Today’s Scripture:

 In those days John the Baptist came into the wilderness[a] of Judea proclaiming, 2 “Repent,[b] for the kingdom of heaven is near.” 3 For he is the one about whom the prophet Isaiah had spoken:[c]

“The voice[d] of one shouting in the wilderness,‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make[e] his paths straight.’”[f]

4 Now

John wore clothing made from camel’s hair with a leather belt around

his waist, and his diet consisted of locusts and wild honey.[g] 5 Then people from Jerusalem,[h] as well as all Judea and all the region around the Jordan, were going out to him, 6 and he was baptizing them[i] in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.

7 But when he saw many Pharisees[j] and Sadducees[k] coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Therefore produce fruit[l] that proves your[m] repentance, 9 and don’t think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’[n] For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones! 10 Even now the ax is laid at[o] the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 “I baptize you with water, for repentance, but the one coming after me is more powerful than I am—I am not worthy[p] to carry his sandals! He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.[q] 12 His winnowing fork[r] is in his hand, and he will clean out his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the storehouse,[s] but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire!”[t]

13 After they had gone, an[a] angel of the Lord[b]

appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his

mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod[c] is going to look for the child to kill him.” 14 Then he got up, took the child and his mother during[d] the night, and went to Egypt. 15 He stayed there until Herod[e] died. In this way what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet was fulfilled: “I called my Son out of Egypt.”[f]

16 When Herod[g] saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he became enraged. He sent men[h]

to kill all the children in Bethlehem and throughout the surrounding

region from the age of two and under, according to the time he had

learned from the wise men. 17 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:

18 “A voice was heard in Ramah,weeping and loud wailing,[i]Rachel weeping for her children,and she did not want to be comforted, because they were[j] gone.”[k]

The Return to Nazareth

19 After Herod[l] had died, an[m] angel of the Lord[n] appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 saying,

“Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel,

for those who were seeking the child’s life are dead.” 21 So[o] he got up and took the child and his mother and returned to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus[p] was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod,[q] he was afraid to go there. After being warned in a dream, he went to the regions of Galilee. 23 He came to a town called Nazareth[r] and lived there. Then what had been spoken by the prophets was fulfilled, that Jesus[s] would be called a Nazarene.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, in the time[a] of King Herod,[b] wise men[c] from the East came to Jerusalem 2 saying, “Where is the one who is born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose[d] and have come to worship him.” 3 When King Herod[e] heard this he was alarmed, and all Jerusalem[f] with him. 4 After assembling all the chief priests and experts in the law,[g] he asked them where the Christ[h] was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem of Judea,” they said, “for it is written this way by the prophet:

6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,are in no way least among the rulers of Judah,for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”[i]

7 Then Herod[j] privately summoned the wise men and determined from them when the star had appeared. 8 He[k]

sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and look carefully for the child.

When you find him, inform me so that I can go and worship him as well.” 9 After listening to the king they left, and once again[l] the star they saw when it rose[m] led them until it stopped above the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star they shouted joyfully.[n] 11 As they came into the house and saw the child with Mary his mother, they bowed down[o] and worshiped him. They opened their treasure boxes and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense,[p] and myrrh.[q] 12 After being warned in a dream not to return to Herod,[r] they went back by another route to their own country.

18 This

is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be

married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was

still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy

Spirit. 19 Joseph,

to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to

disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement[a] quietly.

20 As

he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.

“Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary

as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus,[b] for he will save his people from their sins.”

22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet:

23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child!    She will give birth to a son,and they will call him Immanuel,[c]    which means ‘God is with us.’”

24 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. 25 But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

those listed above include fourteen generations from Abraham to David,

fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile, and fourteen from the

Babylonian exile to the Messiah.

All the nations of the world will stand amazed    at what the Lord will do for you.They will be embarrassed    at their feeble power.They will cover their mouths in silent awe,    deaf to everything around them.17 Like snakes crawling from their holes,    they will come out to meet the Lord our God.They will fear him greatly,    trembling in terror at his presence.

18 Where is another God like you,    who pardons the guilt of the remnant,    overlooking the sins of his special people?You will not stay angry with your people forever,    because you delight in showing unfailing love.19 Once again you will have compassion on us.    You will trample our sins under your feet    and throw them into the depths of the ocean!20 You will show us your faithfulness and unfailing love    as you promised to our ancestors Abraham and Jacob long ago.

14 O Lord, protect your people with your shepherd’s staff;    lead your flock, your special possession.Though they live alone in a thicket    on the heights of Mount Carmel,[c]let them graze in the fertile pastures of Bashan and Gilead    as they did long ago.
