Today Pittsburgh commemorates the Tree of Life Synagogue mass shooting that happened on this day five years ago. As NewsRadio KDKA's Shelby Cassesse reports, the congregation is looking to the future. Tree of Life's Remember. Rebuild. Renew. campaign continues as leaders work to create a new design and mission at the synagogue. CEO Carole Zawatsky says the design process is complete. Crews are completing asbestos remediation. Eighty percent of the current building will be demolished once that is complete. 

North Allegheny schools will soon have a police department. The school board voted unanimously Wednesday to proceed with a proposal for armed officers patrolling the district's buildings. The next step is hiring a police chief and 12 officers. They will be school district employees with authority to detain and arrest students.

A new lighting system is being installed on Pittsburgh's sister bridges, and tonight we'll get a glimpse of what they'll look like. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald is expected to preview the lights on the Rachel Carson Bridge including three animated light shows. The upriver lane of the bridge will be closed to traffic during tonight's event, which gets underway at 8 p.m. The new lights are also being installed on the Clemente and Warhol bridges. 

Two people are dead following a house fire in Washington County this morning. 911 dispatchers say the fire broke out on the 100 block of East Katherine Avenue in Washington City just after 6 a.m. Firefighters say the structure was fully involved. The flames were under control in less than an hour. Other details are not available yet.

This morning marked the first frost of the season, but forecasts show a mild start to winter. NewsRadio KDKA's Shelby Cassesse has the story:

Temperatures will be in the 70s for the rest of the week - perhaps foreshadowing a lack of winter weather to end the year. Meteorologist Matt Benz says it's thanks to an el nino cycle. 

He said the tail end of winter could be a different story, where the bulk of the snow could come around March.

Will independent truck drivers soon be forced to leave Pennsylvania? It's a concern on the minds of many truckers. NewsRadio KDKA's Pat Septak explains:

[The state of California currently has laws on the books that would require those in the trucking industry to essentially drive more expensive trucks in that state because of the lower emissions. Lewie Pugh [Pew] - the Executive Vice President of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association - tells The Rick Dayton Show that if similar legislation passes here in Pennsylvania, the financial considerations could force many truckers to leave the state:

A man was found shot to death last night in Penn Hills. Allegheny County Police say a 911 call about the shooting came in a few minutes before 11 p.m. First responders sent to the 200 block of McGregor Drive found the man inside a vehicle.

10 Pittsburgh area Rite Aid locations have already or are being closed in the wake of the pharmacy chain's Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. The company says the prescriptions of costumers at closed locations will be transferred. See which locations are involved at KDKA Radio dot com.

Police are looking for a driver involved in a hit and run in Carrick this morning. A teenage boy was struck by a vehicle on Brownsville Road and East Agnew Avenue before 7:15 a.m. and the driver left the scene. The boy was in stable condition when he was taken to a hospital. Police used video to identify the vehicle and license plate. Nothing yet on an arrest.

[The drug store chain has been grappling with slow sales, mounting debt and lawsuits alleging it contributed to the nation's opioid epidemic. It also just appointed Jeffrey Stein as its new CEO and chief restructuring officer as well as a member of its board. The Wall Street Journal reports about 500 stores could close as a result, then the company would sell or let creditors take over the rest. There are more than 21-hundred locations across the country.]
