Steve Geppi appeared on YouTube a few days back to talk about the state of Diamond Distributors and the comics world. I'm not going to respond point by point here, but he said a few things that prompted me to say a few things. So here we go!

I haven't done one of these in a couple years: A comics purge, where I reassess what comics means to me, and ditch the ones that I don't need anymore. In this episode, I'll go over which comics I'm getting rid of (generally speaking), how many, and why I know I'm getting old in the process.

Today, I'll run through four assorted stories in relation to the most recent podcasts discussing the future of the Direct Market and the retailers' reactions to it.
The Direct Market is not Comics. And Comics is not the Direct Market.
What should creators be doing during this time?
What move did Boom! make, and how is it the perfect example of how comics publishing works?
If the Direct Market blows away, where do all the comics go?

Before you listen to this podcast, read Brian Hibbs' article on Comics Beat: https://www.comicsbeat.com/how-comics-retailing-moves-forward/
The retailers document that I'm quoting so liberally from now requires permission to read. I don't know how freely they're granting that, to be honest. This podcast's dramatic reading of the article may be as close you get to it.

What if it all goes wrong? What if not enough stores survive? And Diamond fails? And publishers fold? This is the doom and gloom scenario thought exercise.
With a bonus tangent: What is government's role in the arts? Trust me, it's not as political as that sounds, but I'm thinking about this in a different way than I think most people do. It's worth bringing up, especially in light of a scenario which sees the comics market implode.
Except for Kickstarters, really, for as long as there are fans willing to back those....

Yes, I've started a more focused effort at learning French this year.
It's not my first time. I took two years of French in high school. Remarkably, 25 years later, a lot of that stuff is still stuck in memory. I'm rediscovering stuff I had long forgotten and holding onto it pretty well.
The trick is using the DuoLingo app and website. In this edition of the Pipeline Comics podcast, I'll tell you about the app, how I'm using it, and what results I've seen already.
If you want to learn a foreign language, whether it be French or something else, I'd gladly recommend DuoLingo. (No, this is not an ad. In fact, I don't think DuoLingo even has an affiliate program...)
Stick around to the end for a minor announcement about the scheduling of this podcast for the near (and likely far) future...
And I think I promised a link for something during the show, and then forgot to write it down. Email me if you need it. I'll update these show notes.

Yes, Coronavirus appeared as a villain in an Asterix book in 2017. But correlation is not prediction. Ignore the crazy headlines you've seen elsewhere, and let me tell you what's going on, for real.

DC showed Dan DiDio the door last Friday. The comics internet has been abuzz ever since.
What's next for DiDio? I think there's a pattern we've been seeing lately in the world of comics that DiDio could slip neatly into.
Also, we go back to 2004 for something I wrote about DiDio's performance at a WizardWorld Philadelphia panel presentation...
