Newly-elected Tshwane metro executive mayor Solly Msimanga says EFF and ANC members are recruiting people to occupy vacant land in the municipality. This comes as people have occupied RDP houses in Nelmapius, near Mamelodi, and others are occupying vacant land near Ga-Rankuwa in the north. People occupying the pieces of land say they do so because they have nowhere to live. Meanwhile, another group in Ga-Rankuwa is taking city of Tshwane to court after they were removed from the land they illegally occupied. Sihle Nkhoma reports

More than 200 temporary teachers in Limpopo have not received their salaries since April. The South African Democratic Teachers Union has since threatened to go on strike, should the provincial Department of Education fail to pay the teachers by today (tuesday 23 August). The department says the teachers have not been paid because of an anomaly experienced by the Treasury Department. Shibu Mamokgere reports..

US Secretary of State John Kerry has warned that America may cut aid to South Sudan if fighting in the country does not stop. Kerry announced a $138-million dollar aid package to South Sudan, but said in future financial help to the world's youngest nation would be tied to the leaders' commitment to peace. The United States is currently the world's largest donor to South Sudan contributing $1.6Billion in aid to the country. Speaking in Nairobi, Kerry said South Sudan has agreed to the deployment of a regional protection force to boost security in the troubled nation. Sarah Kimani reports.

The Kwa-Zulu Natal Education Department has confirmed that one of the victims of a teacher in Nquthu tried to commit suicide at the weekend. The teacher is on the run after a series of videos surfaced of him allegedly committing sexual acts with a number of learners from the Ekucabangeni High School. The teacher allegedly manipulated learners over several years, influencing them into having sexual relations with him. WThe ANC in Johannesburg is uncertain that it will be able to retain the metro municipality ahead of the inaugural council meeting on Monday morning. It obtained 44% and needs the support of other smaller political parties or risk losing Johannesburg to the opposition. The ANC has blamed national issues such as the Nkandla saga and e-tolls for its reduced electoral support in the August 3rd municipal elections. The ANC Youth League has called for the ruling party to bring forward its national conference to elect new leadership. The call follows the results of the local government elections. The Youth League spokesperson, Mlondli Mkhize, says a national conference is due in December 2017. However, if it could be brought forward by at least six months it would give the party time to recover before the 2019 elections. The DA's Johannesburg mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba says he's willing to stand down if the party asks him to. He was reacting to the EFF leader Julius Malema's statement in which he expressed reservations about Mashaba's candidature. Malema has undertaken to support the DA mayoral candidate in the Tshwane Metro, Solly Msimanga. Mashaba says he finds the conditions that Malema has set strange and awkward.
