December 12, 2024Chartable switches off: what you have to do today

Chartable is switched off today. Among the many things the company offered was analytics - which it achieved with a “prefix”, looking like chtbl.com or chrt.fm in your RSS feed’s “enclosure” section, which counted your total downloads. You must remove this Chartable prefix today if you have one, otherwise your podcast may not play at all in the future. SmartLinks and SmartFeeds will also no longer work.
As of Saturday evening, the Chartable prefix was still in 21,585 shows (not including those in Megaphone). We know many have now been removed automatically by podcast companies. If you’re unsure, contact your host’s support team and ask.
Users of Spotify’s Megaphone need do nothing. Make sure the Megaphone integration in Chartable is set up in order to access the Chartable platform starting tomorrow. Here’s more information.
Don’t panic. Prefixes won’t stop working immediately, we understand. But they will stop working at some point in the future. It’s important to remove them today.
The closure of Chartable will have a big impact on download numbers. Changing an audio URL in your RSS feed, as you’ll do when removing Chartable prefixes, causes every Spotify listener’s app to automatically redownload every episode that may have been recently played, or that has been downloaded for future playback. Spotify is built to immediately replace audio if it changes (even in a listener’s cache), since record companies required that functionality for legal reasons. So, if you see bazillions of downloads for some reason, this will be why.
Ausha has launched Ausha Charts, a chart tracking service that also covers sub-categories and all countries for Apple and Spotify. The tool is currently a chart (and category) browser, and doesn’t let you search your show. (That’s coming).

Apple Podcasts can now be installed as an Android app, after the company made some unannounced changes to its website. While the app isn’t available in the Google Play store, it can now be installed to work identically to an app on Android phones - appearing in your app drawer, with the opportunity to buy premium subscriptions, and full localisation in different languages. Here’s how to install it.
This is a helpful way for Android users to access premium subscriptions and help support their favourite shows.
Riverside has raised $30mn in a new funding round. It previously raised $35mn in 2022, $9.5mn in 2021, and $2.5mn in 2020. The company has around 165 employees, and aims to be profitable in the next two years.
Riverside launched a multitrack editing tool last week, which works for both audio and video productions.
You can now include a timestamp when sharing a podcast from YouTube Music. You’ve been able to do this from YouTube (main) for some time; Spotify and Apple Podcasts also have this functionality.

The inductees for the 2025 Podcast Hall of Fame have been announced. Those recognised include Sounds Profitable’s Tom Webster, She Podcasts’ Jessica Kupferman and Libsyn co-founder Dave Mansueto. The ceremony is on Jan 17 in Orlando FL. So far, all 51 inductees have been from the US.
Fiction podcast The Program has released its year in review for 2024. The article contains how the show was marketed; how Spotify’s comments have been really helpful; download numbers; revenue; and even some choir music.
On Nov 29 Podnews highlighted the Spotify exec who was ignoring video on Spotify, preferring to upload video directly to YouTube. Good news: Bill Simmons, who is currently Spotify’s Head of Podcast Monetization and Innovation, has today uploaded a video to Spotify.
The video starts with a... promotion of “our new YouTube Channel, Ringer Movies”, which includes full video episodes of The Rewatchables and The Big Picture, two podcasts which are unavailable in video on Spotify. Seems like that memo hasn’t entirely sunk in.

Podcast company Acast has purchased New York-based creative podcast studio Wonder Media Network for a total value of $7.8mn. The six-year-old WMN makes its own original podcasts, and branded podcasts and digital content for a number of large companies. WMN’s team will combine with Acast’s existing creatives to form a new division called Acast Creative Studios.
Podtrac published its US rankers for November 2024. “All of the Top Global Networks were down on Global Downloads, Streams & Views in November over October.”
Potentially connected to the presidential election results, the only changes in the top 21 publishers are The DailyWire+ (up from #10 to #9); and the Fox Audio Network (up from #13 to #12). The Tucker Carlson Show is a new entry in the most popular podcasts at #6. These rankers measure participating publishers only.

Spotify launched 2024 Wrapped, its annual look back at your last year on the platform.
It includes 2024 Wrapped for Creators, which takes a look at your podcast and how it’s performed. For the Podnews Weekly Review, ours is here.
Spotify released a set of “top 10 podcasts”. We’ve got the global list, and those for the US, UK and Ireland. (Of note: the #10 global show is a Spotify exclusive show in Spain - we didn’t think they did those any more.)
There’s a fair amount of AI, too. Spotify launched a “Wrapped AI podcast”, working with Google NotebookLM. You’ll find it in the app in some countries - it’s those two folks from NotebookLM, looking through your music list. You can share it with others. You can also enjoy your very own AI DJ, playing some of your biggest tunes.
Spotify’s press release also enclosed new numbers for video podcasts on the platform: it’s now over 300,000. In June, the number was 250,000.
By way of comparison, there are 125,268 video podcasts using open RSS, looking through the Podcast Index data. And 14 billion videos on YouTube.
APM has partnered with Magellan AI to provide real-time attribution and audience analytics to advertisers.

Spotify’s Chartable stops working on Dec 12 - if you’re using the Chartable prefix (chtbl.com or chrt.fm) in your RSS feed, your podcast may no longer be playable after that date. In research earlier this week, which we shared with affected podcast hosts, Podnews found 31,749 shows with the prefix still in it. Most podcast hosts are working to help customers.
Publishers using Spotify’s Megaphone will be unaffected.
It’s long been known that if podcasters change the enclosure URL, like removing the Chartable prefix, that triggers an automatic re-download on each listener’s Spotify app for every affected episode. Expect, therefore, significantly higher Spotify download numbers over the next few weeks as creators remove the Chartable prefix - and knock-on effects with ad serving.

Acast has opened its London studios, in the heart of London’s Old Street. The space includes an Amazon Music branded studio, free to emerging and brand-new creators; and has four multimedia studios. Acast podcasters can use the studios for free from early next year.
As Chartable prepares to close, Podgagement has launched a global charts and ranking service. The tool monitors nearly 34,000 charts across the world.

After a launch of Spotify’s video ambitions earlier in the month, industry observers are increasingly asking... why has Spotify’s Head of Podcast Monetization and Innovation so publicly decided not to back it? First spotted by Chris Petersen and again earlier this week by John McDermott, while you can watch this episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast in full video on YouTube, you can only listen to the same episode on Spotify. The Ringer isn’t posting video on Spotify for many of their shows, including ones specifically about video, like The Big Picture, The Rewatchables, The Watch, and The Prestige TV Podcast; and many sports shows - like The Ringer NBA show, which again posts full video on YouTube, but only audio on Spotify. Given Spotify has been shouting about video since June last year, we’re curious as to The Ringer’s reticence.
It’s been reported - and refuted - that Simmons will leave Spotify early next year.
The Spotify app has added a “recents” carousel, helping you remember what you’ve been listening to. Or watching.
Does adding (full) video to a show make any difference to the algorithm in Spotify and YouTube? We quietly made one of our “Podnews Daily” shows in full video earlier in the week, and uploaded the video version to both Spotify and YouTube. And here’s what happened:
We saw no difference in total plays at all on YouTube.
On Spotify, however, we did see an increase in total plays, and interestingly, the audio-only version the day after was also bigger than usual.
Worthwhile mentioning that YouTube and Spotify both account for less than 0.5% of our podcast plays - so we’re not talking big numbers. Anyone else want to give it a go?
