Couple weeks back I went into Hollywood to meet up with Alexa Curtis to be on her podcast This Is Life Unfiltered to talk about my story, where I grew up, college years, launching Purpose in the Youth and my advice for people who’re struggling to get started.

We had connected back in July of 2017 when the both of us were living in Boston and I had her on the show to talk about her story for Episode 43. Fun fact - she was THE first podcast I had ever visually recorded. Lighting was terrible, you could see my dresser in the frame but we for sure made it work. Just a reminder that we all gotta somewhere!

Earlier this week we released Episode 93 with Matt D’Avella, Creating + Building An Audience Is Difficult. He was the director of Minimalism: A Documentary About The Important Things and now is the host of The Ground Up Show podcast.

I had seen the documentary on Netflix in 2016 and it changed the way I saw the “things” in my life and made me realize having less was actually better. Not only did it clear up the clutter in my room because I had less “things” to worry about but I also felt I had clearer headspace - less shit to worry about and more time to focus on doing things I wanted to do. If you have Netflix and are looking for a new doc, I highly recommend checking it out!

Matt does a fantastic job with The Ground Up Show, a podcast that inspires creatives to make meaningful content & pursue their passion. He brings in a wide variety of guests such as musicians, athletes, creatives and even had Tyler Babin - creative for Gary Vaynerchuk who we had on for Episode 50.  The conversations are smooth, inspiring and have provided me with a ton of value from the handful that I have listened to so be sure to check that out as well.

Matt D’Avella is the host of The Ground Up Show podcast as well as the director behind Minimalism: A Documentary About The Important Things.

Raised in Lebanon Township, New Jersey he was the third of seven children. He found his passion for film early on and instead of sitting in the cafeteria in high school during lunch, he would spend any and all free time editing. At one point he and his brother Mark created a parody rap video Produce Paradise inside the grocery store they worked which landed them a 7 Million Dollar lawsuit. Fortunately for them they’ll got off the hook from paying and walked away with a check for $3,500.  

After graduating from Temple University, $117k in student loans, having just purchased a brand new car and living at home, he would go on to pay off all of his debt within four years strictly from freelancing and understanding how to be smart with his money.

With an email from Joshua Fields Millburn about an idea to create a documentary for The Minimalists, he was all on board. Passionate about the message, he spent the next three years putting together this project. With zero expectations of what would come of the final product, the documentary landed on Netflix.

Today his passion project is The Ground Up Show, a weekly podcast that inspires creatives to make shit happen. Over the past 66 plus episodes he’s talked with comedians, athletes, musicians and other creatives. If you asked him who his dream guest would be it’s simple - Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He even has a seperate website dedicated to getting him on the show.

In this episode he discusses why we should never have any expectations, anything is possible if you have the right intentions, why we must respect people's time, the importance of having a balanced lifestyle, you have to earn people’s respect and how creating and building an audience is difficult.

The best piece of advice I have to offer to any creatives is this. There is absolutely no wrong or right way to do anything! It's a game of trial & error, seeing what you like/dislike and adjusting along the way. There's no point in trying to follow the path of what other successful people have done because it won't work for us. This is our journey, create what you think is dope.

As soon as I realized this I became more confident in my work and stopped stressing about everything being "perfect" because it's not supposed to be! Whether you're podcasting, launching your own business or whatever, it's all a work in progress.

Be confident, get inspired by what others are creating and create what you think is DOPE!

Many have asked "Hey bearded guy, why'd you start a podcast in the first place?" so here ya go.

When I launched Purpose in the Youth in 2016 I didn't know one single person hosting one and now that's all I hear about. I highly suggest ANYONE with a passion start a podcast within that field. If you're an artist, start one talking to other artists. If you're an entrepreneur, start one talking to other entrepreneurs. You get the point?

The key is starting them for the right reasons. I launched Purpose in the Youth in pursuit of finding my passion/purpose and that's why I began interviewing other passionate people. Slowly but surely, I found my thing... being THE worlds favorite bearded man!

This is the behind the scenes of this week’s podcast for Episode 92 with Sabina Gadecki - It’s Always A Work In Progress. Two big reasons I was stoked about doing this podcast. Number 1 - Sabina is from my hometown, Chicopee, MA! We ended up going to the same middle school AND high school which is pretty crazy seeing as we both live in LA some 3,500+ miles away from home and secondly because she played a role in the Entourage movie, as E’s girlfriend Melanie which is hands down my favorite series of all time! Even with all the success she’s had in her career thus far she is still super grounded, passionate, friendly and has an energy to her that lights up a room.

She couldn’t recall who exactly said it but she came across a quote one time and it was like… have you ever notice when someone’s car is broken down on the side of the road, nobody stops to help them but if there is someone who is attempting to push their car, almost everyone jumps out to give the extra push. That’s exactly how this world works. People are willing to help those you’re willing to help themselves and if they’re still just sitting in that broken down car, complaining about life.. Nothing will ever change. Get out, work hard and push that damn car!

Sabina Gadecki is an actress and model who was featured in the movie Entourage and tv shows Law & Order, White Collar, House of Lies and The League. With her next film, The Ninth Passenger set to release in August and recently finishing up a shoot in Mexico for a Netflix series, she has been working towards this moment her entire life and the work is just beginning to stay consistent.

Born and raised in Chicopee, MA by two Polish parents, one of the best lessons she learned from them was to live life and appreciate the small moments along the way. In high school she kept it cool with everyone and was into both dance and cheerleading. She won Miss Western MA, Miss Polonia and Miss Polonia World by the age of 19 which showed her she could do the things she loved all the while helping others along the way.

While studying at Fordham University she jumped on an opportunity to be the host of the World Poker Tour (Season 5) and started building her career from there. She eventually signed to Ford Models and then to Wilhelmina upon moving to LA. No favors, no handouts just pure hard work, persistence and staying at it is what has gotten her to where she is today.

In this episode Sabina discusses it’s up to you to make things happen for yourself because if you don’t nobody cares, people want to help those who’re helping themselves, the best piece of advice she’d give to her younger self is to do what makes you happy, love will fall into your lap when you’re not looking for it, how creating a morning gratitude list has positively helped her and a reminder that no matter what your passion is, it’s always a work in progress.

Robbie Page is the Co-Founder of Tenzo Tea. While on the hunt for a coffee alternative that had health benefits, he and his best friend Steve O'Dell came across a clean, green, caffeine packed plant called Matcha. Realizing how much it helped them stay focused in their daily lives along with the other 20 or so health benefits, they launched Tenzo Tea with Matcha being the key ingredient. What started as solely an E-Commerce product in July of 2016 has evolved into over 160+ physical locations that continues to grow today.

Born and raised in the small town of Victor, New York, Robbie was surrounded by parents who both happen to be doctors along with a brother and sister. Realizing his passion for volleyball at a young age he committed his childhood to becoming the best athlete he could be despite the kids around him stereotyping him for being unathletic and goofy because of his height. By his junior year he was fully committed to UCLA as their #1 Volleyball recruit for the 2010 season standing 7 feet tall.

After finishing up school and playing professional Indoor Volleyball in the European circuit for an Italian team, he returned back to the U.S. and the lifestyle he was comfortable with in Southern California. Back in the professional beach leagues he would find himself playing volleyball during the day and working on Tenzo Tea by night to get it off the ground and running. What started as two of them in their apartment has evolved into a team of people based in Santa Monica, CA.

In this episode Robbie discusses how volleyball taught him if you work hard consistently at anything you’re bound to get better, you have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, the through of sorrow is about continuing to move forward regardless of how things are going, having an amazing team is key to growth, not reaching his full potential is what scares him the most and why feedback is the breakfast of champions.
