing event for individuals and families who struggle with Cancer. The cancer organization I have chosen to support is THON! THON is a student-run philanthropy committed to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer.

NICK fights tomorrow night -- Thursday, October 13.  Please consider supporting Nick and CONTRIBUTE TO THON and the fight against stupid cancer!

CHEERS, and best of luck, Nick -- we are all in your corner!  Go get 'em tiger -- er, I mean you Nittany Lion!!!

CONNIE KEMPER is a longtime friend of mine (and also a longtime fan of the podcast), and in January, pulled the big trigger and made the big leap o'er continent and 'cross ocean to the island paradise of Hawaii.  However, it has not been all rainbows and surf breaks.

Connie is from South Korea, so Hawaii trends closer to her home soil, yet Connie has called DC home for most all of her life.  Hawaii has been a homecoming of sorts, but not without growing pains.  Connie and I talk about struggle, mental health, imposter syndrome, travel, family, making new friends in a new culture -- and begin with some fun facts about Hawaii -- truly a state unlike any other -- maybe the architects that be did, indeed, save the best state for last!!

CHEERS!

Bob Kemp was a great man of family, faith, athletics -- just to name a few!  Unfortunately this great man's life -- like too many -- was cut short way too soon.  Fortunate for us, however, Bob left a legacy of love in his wake.

Since Bob's passing in 2014 -- CJ, his six siblings, and his mom have orchestrated the premier fall-ball lacrosse experience at our alma mater -- Georgetown Prep.  SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9 will see Harvard v UNC in a 5 quarters of elite NCAA lacrosse.  Face-off is at 1:00 and admission is free, but please to consider making a donation to the Washington Jesuit Academy and the education of a young men of DC.

CHEERS, CJ -- and hope to see everyone out on what is sure to be a beautiful fall afternoon (not unlike today)!

For the 111 episode, I had the championship pleasure of talking with Timmy "LAXRAT" Connolly (and to everyone out there -- ask Tim about LAXRAT -- she's good-to-great, backed in and ready to go -- with maybe even a better story)!

Timmy and Dan "CAPT. UNDERPANT" Bernardi won the 17th annual Salty Dog Classic in a big kinda way.  Not just because they are both large and have eerily similar body frames -- but  because they played remarkable team golf -- ham & egg, yin & yang, ding & dong -- you pick (I am going with ding-dong) -- however at the end of 18 holes they bested 41 of the Bethany's best!

Congratulations, Tim & Dan -- you two are worthy champions and cheers to a lifetime of  friendship (you two should exchange numbers -- wait, this already happened at the SALTY DOG CLASSIC)

Long live the SDC, and every last one of you!

Stay salty, my friends!

Billy G!

Bastian & Alex are a couple of the finest of the SSBP -- Sussex Shoes Beach Patrol.  As the Summer finds her way to a big finish, Bastian, Alex, and I talk competitions, workouts, the SSBP family, saves & safety, zinc-oxide on the nose, PBJ's, weather, surf, and safest and most fun shore on the beach!

A big thank you from we to you for keeping us safe and inspiring us through your hard work on the sand and in the stand.

You guys rock!!!

MAZ loved everyone and everyone loved MAZ.  Some people just have a way about them -- the world and life seems to come easy -- and I'd venture to say this is largely because MAZ  was in a total, beautiful harmony with the universe -- doing exactly what he was placed on this marbled rock to do -- teach, mentor, inspire the next generation of young men and women.

"With a pure heart the universe conspires in your favor."

MAZ was taken from us at too young of age (but who am I to say); however, what is certain is that MAZ is missed tremendously.  When such a force for good to taken, a gulf is left in the wake.  Alas, time marches on, but not without keeping a little (or a lot) of this the MAZ MAGIC about us -- to remember the MAZ's magic, is to become a little magical ourselves!

At Georgetown Prep, where MAZ taught for much of his career, there will be forever enshrined The Steven A. Maczynski Lecture Hall where young men and women will convene  to dialogue on the high ideals of peace & global stewardship -- all-the-while listening to lectures that tickle the brain and concerts that fire the heart.  At a time when we crave for love, levity, and true passion -- the time is NOW, and we need your help to make this beautiful dream and reality.

Ms. Rosita Whitman and MAZ were kindred spirts and worked hand-in-hand to elevate, levitate Prep's international community.  These two human gems are a large reason why Prep's resident community is sought after the world-around and impacts back the world at large!  It was a true treat to sit down with Rosita at Prep, above the South Room, and in the hollowed library of the Jesuits for a touching, lively, loving, fun conversation -- the only thing that was missing was MAZ, yet we trust that he is smiling down that big MAZ grin (no doubt having more fun than us!)!

All this being said about a wonderful man, please find it in your hearts and pocket-books to contribute for the completion of the MAZ lecture hall -- there certainly will be no better timeless beacon of virtue.

The Steven A. Maczynski Lecture Fund

PS -- There is a currently a 100% match going on for every donation -- but not for long!!!

Finn is a rising “Youngster” — as in a sophomore at the Naval Academy.   Before the academy on the Severn of Annapolis, Finn went to Georgetown Prep and Mater Dei.  Thanks, Finn, for sitting down while overlooking the great Atlantic to tell your story and speak your passion about service to our awesome nation on our beautiful birthday — the Fourth of July!

🇺🇸-❤️-💥

Fire up the 'cast and gain some behind the lines insight into this 150 year old tradition, for Mr. Eric M. Brancaccio, he knows his tennis, and this is why Eric is the PILLARS ambassador to everything racket-sport -- our resident-fuzzy-green-ball-guru!

ENJOY, and stay tuned for another fuzzy and fun episode next week as we all head into the teeth & finals of Wimbledon!

Please pass the bubbly!

Emma Jane Goodman is an incredible artist.  By means of using the word incredible -- I quite literally mean that I cannot believe the things that flows from the pencil, pen, brush as Emma lets dance her hand, fingers, wrist -- art imitating life imitating art -- this is beyond my purview of understanding -- and that is why it was such a treat and honor to have Emma on the podcast to help color the black & white of my life.

I tried to keep up and it is my hope that some of her beauty is conveyed.  Alas, however, as we know too well -- there somethings that words can attempt to approach yet will never touch -- and art is certainly one of them -- so please enjoy this listening experience, but for the full effect, check out Emma for yourself -- it'll be the best thing you've done all day!

This is US Open Week and with all this talk about the LIV Tour, Bob Dolan and I talked nothing about it and all about the golf of this country and arguably the biggest tourney on our soil -- THE US OPEN.  Also Bob is about half-way through his last year as club professional at Columbia Country Club.  I remember way back to when I was 13 years old in 1995 when Bob took over the reigns from Bill Strawsbaugh -- so there was a lot there to talk about.

Bob, thank you so much for talking time out of what is no doubt a busy day to talk with PILLARS -- that was generous of you!  And go Denny McCarthy & Justin Thomas!!!
