  • Can You Imagine?

Is that which is most easily accessible, adorned most attractively, and serenades most sweetly also that which is the most encompassing, most factual, or most quality? Does that which history shows also provide the parameter of what is possible? Is imagination an avenue to discovery? Are there ways that we can imagine and discover the betterment of the entire world and its inhabitants?

  • Show Your Love!

What do new and different ideas require? What happens after the idea is there? What happens after the idea is a thing? What's necessary after that . . . to continue on . . . to be provided . . . to provide . . . to be of service . . . to serve . . to be helpful . . . to help? Progress Culture friends, Matt Hayes of Unmanned Propulsion Development (UPD) and Southern Maryland Loves You, and Tommy Luginbill, Director of TechPort, speak with Paul and Dominic about what new and different ideas need to develop and continue. Matt, Tommy, and Southern Maryland Loves You are on the brink of FDA approval for their PPE heat sanitization "Hot Box." The unit Matt designed is now the founding product for a new FDA category. We hear what they have needed along their journey as well as what they need now to help this idea continue on to be utilized as a successful method of virus sanitization and PPE cost and waste reduction.

  • Mastery Through Masters

To learn how something is done or achieved, we may find it helpful to look at the thing or things that are doing or achieving that something so as to better learn how the something does what it does and achieves what it achieves. We may find it helpful to observe and model after an example that has achieved. Study the masterworks, they say. I have to agree--and not only do I agree, I've been extremely fortunate to be in a situation to study and perform with masters. Today on Progress Culture, we get a chance to pick the brain of my mentor and master musician and drummer, Paul F. Murphy. Paul has achieved at the highest levels of art and music. He has been recognized by Oxford for developing a new sound in jazz and art and has a long history of friendships and working relationships with icons and trailblazers in art including Gene Krupa, Miles Davis, Rashied Ali, Salvador Dali, Jimmy Lyons, and Cecil Taylor. We get a chance to hear how to achieve mastery through a master who came from masters!

  • Mothers of Invention

Today on Progress Culture we take a look at creation, connection, devotion, failure, and success. Brain Jordan of Jordan R & D, and TechPort Intern, Tabitha Dunn, join Paul and I as we jump into the parallels of creativity and the creative "spark." We find ourselves asking, "what is the mother of invention," or rather the "Mothers of Invention?" This question takes us on a path that lands on how creativity taps us into the universal connection or consciousness and how necessary that actually is in our lives. Also, How important is devotion on the journey to do something different? How important is failure? It certainly would be a stroke of luck to find success without failure, and quite possibly a whole load of failure. But it seems pretty clear that we all agree that creativity and passion--your creativity, passion, and contribution to life IS IMPORTANT!

  • Art Saves the World!

Imagine you're seeing the headline, "Art Saves the World!" in the paper or on the TV. What is it that you think art would have done? What would have happened? Was it someone? Was it a painting? Was it beautiful? Does it need to be? What about the world? What did it need to be saved from?

  • Breaking It Down with the Greatest Generation

This week, Matt Hayes of UPD and Southern Maryland Loves You fame and notoriety takes us on a journey of topics and ideas. He is Progress Culture's second guest host and Paul, TechPort Director, Tommy Luginbill, and I are also on the scene. Matt leads off with a look at what we can learn about innovation from the "greatest generation," the generation who has set the stage for a lot of what is happening in the world today in regard to modern politics, science, and technology. It's pretty tricky to put a nice bow on this one. We get into a bunch of different stuff: the League of Nations, the UN, modern and face to face warfare, analog experiences being more conducive to creativity, the fundamentals of creativity, including a little bit of mystery in your life, and beyond!!

  • Good Vibrations

This week on the show we try a little different approach. We turn the reins over to actor, screenwriter, producer, and man of much interestingness, Kevin Schmidt. Kevin is the new Public Broadcast Manager for Calvert County and is in the process of making a documentary on Southern Maryland's response to COVID-19. It is in this capacity he functions as our host today. Though, in much the Progress Culture style we are carried to and through numerous thought threads. Paul F. Murphy, TechPort Director, Tommy Luginbill, and Dominic Fragman join Kevin as we jump into a variety of conversation topics for this week's episode of Progress Culture: Whats up with SIF? Whats up with TechPort? Whats up with Culture? Are there high growth areas on the horizon, especially in the innovation sector? How do we create space for people within them? How do we expand employment opportunities for people? Is the biggest innovation from this crisis in seeing leaders emerge from areas we don't expect with different ways of approaching problems? We also discuss important turning points in our own respective journeys: sobriety, intuition, mentorship, the value of understanding the structure of and how to communicate through stories and positivity.

  • Expanding Perception

If you had the opportunity to deliver the words that brought the universe into existence, how or what would you deliver? What if you "messed it up"? Would it still be good? This is the question that kicks off this week's episode with Dominic, Paul, and TechPort Director, Tommy Luginbill. They imagine interesting possibilities for Total Creation and improvisation and ponder several dimensions of creativity: when what you intend isn’t what happens … how practice prepares you for the unexpected … and how interacting with the unexpected with calmness and clarity helps you create … well, inspiring things. Beautiful food. A game of chess. Music. A universe. Trust and harmony.

  • Ask and Learn!

In today's episode of Progress Culture, Paul and Dominic sit down again with the facilitator of all the magic at TechPort--including Progress Culture!--Tommy Luginbill. Paul, Dominic, and Tommy explore the why for's of fashion, starting with a look at the suit jacket button job of Henry the 8th as an avenue to questioning general "supposed to's." Following the fashion talk, we hear from Luan Duong, Project Engineer at the University of Maryland's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Test Site. Lu speaks about where cutting edge drone technology is going, his thoughts on the power of music, as well as the lesson on innovation to be learned from . . . Sticky Notes.

  • What Are You Gonna Stand For?

Today we get a unique glimpse at What happens when a black woman points a mic at four white men and says, "Let's talk about race"? Dr. Sybol Anderson joins us to host a deep conversation on racial justice and equality. Sybol is a co-founder of the Spirit of Innovation & Freedom and the chief diversity officer at the College of Southern Maryland. She hosts me, Paul, Progress Culture friend and regular, TechPort Director, Tommy Luginbill, and Director of the University of Maryland Unmanned Aircraft Systems Test Site, Matt Scassero. During the discussion, Sybol directs our consideration to how we're feeling about the string of recent events and protests sparked by Police brutality against African Americans and the killing of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and numerous other persons of color. We explore the pain and the confusion as well what actions need to be taken to make progress away from these happenings and this treatment. What and how can we do something? How can we share love and direct  support not just today and tomorrow or once in a while, but every single day? What can be done about racial injustice? What are YOU gonna stand for?
