“80 Prozent aller Steuern und Abgaben in Österreich kommen aus Arbeit und Konsum, nur vier Prozent aus Vermögenswerten", kritisiert Marlene Engelhorn, eine der Erbinnen des BASF-Vermögens. Sie will dieser Ungleichverteilung etwas entgegensetzen und spendet 25 Millionen Euro aus ihrem Vermögen. Verteilt wird dieses Geld von einem unabhängigen Rat, der es NGOs und Thinktanks aus dem Bereichen Klimaschutz, Armutsbekämpfung und Bildung zugutekommen lässt. Zudem sieht sie den Staat in der Pflicht, stärker in die Umverteilung einzugreifen, damit die Schere zwischen Arm und Reich nicht noch weiter auseinanderklafft.

Bundeskanzler Karl Nehammer fordert ein „Aus vom Verbrenner-Aus“ und hat Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Politik erneut zum Auto-Gipfel geladen. Just eine Woche vor der EU-Wahl sagt der ÖVP-Chef damit dem im Vorjahr beschlossenen EU-weiten Verbot diesel- und benzinbetriebener Neuwagen ab 2035 den Kampf an. Denn es dürfe nicht sein, dass die EU "durch Verbote und Überregulierung beginnt, die Freiheit einzuschränken". Damit lehnt die Volkspartei - wie auch bereits die deutsche CDU - einen zentralen Teil des Green Deal der EU ab.
Vom grünen Koalitionspartner kommt dafür Unverständnis: “Die Volkspartei muss ihren Verbrenner-Fetisch überwinden und den Weg für klimafreundliche Mobilität frei machen“, sagt Lena Schilling, EU-Spitzenkandidatin der Grünen. Denn die Zukunft gehöre dem E-Auto.
Nach dem EU-Renaturierungsgesetz ist damit binnen weniger Tage gleich der zweite Koalitionsstreit im Umgang mit dem Klimawandel ausgebrochen. Während Umweltministerin Leonore Gewessler (Die Grünen) für die Wiederherstellung von natürlichen Lebensräumen eintritt, sieht Landwirtschaftsminister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP) durch die Renauturierung die Versorgungssicherheit mit heimischen Lebensmitteln gefährdet und spricht von einer “Überbürokratisierung”.
Soll der Ausstieg aus Benzin- und Dieselmotoren korrigiert werden? Überfordern Verbote im Dienst des Klimaschutzes Wirtschaft und Konsument:innen? Sind EU-Klimaschutzziele überhaupt zu erreichen? Die ÖVP ist gerade nicht gut auf ihren Koalitionspartner zu sprechen. Der Grund: Klimaschutzministerin Leonore Gewessler (Die Grünen) stimmte – gegen den Willen der ÖVP – dem EU-Renaturierungsgesetz zu und sicherte dem Umweltgesetz damit die knappe Mehrheit im EU-Rat. Bundeskanzler Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) reagierte prompt und zeigte seine Ministerkollegin nicht nur wegen Amtsmissbrauchs an, sondern will auch eine Nichtigkeitsklage beim Europäischen Gerichtshof (EuGH) einbringen. „Der Zweck heiligt nicht die Mittel: Leonore Gewessler stellt sich über die Verfassung, weil sie es mit ihrer grünen Ideologie nicht vereinbaren kann, gesetzeskonform zu handeln“, kritisiert auch ÖVP-Generalsekretär Christian Stocker.
Vizekanzler und Bundessprecher der Grünen, Werner Kogler, widerspricht und stellt sich hinter seine Ministerin. FPÖ-Bundesparteiobmann Herbert Kickl fordert indes die Entlassung von Gewessler sowie - einmal mehr - die “sofortige Beendigung dieser schlechtesten Bundesregierung aller Zeiten”.
War das Vorgehen von Leonore Gewessler im EU-Rat rechtskonform? Können ÖVP und Grüne noch zusammenarbeiten? Wie wirkt sich der Disput auf den Nationalratswahlkampf aus? Wie erwartet, rückt Europa nach der Wahl in 27-EU-Staaten nach rechts. In Deutschland und in Frankreich erzielten die AfD (15,6 Prozent) und die rechtsnationale Partei von Marine Le Pen (31,5 Prozent) Rekordergebnisse. Ebenso hoch gewann Italiens Premierministerin Giorgia Meloni mit rund 29 Prozent. Trotz dieser Zugewinne kann die bisherige EU-Kommissionpräsidentin Ursula von der Leyen auf eine zweite Amtszeit hoffen, denn auch ihr Mitte-Rechts-Bündnis EVP geht gestärkt aus der Wahl. Die großen Verlierer der Wahl sind die Grünen, weshalb zumindest in der europäischen Klima- und Agrarpolitik Veränderungen zu erwarten sind.
Auch in Österreich beschert die EU-Wahl der FPÖ einen historischen Wahlsieg. Erstmals erreicht die Partei von Bundesparteiobmann Herbert Kickl mit 25,5 Prozent den ersten Platz bei einer bundesweiten Wahl. Ein Ergebnis, das vor allem durch die hohen Verluste (minus 9,9 Prozentpunkte) der Kanzlerpartei ÖVP zustande gekommen ist. Der grüne Koalitionspartner wurde ebenfalls mit minus 3,2 Prozentpunkten von den Wähler:innen abgestraft.
Womit konnten die rechten Parteien überzeugen? Kommt es zu einer Verlangsamung beim Green Deal der EU? Welche Folgen hat das Ergebnis der EU-Wahl für den Krieg in der Ukraine? Die “Künstliche Intelligenz” ist derzeit in aller Munde. In Form von Bildbearbeitungsprogrammen, Routenplanung oder Hilfe bei der Hausübung verwenden sie viele von uns bereits täglich. Neben dem vielbesagten Nutzen, lauern aber auch zahlreiche Gefahren in der neuartigen Technologie. Bedenklich wird es vor allem dann, wenn die Algorithmen über jemanden entscheiden oder “Fakes”, also falsche Inhalte, vermittelt werden. Der Schauspielerin und Moderatorin Collien Ulmen-Fernandes ist so ergangen, Sie wurde Opfer von “gefakten” Bildern.
Einstellungsgespräche, Kreditvergabe, Überwachung des öffentlichen Raums, überall dort kann künstliche Intelligenz mitreden und entscheiden. Erstmals sind KI-Anwendungen in der EU nun auch gesetzlich geregelt worden. Der AI-Act soll künftig in der EU regeln, welche KI-Anwendungen erlaubt sind und welche nicht. Missbrauch soll verhindert und Innovation gefördert werden. KI-generierte Bilder und Videos (Deepfakes) etwa müssen gekennzeichnet werden. Menschen zu überwachen und zu bewerten (Social Scoring) - wie etwa aus China bekannt - ist verboten. Private Nutzerinnen können KI weiterhin anwenden. Reguliert werden sollen hingegen ArbeitgeberInnen, Unternehmer und Softwareentwickler.
Können wir so im internationalen Wettbewerb mithalten? Ist das genug Regulierung oder bräuchte es noch mehr? Und wie integrieren wir KI in unser Leben, ohne dass sie uns zerstört?

Beobachter:innen und politische Gegner:innen sprechen der früheren Klima-Aktivistin dabei die charakterliche Eignung für ein Amt im Europaparlament ab. Vizekanzler Werner Kogler und das grüne Regierungsteam orten indes eine gezielte Schmutzkübel-Kampagne von politischen Mitbewerber:innen und früheren Weggefährt:innen und stehen weiterhin hinter Schilling. Doch auch intern wächst die Kritik am Umgang mit der Causa, die die Klimapartei Wähler:innenstimmen kosten könnte.

Der Iran hat seine langjährige Drohung wahr gemacht und erstmals in seiner Geschichte seinen erklärten Erzfeind Israel direkt angegriffen. Mehr als 300 Raketen, Marschflugkörper und Drohnen sollen in der Nacht von Samstag auf Sonntag in Richtung Israel abgefeuert worden sein. Ein Angriff, der mit Unterstützung der USA, Großbritanniens und Jordaniens erfolgreich abgewehrt werden konnte.
Die Sorge vor einem Flächenbrand im Nahen Osten ist dennoch groß. UN-Generalsekretär António Guterres verurteilte den Beschuss und warnte vor einer weiteren Eskalation, etwa durch Vergeltungsmaßnahmen Israels: „Der Nahe Osten steht am Abgrund“, sagt Guterres bei der Sitzung des UNO-Sicherheitsrates am Sonntag.
Noch hat das israelische Kriegskabinett nicht über eine angemessene Reaktion entschieden. „Es ist an der Zeit, dass die Welt diesem Reich des Bösen in Teheran die Stirn bietet”, betont Israels Staatspräsident Jizchak Herzog zum US-Sender Sky News. Einen Krieg mit dem Iran wolle man aber nicht.
Welche Konsequenzen kann ein weiterer Gegenschlag Israels auf die Situation im Nahen Osten haben? War die internationale Politik gegenüber dem Mullah-Regime bisher zu nachsichtig? Und was bedeutet diese Situation für die Lage in Gaza? Der E-Mobilität gehört die Zukunft. Zumindest, wenn es nach der Europäischen Union geht, die die vorhandenen 8 Millionen Elektroautos in Europa bis 2030 auf 40 Millionen aufstocken will. Dazu soll neben einem flächendeckenden Ausbau der Ladeinfrastruktur auch das Zulassungsverbot von mit Diesel und Benzin betriebenen Fahrzeugen beitragen. Ziel ist, die enorme Umweltbelastung des Verkehrssektors durch CO2 einzubremsen und die eigenen Klimaziele zu erreichen.
In Österreich boomt der E-Mobilitätsmarkt, reine E-Autos haben 2023 im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 39 Prozent zugelegt. Dennoch ist der Antrieb weiterhin umstritten, Kritiker:innen bezweifeln sogar seine Klimafreundlichkeit. Bundeskanzler Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) macht sich im Gegenzug für das Fahren mit synthetischen Kraftstoffen, sogenannte E-Fuels, stark. Diese sind aber vergleichsweise teuer.
Ungeachtet dieser Debatte steigt die Dringlichkeit der Klimawende. Eine aktuelle Studie des Potsdam-Instituts für Klimafolgenforschung beziffert die Kosten für Klimaschäden bereits sechsmal höher als die Kosten für Klimaschutzmaßnahmen.
