ELKTON, S.D. — Mariah Press has announced the release of “BELIEVE: The Story of Lovley’s Curse,” which covers Elkton’s boys’ basketball program. Jim McKeown is the author of the book. He has participated in book signings in Brookings and elsewhere. He also is available for lectures, book clubs and school presentations. Elkton was home of South Dakota’s first dynasty in scholastic sports, with three championships during a period from 1915-1920 — back when it was a single-class title. The Elks were the only small school to win a championship in that single-class system. It’s the South Dakota version of “Hoosiers,”...

MADISON, S.D. — The pipeline between Pipestone Area Schools and Dakota State University continues to flow with ease. PAS senior quarterback Landon Quist made it official on Monday, Feb. 10, signing an NAIA National Letter of Intent with DSU to further his athletic and academic careers. “I really liked the opportunity to go there,” Quist said in an email to the Pipestone County Star, “and compete right away for a chance to play.” Quist also noted the smaller student-to-professor ratio as another reason why he chose DSU. “Landon is a kid that’s worked really hard,” PAS head coach Scott Boomgaarden...

WINDOM — For the sixth time in the past two seasons, the Pipestone Area Schools girls’ basketball team will play Windom Area. Tip-off for this Section 3AA South subsection contest is set for 7 p.m. Friday at “The Nest,” the affectionate name for Windom’s gymnasium. PAS continues to get better with each game against Windom, who eliminated the Arrows from the postseason last year 81-61 — a game that saw junior guard/forward Jadyn Kor eclipse 1,000 points. On Dec. 13, 2024 here in town, Windom defeated PAS 80-72 as Haidyn and Hadley Sammons combined for 56 points. Kor totaled 33...

Three Games. Three close victories for the Pipestone Area Schools’ boys basketball team. The Arrows opened last week with a 65-62 victory over Southwest Minnesota Christian, followed that with a 76-71 Big South Conference conquest over St. James Area and wrapped it up with a 59-56 upset over 18-win Class A ninth-ranked Russell-Tyler-Ruthton. So, PAS won those games by a total of 11 points. The team was living right. “It was a great week for the boys,” PAS head coach Michael Slaba said. “Whenever you can win three games in a row that are all single-digit victories, it’s a great...

The Pipestone Area Schools’ gymnastics team prepared for this week’s Section 3A meet wrapping up the regular season with home meets versus St. James Area and Martin County Area. The Arrows split with their opponents. PAS handily defeated SJA, 133.075-115.350, but suffered a slim 132.750-131.525 loss to the Magic. The Arrows finished with a 5-4 record in duals this season. “Both of our meets last week were great preparation for sections,” PAS head coach Stacie Wallace said. “We took on two teams that were close to us in average team score. We will find ourselves right in the mix at...

When this sports editor was in high school back in Connecticut, he attempted to stand atop a balance beam. The experience left him, quite frankly, a bit terrified. It gave me a new appreciation for gymnastics, and the athletes that perform in this event — one of the four competitive disciplines for girls/women. Maybe it’s the beam’s measurements that freak me out the most, with a slim width of 3.9 inches and 16-foot length while 4.1 feet off the surface. “It is thrilling and difficult because it is only about four inches wide,” Pipestone Area Schools senior co-captain Samantha Radloff...
