Claire was born in January of 1985. She was taken from her mother to be examined after if was discovered she had been born with the lower part of her left leg severe-ly disfigured. She underwent countless procedures and surgeries to reconstruct the limb, but was told she would never have full function of her left leg and should ab-stain from dance, sport, and other physical activity. Claire was always strong willed, some would say stubborn, and she took up jogging when she was in college and away from her parents and doctors. She fell in love with the sport and disputed the pain she was used to her whole life, continued training. In 2009 she sought out an amputation when she was 24, thinking if she had it done early she could learn to use a prosthetic and continue to pursue her love of running. Instead the orthopedic sur-geon she met with decided on a complete ankle fusion. After months of being in a cast she was finally able to learn to run again, and ran her first race, a half mara-thon, three months after being cleared to walk. She went on to complete countless half and full marathons, and eventually 18 ultra marathons including the completion of two 100 mile races. The health of her left leg was deteriorating, and she knew her time with two legs was coming to an end. After using a cane for about a year and being put on heavy medications and even attempting a spinal surgery that al-most ended her life in the end of 2017 to end her pain, she finally found a medical team that understood her history, and had her left foot and ankle amputated in early 2018. She has been working with a world class prosthetic center in orlando Florida, and is now able to get her miles in daily pain free! She is working on a run-ning blade, but that will have to wait until later this year because she and her hus-band are expecting a new baby this summer.
