Voters in School City of Mishawaka's district will decide in May whether to keep current taxes in place to support the system. This is a renewal vote on a funding measure passed in 20-16, and will not increase anyone's current tax rate. The money has been used to fund technology upgrades, educational programs, and staff raises. A renewal would keep about 2.7 million dollars a year flowing for the next eight years. The vote comes in the May primary.

Sixteen new South Bend police officers were sworn in Wednesday, returning the department to full staffing for the first time since before the pandemic. The department is budgeted for 240 officers, with 247 now employed. But coming retirements this year and next will bring that number down. 51 new officers were hired last year.

The U-S State Department says a collision between a Russian fighter jet and a U-S drone over the Black Sea was likely accidental. A spokesman called the Russian pilot incompetent as he and a colleague shadowed the drone, which was gathering intelligence on Russia from over international waters. The drone is in deep water, and it's not clear if it can be recovered. The Russians say they will try.

NCAA Tournament scores from Wednesday: Fairleigh Dickinson over Texas Southern, 84-61, and Arizona State dominated Nevada, 98-73. The main draw begins first round play today, with a total of 16 games on tap at four sites across the country, followed by 16 more tomorrow. Purdue, Indiana, and Michigan State all play tomorrow.

The Chicago Bears have signed former Panthers quarterback PJ Walker, who will be added to the depth chart behind starter Justin Fields. The Indianapolis Colts have resigned receiver Ashton Dulin and defensive tackle Taven Bryan.

Spring officially arrives Monday, and with it, construction season, starting off with a bang. Work is expected to begin next week on the next phase of the Douglas Road improvement east of Ironwood. When the work starts, Douglas will be completely shut down between Ironwood and Carmichael, including over Juday Creek for the spring summer, and into the fall, as they widen the road and put in a new bridge over the creek. The closure could begin as soon as Monday.

Michigan's legislature has repealed the state's Right to Work law and reinstated prevailing wage requirements for state construction projects. The legislation is expected to be signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in the coming days, after Democrats took over control of the legislature in last year's elections. The repealed laws were passed during former Republican Governor Rick Snyder's time in office.

The state of Ohio is suing Norfolk Southern Railroad over the derailment and toxic chemical spill in East Palestine near the Pennsylvania border. The Attorney General in Ohio says the state wants to ensure the railroad covers all the costs of the cleanup and remediation at and near the site. The lawsuit claims the crash was avoidable, and Norfolk Southern accidents have increased 80 percent over the last decade.

The NCAA College Basketball Tournament opened last night, with Texas A&M Corpus Christi downing Southeast Missouri 75-71, and Pitt edging Mississippi State 60-to-59. Two more play-in games tonight, and the main draw starts play Thursday.

Michigan won its NIT opener at home against Toledo, 90-to-80. The Wolverines face Vanderbilt this Saturday. 

Hockey: the Blackhawks downed the Boston Bruins in Chicago, 6-to-2. The Detroit Redwings lost at Nashville, 2-to-1.

Consultants working with South Bend Schools on the future of school buildings say they will not recommend going to two high schools from the current four. But one of the four could still need to close as enrollment continues to decline. The South Bend Council is pushing the district to leave all three inside the city limits open, which could leave Clay High School as the one to close. Parents and others in that part of the district are lobbying to keep their school. Decisions are due this spring, and could take effect this fall.

President Biden Monday said again that depositors in two banks that failed in the last few days can now get all of their money. Specialty banks in Silicon Valley and New York City are closed after too many depositors at once tried to withdraw their funds. Biden says federal insurance will cover everyone, taxpayers will not be on the hook, and management and shareholders at the banks will take the hit.

As we deal with some lake effect snow today in Michiana, the first big nor'easter of the year is shaping up in New England. Heavy rain and snow plus wind gusts as high as 50 miles per hour could affect the I-95 corridor from New York City to Boston, and drop a lot more snow in the New England moutains.

A lot of us will be a little groggy this morning as we need a few days to adjust to the time change over the weekend. Clocks moved forward an hour Sunday morning for Daylight Time, and that means your body clocks thinks it's 5am when it's really six. A little patience and understanding will go a long way the next few days as we all adjust.

A bank collapse in California's Silicon Valley last week is the biggest since the housing recession 15 years ago, and the Federal Reserve and Treasury Department are taking steps to make sure it doesn't spread. They announced Sunday that all deposits, even the uninsured ones, will be covered, as another bank in New York was closed by regulators on Sunday.

At the Oscars last night, the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once won a lot of the major awards, including best picture, best directing, best actress for Michelle Yeoh, and best supporting actor and actress. Best Actor went to Brendan Fraser in The Whale.

Sports: the Purdue Boilermakers are the top seed in their region of the NCAA Tournament after the bracket was revealed Sunday evening. The Indiana Hoosiers are a four seed, and Michigan State is a seven seed. All three play their opening games Friday.

The Notre Dame women will host first and second round NCAA games at Purcell Pavilion, as the three seed in their region. The Indiana Hoosier women are a one seed, hosting first and second round games in Bloomington.

Hockey: the Detroit Redwings won at home, 5-to-3 over the Boston Bruins. The Bruins will be in Chicago to play the Blackhawks tomorrow night.

Roads will be snowy and slushy this morning with snowfall tapering off toward noon today. The morning commute will be slower than usual today with several inches of heavy wet snow on the ground. Allow some extra time to get where you need to go this morning.

President Biden laid out his budget plan to union workers in Philadelphia Thursday. He says his proposed Medicare price negotiations will save 160 billion dollars. The budget also includes a new billionaire tax, an increase in the tax for corporate stock buybacks, and an increase in the Medicare tax for those making more than $400,000 a year. Republicans in Congress say this budge is dead on arrival.

College basketball tournament week saw the top four seeds in the ACC Tournament through to tonight's semifinals. Miami faces Duke, and Virginia takes on Clemson tonight.

In the Big Ten, Michigan was eliminated by Rutgers Thursday, 62-to-50. Today's quarterfinals have Purdue against Rutgers, Michigan State facing Ohio State, Penn State against Northwestern, and Indiana facing Maryland.

High school regional action tomorrow includes Penn against Chesterton, and Mishawaka facing Hammond Central in Michigan City. Wins by Penn and Mishawaka would pit them against each other for the regional title. Hear those games tomorrow starting at 1:30 on 96-1 the Ton.

NBA: The Pacers downed Houston 134-125 in Indy. The Detroit Pistons lost at home to Charlotte, 113-103.

In hockey, the Chicago Blackhawks play at Florida tonight. The puck drops at 7:00pm.
