The American Dream for many became the American Nightmare. Growing up many of us searched for that Norman Rockwell moment. For many of us it never happened. And for all too many, they were never even depicted in that Norman Rockwell image. The 1950’s are romanticized as a time when one paycheck paid for the house, family and white picket fence. What is left out of the equation is the formula only worked if you were a white straight male. Marginalized people stayed hidden or under the radar. Things started to change in the 1960’s. Culminating in 1969, a year of change.

Tony gives a brief summary of being part of the RaceAware movement.
For the larger part of our history,“the American Dream” was to start a small local business, something like a bakery, grocery store, cleaners, clothing store/tailors, hotel, restaurant, hardware store, theater, gift store, travel agency, etc., and then not only run it for the rest of your life but make it profitable, create well paying local employment and be able to pass it along to your children and grandchildren. What happened to this American formula?

Gaslighting is usually thought of at the personal level—where one person forces another to question their reality. It is an effective technique to place the gaslighter in a position of power. Exactly the same thing takes place at a cultural level.
