Due to the timeliness of some of the recommended comics on sale in this podcast, I'm releasing it early. Go check out the sales this weekend and get yourself some amazing reading material for dirty cheap!
The gist of this podcast: Marvel wants you to pay $5 for a 20 page story. Here's a source for hundreds of BD albums with 2x - 4x the pages of storytelling for a lesser price, some as low as $1.

Comic books aren't in trouble. The Direct Market is in trouble. There's no better single example of this than the way the market relies so heavily on variant covers to bring in the money instead of, you know, new comics or new comics readers.

Marvel has licensed out any comics not meant for readers over the age of, say, 21 to IDW and Scholastic now. Is this just a good business move to cater to your core competency and let others spread your brand message? Does this tell us that Disney sees Marvel as solely a Direct Market company that it's unwilling to expand to attack new markets with?
Has Marvel Comics officially given up on the kids and is letting Disney parse that out now?

Programming note: I recorded this podcast last week. So when I refer to Bastille Day as being during "this week," you'll understand why I said that better. (That's July 14th, for my non-Francophone friends.)

Two Must Read notes before listening to this podcast:
First, it was recorded on Saturday morning while news and rumors were still in the midst of breaking and I hadn't even read much of them yet. I almost didn't publish this because parts of it felt incomplete in the light of new thoughts. But the second half is so "timeless," that it didn't seem right to bury it.
Second: DC does not own the two new distributors that are launching to carry their books. But when two smaller companies rely on one client for 99% of their business, that client controls the game. DC might as well own them.
I know I promised a link in the show notes somewhere during this episode. And as soon as I find it, I'll include it in here.

Miss Endicott is a two part series that's now available digitally through Europe Comics. I've read the first book and was impressed by the artwork of Xavier Fourquemin and colorist Scarlett Smulkowski. Let's talk about that a little...

The three volume "Exo" series has, to my storytelling mind, some fundamental shortcomings that turn what might be a good story into something of a confusing mess. It all makes sense in the end, but getting there was more confusing that exciting. And then there's the bad drug trips, which are just as bad a bit of plot mechanics as dream sequences.

This time around, I'm taking a look at the first volume of a two-parter called "The Detection Club." It's a story based on a real life social club that started in the 1930s for detective writers in Great Britain. They're a fascinating cast of characters, with quick wits and dialogue that drips with sarcasm, put downs, and one-liners. It's all very... British. And I LOVE it.
Corrections:
* The second volume of "The Detection Club" is only 51 pages long, not 100. And this first volume is 88 pages, not 100. So this series really is more a three volume set collected in two volumes, for whatever reason... See? I can still do math good.
* I may have slightly mispronounced "Peter Ustinov" to sound more like "Houstonov." That was a slip of the tongue from talking too fast. Management, as always, regrets the error.
