Although parts of South Africa have received some rain this summer, farmers say it is not enough to break the current drought the country is experiencing. Already the government has declared five provinces disaster areas for agriculture. To assess the outlook for the agricultural sector, in particular maize, which is a staple food for many people, Sakina Kamwendo spoke to the Chief Executive Officer of Grain-SA, Jannie de Villiers.

The Supreme Court of Appeal has ruled that the 5 billion rand Eskom tender awarded to French nuclear company Areva NP Incorporated is unlawful and procedurally unfair citing irregular administration. The so called "never ending tender" involves a controversial R5-billion refurbishment of steam generators at Koeberg nuclear power plant. Areva won the contract last year despite strong recommendations by Eskom's technical and executive teams being in favour of Japanese-American company Westinghouse. President Jacob Zuma has replace Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene with former Merafong Mayor David Van Rooyen without giving any reason. The president thanked Nene for his commitment on his job during difficult economic times in the country.

Economists and market analysts have expressed shock at the replacement of finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene with a lesser known Douglas Des Van Rooyen. The announcement saw the rand weaken further to touch 15 rand to the US dollar briefly.
