Mexican oil tanker ‘Ocean Mariner’ arrives in Cuba with 100,000 barrels of oil. The US ruling class is trying to cut off every supply of fuel to the island in the hopes of stirring up social unrest and bringing about societal collapse and a regime change. This ‘economic warfare’ is as brutal and genocidal as any aerial bombardment could be, necessarily hitting the poorest and most vulnerable the hardest.

And the USA’s political and economic crisis is likely to deepen further when it is seen how little of the longed-for change can be delivered from the White House. The re-election of Donald Trump as president is a sign of the growing anger of the US masses. It also reflects a widespread hope that the change they so desperately desire can be delivered by individuals and via the ballot box. As with the election of Barack Obama in 2008 and of Trump in 2016, those who voted for change are likely to be disappointed. Whether their new president has a genuine desire to fulfil any of his promises regarding ending wars, bringing back decent jobs etc is one thing. Whether he has the ability to fulfil any of them is another. The sooner the US proletariat stops pinning its hopes on bourgeois elections and starts to organise its own salvation, the better it will be for workers all over the world.

This is indeed a devastating setback for the long-suffering peoples of Syria and the wider region, but it is by no means the end of their liberation struggle. Despite having been essentially defeated some years ago, jihadi mercenaries backed by the USA and Turkey were left to regroup and rearm in the northwestern province of Idlib. This failure to complete their ejection from Syrian soil has had devastating consequences for the Syrian people, who have already endured so much since the onset of the west’s regime-change war in 2011.

Despite these shocking facts having been exposed 30 years ago, and involving every European Nato government, they remain largely unknown outside of Italy. Desperate to prevent the advance of communism, the Italian state after WW2 adopted a strategy of fuelling tension through violent provocations. These were part of a Europe-wide CIA-run operation which aimed to scare the public away from the communists and to manufacture a demand for tighter security measures by the state. The image above shows a 1964 military parade that was the pretext for stationing large numbers of troops in Rome, but a projected coup was aborted at the last minute.
