Podtrac released its US rankers for December 2024. Almost all publishers saw a decline in traffic, as is normal. Acast leapt from #5 to #3, but the company releases its data after its quarterly financial reports, so while everyone else is reporting on December, the Acast numbers are for October (and are actually unchanged month-on-month). NPR News Now returned to #1 podcast; two shows from SiriusXM are new in the podcast charts, though SiriusXM isn’t listed in the publishers chart.

January 07, 2025Podcast listener finds man wanted by police

An arrest has been made in connection with a murder in Australia 27 years ago, in the Port Cartwright cliffs in Queensland (above). Police have confirmed to Meshel Laurie, the host of Australian True Crime, that it was a listener to her podcast who provided information leading to the arrest last Thursday of Keith Lees, now aged 72. Lees was the subject of an Australian True Crime episode released on Dec 23: he had gone on the run after being questioned by police in June. The show has been with Acast since 2020.
At CES, microphone manufacturer Shure has released the MV7i - a new USB microphone which allows you to plug in a second XLR microphone of your choice.
More than 60 billion minutes of podcast content was downloaded through the Audioboom platform in 2024, according to the company’s review of the year. The company made $60mn for its creators.

January 06, 2025Spreaker more than doubles podcast numbers

iHeart’s consumer podcast host Spreaker published 13.5% of all new podcast episodes in December, according to Livewire - a record for the company, and an increase in share of 2.7x year-on-year. Its share was just 5% in December 2023, and it’s grown consistently since September. Spotify for Creators also saw an uplift to 24.4%; the #3 podcast host, Buzzsprout, saw a drop to 6.5%. Megaphone has also dropped year-on-year.
How many podcasts are being listened-to through web-based players? OP3’s John Spurlock looked at the top 300 shows for December as measured by the service: 5.17% of all episodes are listened through web-based players, but some shows are almost 100% consumed through the web.
Remote recording and editing tool Riverside chose Dec 30 to inform corporate customers that Riverside prices for each additional licence will double on Feb 1 to $100. The company raised $30mn three weeks ago.

January 03, 2025Spotify launches revenue-sharing Partner Program

Spotify has launched the Spotify Partner Program, a way to monetise your shows on the platform. “More than 65% of eligible shows and networks have already enrolled,” says the press release. You have to be hosted with Spotify (or Spotify’s Megaphone) in order to get access, and be based in the US, UK, Canada or Australia.
Creators get a 50% revenue share for ads sold. For any video episodes that “Spotify Premium subscribers in select markets stream uninterrupted”, creators earn “based on how much your content is streamed”, but there is no further detail. If you have baked-in host reads, you retain all revenue from those.
The hard-to-hit eligibility figures (30 day targets of 10,000 streamed hours on Spotify, and 2,000 unique Spotify users) are Spotify-exclusive numbers - which suggests that some podcasters might withdraw their shows from open RSS altogether if it helps them hit the eligibility figure.
How does YouTube compare? YouTube pays out more - giving creators 55% of ad revenues (though overall revenues might be lower), and shares a portion of YouTube Premium revenue with creators, based on watch time. YouTube’s also significantly easier to become eligible, needing 4,000 streamed hours in the last year, and 1,000 subscribers).
Anchor co-founder Michael Mignano has explained how Anchor managed to add shows to Apple Podcasts without forcing users to do it themselves - always a bone of contention with other podcast hosts. No, it wasn’t a secret API (which Apple always denied): it was... hiring college students to do it all manually.
How do you turn a true crime podcast into a video show suitable for YouTube? True Crime Reports from Al Jazeera, which launches this Sunday, combines AI-generated visuals to re-enact aspects of the cases, motion graphics, and interviews with individuals at the heart of these stories. It's a first for a large broadcaster; the show is a co-production between Al Jazeera and Message Heard.

More attention to retention will be one of the trends in podcasting in 2025, says the founder of Pod Houston, Ozeal Debastos in his yearly prediction piece for Podnews. He also predicts an audience-centric shift in the forthcoming year.
In December, total overall podcast downloads on Buzzsprout were down 14% year-on-year. However, we’d not worry; both Spotify and Apple showed increases in download share; and we covered a few days ago that the total number of podcasts being updated is up 2.5% year-on-year. (And, if you’re getting plays on YouTube, or uploading video to Spotify, those plays never get back to your podcast host anyway.)
From the archives: in February 2021, our Editor wrote a personal blog about “how to get another billion podcast listeners”. It reflects the fact that, while data costs are low for many in Western countries, that isn’t the case in developing countries, particularly South Africa, where at the time mobile data cost 23x the cost of the US. (To download an episode of This American Life on your mobile would have cost you the equivalent of $3.52).
An old article here on Podnews compares audio quality at different bitrates and filesizes. Or this page from NPR is a fun quiz. Marc Maron was once a 40kbps MP3 file; many NPR shows were 64kbps. The reason almost everyone uses 128kbps? Dynamic Audio Insertion, DAI. As Acast says: “In order for ads to be stitched into your audio file, the podcast audio files need to match the encoding of the ad audio file, and the ads are encoded at 128kbps MP3.”

In Vulture, Nick Quah writes a full piece about video podcasting, and whether “video will kill the audio star in 2025”. Some people he interviews make the case for enhanced discovery on video platforms. But, others point out a gender bias - men just turn up; but women are expected to “be camera ready”, as a quick check between Joe Rogan and Alex Cooper will point out. A thoughtful piece, it’s worth a read today.

Funding for NPR is under threat in 2025, after Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have written they intend to “take aim” at funding for NPR and PBS. NPR is one of the largest podcast publishers in the US (and has trained many producers who work elsewhere).
NPR itself earns less than 1% of its funding from the US government; though its member stations earn 14% of their income that way. In 2023, NPR’s total revenue was $318mn, but earned just $32mn directly from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which is funded by the federal government. By way of comparison, in the UK, the BBC’s revenue from government-mandated licence-fees in 2023 was US $4.6bn (£3,660mn); five times fewer people live in the UK than the US.
Eric Nuzum, a former NPR executive, suggests that those at NPR should lead with a concrete vision for the future, rather than take a defensive position.
The BBC published its top podcasts of 2024, based on plays within BBC Sounds, the Corporation’s proprietary audio app. The BBC’s daily news podcast Newscast was most popular, in a year with a UK and US election.
More podcasts are being updated this year: and more often. Livewire’s visualised podcast index stats has data today saying that 243,773 podcasts were updated in the last 14 days, up 2.5% from 237,693 this time last year. Additionally, 852,027 episodes were published in the last 14 days, up 7.6% from 787,243 in 2023.

That used to be a way to get Podnews to play, but now, thanks to Gemini, a bad voice reads news headlines badly. Podnews reader James Hart blogs on how to fix it. A Nest speaker continues to work, until Google breaks that, too.
Mind, Apple has also broken “Siri, play the news from Podnews”; our iPhone tells us that we don’t have Apple Podcasts installed (we do); and our Mac plays something on Apple Music that is not us.

Mobituaries with Mo Rocca is one of the biggest podcasts in the US, produced by CBS News and monetised by iHeart. Yet, depending where you listen, you get significantly more advertising.
We compared the same episode, downloaded from Brisbane, Los Angeles and New York. The ads are marked here in yellow. When downloaded in Australia, you get just two 30” ads (for a gambling company); when downloaded via a VPN in California, the adload was ten minutes 29 seconds (20% of the whole show). New York listeners get even more.
In our second spot break, in California we were served a 2’55” break. Yet, one Podnews reader on the East US coast heard the same episode: they were given a five minute spot break at that point. In total, they were given 18’40” of ads in the same show. Yikes. (Is our reader a desirable audience member, perhaps?)
Oddly, in California the second spot break was exactly the same as the third spot break.
Cumulus Media, the owner of the Westwood One Podcast Network, might be delisted from NASDAQ again, after the company traded below $1 a share for more than thirty days. It’s got until the middle of next year to sort things out, though. It was last delisted in 2017.
Happy Christmas to ART19, which certified to IAB v2.2 podcast guidelines on Dec 23. The IAB requires annual recertification, yet four companies still appearing in the IAB’s list were last certified in 2021 - three from iHeart (Omny Studio, Spreaker and Voxnest); and the German podcast host Audiorella.
