This time it’s from KWTX and McLennan County leadership: McLennan County proposes first property tax rate increase in years, citing public safety and rising costs.

For the 10,000th time: Talking about a “tax rate” for the coming year in comparison to a previous year’s “tax rate” is meaningless. The new rate only has meaning when compared to the No New Revenue Tax Rate, formerly the Effective Tax Rate. Learn more here. Learn a lot more here.

Texas has a new Comptroller of Public Accounts as Don Huffines took office on Saturday. Hopefully Huffines will put pressure on local governments to stop lying about tax rates in relation to tax increases or decreases.

In what reminds me of California a few decades ago, due to political pressure from afraid of growth and investment people, Governor Abbott has put up yet another hurdle in front of investment in Texas to build computing centers. It may just be reporting but it raises the cost of investing in Texas and does not fit the Texas Miracle model.

Austin could gain 40,000 aerospace and defense jobs in coming years. This is a very good story and is mostly focused on space focused industry.

Texas finds some registered voters wrongly flagged as noncitizens, reports the Texas Tribune as if this is some scandal. Of course that is the case. That’s how it works: Those that don’t match up get notified by their county and can then clear up the matter. Democrats complain that keeping voters rolls clean is somehow discriminatory but the only reason one would not keep such rolls clean and proper is if election cheating is the goal which, brings us back to why Democrats oppose cleaning the voter rolls.

Johnson County’s sheriff found himself back in jail today.

Now a court has ruled that the ballot language did not properly inform voters and, unless the ruling is changed on appeal, the adoption of Prop. 2 will be overturned. Our Lone Star story of the day: Here it comes again!, as I have predicted time and again for two decades. Midland ISD votes to sue the state over the public school finance system and justifies such with selfish half-truths and general ignorance of the fact that the courts have made clear what the outcome must be no matter how often the legislature reshuffles the deck chairs. No system reshuffle will change the equity of funding issue and, any that fixes the equity issue will mean less control for local districts and will still take from districts like Midland. You better be careful what you wish for. This is the fundamental problem with all socialist-style government programs: You must have a general equity and history shows that always means the lowest level of equity, not the top. For example, the state cannot build roads with smooth lanes for use by only people with cars registered in certain counties, the more property wealthy counties, and then require people registered in other counties to drive only on the other rough, pothole filled lanes.

Texas grants to Elon Musk’s Starlink face scrutiny – this is preposterous.
