The team begin with a fascinating discussion regarding statistics and the assessment of risk. The generalised risks of surgery and the way in which NELA (National Emergency Laparotomy Audit) data may soon make it possible to work out specific odds for a specific patient.

Handling modifiable risk factors; how do we get patients ready for surgery, particularly if they are suffering from comorbidities? A patient may need an operation but is it worth asking, do they need it now? How can we bend the risk curve with proactive advice which may change pathological health issues? How do we inspire patients to look after themselves and become more active within their treatment? Does confronting the realities of surgery help with that education process?
