Words such as these ring more true for writers, especially ones like Sahitya Akademi Award 2022 winner Sukhjit. Hailing from Machhiwara, Sukhjit was that rare son of soil whose imagination touched great heights. Though not a prolific writer, whatever he wrote had merit and his short stories were no less than psychoanalysis of the society we are and he was a part of.
'Paatshah' is a beautiful story written by Sukhjit. The protagonist of the story who is an old man gives away all of his land and resources to a religious institution (Dera) which is not acceptable to his family.
The only son of the old man is not allowed to meet him when he decides to encounter his father who now lives in Dera. Things take their own turns and the story takes upon the journey where it exhibits various layers of the society we are living in.

Tribute to Khushwant Singh by Gulzar Singh Sandhu
Khushwant Singh (2 February 1915 – 20 March 2014) was born in Hadali, Khushab District, Panjab. He was one of the most well-renowned authors in Indian literary history, having received many awards and honors for his literary and journalistic contributions. Along with his prolific writing career, Khushwant Singh also served as a lawyer, diplomat, and politician.

Khushwant Singh was educated at Modern School, New Delhi, St. Stephen's College, Government College, Lahore, King’s College, and the Inner Temple in London. He practiced law at the Lahore High Court for several years before joining the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in 1947. He began a distinguished career as a journalist with All India Radio in 1951. From 1956 he turned to editorial services. He founded and edited Yojana, an Indian government journal in 1951–1953; The Illustrated Weekly of India, a newsweekly; The National Herald. He was also appointed as editor of Hindustan Times. During his tenure, The Illustrated Weekly became India's pre-eminent newsweekly, with its circulation raising from 65,000 to 400,000.
Khushwant Singh was also a member of the Rajya Sabha (upper house of the Indian Parliament) from 1980-1986. After receiving the Padma Bhushan award from the President of India in 1974, he returned it in 1984 in protest against the Indian Government’s siege of Sri Harimandar Sahib, Amritsar, “Operation Bluestar” (the Battle of Amritsar).

ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕਜ਼ਾਕ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ 15 ਜਨਵਰੀ 1943 ਨੂੰ ਸ. ਸਾਧੂ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਆਮ ਸਾਧਾਰਨ ਦਿਹਾਤੀ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ। ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਅੱਧ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਛੱਡਣੀ ਪਈ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੀ ਰਾਜਗਿਰੀ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਾਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੁਟ ਗਏ।
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਰੜੀ ਘਾਲਣਾ ਘਾਲੀ ਹੈ, ਬਲਕਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਹੱਡਭੰਨਵੀਂ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਦਸਵੀਂ ਜਮਾਤ ਪਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਘਾਲਣਾ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਦੇ ਅਹੁਦੇ ‘ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਣਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਾਮਿਸਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੈ।

ਅਧਿਆਪਕ, ਮੰਚ-ਕਲਾਕਾਰ ,ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਗਤੀਸ਼ੀਲ ਲੇਖਕਅਤੇ ਫਿਲਮ ਸਟਾਰ ਬਲਰਾਜ ਸਾਹਨੀ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਮਈ, 1913 ਈ. ਨੂੰ ਰਾਵਲਪਿੰਡੀ (ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ) ਵਿਖੇ ਹੋਇਆ। ਬਲਰਾਜ ਸਾਹਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ, ਉਰਦੂ, ਹਿੰਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਅਬੂਰ ਹਾਸਲ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਟੈਗੋਰ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਣ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਤਰਜੀਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਬਲਰਾਜ ਸਾਹਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਨਮ ਭੂਮੀ ਰਾਵਲਪਿੰਡੀ ਦੀ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਯਾਦ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਰਹੀ। ਵੰਡ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਰਾਵਲਪਿੰਡੀ ਦੀ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੇ।
ਹਿੰਦੂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਬਲਰਾਜ ਸਾਹਨੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਅਤ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੈਦਾਈ ਸਨ। ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਰੇ ਭਾਵੁਕ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਥਾਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹੋ, ਇਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਕੋਈ ਇਕੱਲੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਸਨ? ਇਹ ਸਾਡੇ ਵੀ ਸਨ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੈਗਾਮ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਾਨਵ ਜਾਤੀ ਲਈ ਹੈ।”ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਏ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਬਦਲੇ ਬਲਰਾਜ ਸਾਹਨੀ ਨੂੰ 1971 ਈ. ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵੱਲੋਂ ‘ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਤਕਾਰ’ ਵਜੋਂ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਜਵਾਦੀ ਸੋਚ, ਦੇਸ਼ ਪਿਆਰ, ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਤੇ ਫਿਲਮ ਜਗਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਬਦਲੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ 1969 ਈ. ਵਿੱਚ ‘ਪਦਮਸ਼੍ਰੀ’ ਦੀ ਉਪਾਧੀ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਵਿਭੂਸ਼ਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
