Question: I want to stop podcasting. Do I have to pay my podcast host to keep my episodes online?br /
Answer: Yes, Blubrry and most other hosts will remove your episodes after you cancel your hosting plan. It’s just like the electric bill, you still have a minimum payment even if you never turn on a light that month. In podcast hosting, you have to keep the plan open to keep the files stored online. Most hosts (Blubrry included) allow you to switch to the lowest plan and ALL your back episodes will stay online.br /

  • Taking Care of Podcast Gear – PCI 252
It's important to take care of your podcast gear, regardless of the original cost. Podcasters should take the time to clean, properly store and travel with their podcasting gear such as microphones, headphones, mixers, recorders, etc.

    Best Practice
Studio Hygiene, how to take care of your gear.

Keep it clean (dust free is best!)

If you have to set it up to do your show every time, find a good place to store your gear. A protective case, dedicated drawer or shelf, a towel or cloth cover never hurt.

Cables are fragile. Don’t roll them too many times.

If it’s in a set location, limit access to that location. Keep pets, kids, significant others and coworkers away from it if at all possible.

You can also tape down cables so they don’t move around or get caught by someone.

Double check your settings on everything before you record. Never assume that it will always hold settings and that it will always work the same way. Do a 10 second record test before you start your show to make sure you’re getting a good capture.

Power down anything you can while not in use.

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: David asks, “There was a typo in the post title of my latest episode. I just fixed it on WordPress. How long does a change like that typically take to filter out to the podcast apps?”
Answer: It depends on the app. As with everything RSS based, it will refresh on the app or directory the next time that app or directory (or your listener) pulls the feed. Sometimes things like that can take longer than a new episode. If it doesn’t change in a reasonable time (day or so), It will the next time you publish an episode.
This goes for any publishing platform, not just WordPress / PowerPress.

Why Your Recording Environment is Critical by Toby

    Interview
    Shawn Thorpe - Support team

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: I want to do simple editing of my podcast recordings.  Nothing too deep, but I want to be able to clip the ends, add in the intro and do the basic stuff. What do you suggest for editing audio?
Answer: There are a couple of good ‘free’ ways to edit audio.  If you are on a Mac, Garage Band is good enough for simple edits. Audacity is good but a little hard to learn. We use Adobe Audition, which is a subscription software, and our Blubrry Pro team also uses Audition; Shawn uses Reaper. There are others at various costs and learning curves.

This week a bit of a soap box. There is more to podcasting than ad revenue? There seems to be a push for more ad tech, more ways to track and attribute you across apps and a push for more ads. What is this doing to the indie podcaster that isn’t in this for the money? They are in it for fun, the craft, the community and just as a hobby.

Answer: Riverside.fm, Zoom (meeting software), Skype (with call recorder), or Streamyard. Bring a decent mic with you when you travel. Also, don’t forget the headphones! Todd uses an ATR2100 USB microphone and Mike uses an SM58 with a Zoom H5 recorder as an audio interface. Those work with the above software to record.

Get more listeners with a podcast website! by Troy Price

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: Hi Blubrry! How are you going to be supporting the Apple Podcasts paid subscriptions? I don’t see anything about it on your site.
Answer: Subscriptions in Apple Podcasts are 100% on Apple. Your website and your podcast host (no matter who it is) has nothing to do with this. Think of it like YouTube (sort of). You don’t upload or do anything outside of YouTube to publish a video, it’s 100% on their platform. This is Apple’s version of this and its audio and/or video. The difference is people have to have a paid subscription to listen or watch your content on that system.
Short answer is no, we will not be doing anything for Apple Subscriptions (or Spotify or Patreon or any other closed system). It’s a different distribution method, technically, not a traditional podcast. All other podcasts work mostly like they used to. Apple pulls them in via RSS and people can listen and “FOLLOW” (instead of subscribe) just like before.

    Question of the Week:
Question: I have a show transcript. Now what?
Answer: Transcripts aren’t good for SEO but those with context are. Often times transcripts contain too many filler words. We don’t talk the same way we write (or read). DO NOT use a full transcript as your show notes (blog post).
What I suggest is get the transcript and make it into a PDF or plain text file.  Upload that file to your media spot on your server and put a link to it in your blog post. PDFs are highly accessible for the visually impaired and are a good way for any hearing impaired people to read (more or less) what you say on your show.  This is not the same as captioning.
You can also put that URL in the transcript box in the post if you are using PowerPress.

  • Podcast Best Practice: File Naming – PCI 246
Not everything about podcasting is fun and creative; but it's useful to keep up on a handful of tips, for example, a podcast best practice: file naming conventions. Congratulations to Marco Arment, maker of Overcast for being inducted into the iOS App Hall of Fame!

    Best Practice:
File naming conventions - media files and artwork

Pick a naming convention for your media files and stick to it.

Example: Podcast Help Desk files are named phd001.mp3 and so on.  The number is to make sure the files are all named differently.

This show uses dates. Example: PCI-2021-6-3.mp3 will be the file name for this episode.

I’ve seen others use something like serial-s1e4.mp3 (for Serial Season 1, Episode 4)

Keep it consistent so YOU know how it works.

Only use numbers, letters, - (dash) or _ (underscore) in file names for anything on the web. Not just your media but artwork and other files that are downloadable.

Also, do not start or end a file name with anything but a letter or number.

No periods in the file name except for the extension (.mp3, .mp4, .m4a or .jpg).
We say this over and over, but PLEASE do not make your file names complicated or long. This does nothing for SEO and will clutter up your hard drive with crazy long names.

    Do not do this: Indusrties4Now_Episode_1-L_industrie_4_0_n_est_pas_une_option_pour_l_e_conomie_Canadienne_mais_une_ne_cessite_la_crise_provoque_e_par_le_Covid_19_est_a_l_origine_de_plusieurs_changements_Quels_sont_les_de_fis_qui_attendent_le_secteur_Man_.mp3

Apple's new podcast subscription service is available (latest iOS).

Apple has changed out 'following' (formerly subscribing) works. It no longer updates directly from the RSS feed to the user’s phone. The feed has to update in Apple’s directory before a new episode will be downloaded to the user. A fundamental change! This can cause several hour delays after publishing. We will do some testing to see exactly how this works and what it means for the podcaster.

Question: I’m using Cloudflare on my website. CastFeed Validator tells me that Cloudflare may cause issues with podcasting. Why is that?
Answer: Web Application Firewall services (WAF) can inadvertently block podcasting apps and should be avoided for podcast websites. CastFeedValdiator, a free podcast validation service by Blubrry Podcasting, identifies these potential issues that can cause harm to podcasts’ distribution and prevent users from playing episodes.

Big thing, listen to the answers from your interviewee, just in case there is a follow up question that makes more sense than what you have written down.  People want to hear your guest talk, not you :)

    Question(s) of the Week
Question: I want to do two podcasts from one WordPress site using PowerPress, preferably using either Channels or Category Podcasting. What is the difference between Category Podcasting and Podcast Channels and which one should I use?
    Answer:

Podcast Channels are great if you want to do a video version and an audio version of the same show.  Also, it’s good for 1 or 2 extra shows. The disadvantage is that it doesn’t scale well.  Any more than about 5 channels gets really hard to keep things separate.

Channels can also be used for doing a paid podcast using 3rd party membership plugins (so your show isn’t stuck on one platform)

Category Podcasting is great if you are going to do a BUNCH of podcasts or a small/medium network of more than 3 or 4 shows. The disadvantage of Category podcasting is the main podcast feed from the site has ALL the episodes (that might be an advantage) but it’s not a good way to add 1 more show as you have to move the main show to a category feed to keep them separate.

Interesting fact, We have a PowerPress user that has 750+ category feeds from one WordPress site (and some say WordPress can’t handle podcast feeds…)
Check out our two new webinars early June, on Category and Channel Podcasting. Look for sign up links soon.
